  • Theoretical mechanics analysis and finite element simulation were performed to investigate creep deformation behavior at the crack tip of transversely isotropic materials under small scale creep (SCC) conditions. Mechanical behavior of material was assumed as an elastic-$2^{nd}$ creep, which elastic modulus ( E ), Poisson's ratio ( ${\nu}$ ) and creep stress exponent ( n ) were isotropic and creep coefficient was only transversely isotropic. Based on the mechanics analysis for material behavior, a constitutive equation for transversely isotropic creep behavior was formulated and an equivalent creep coefficient was proposed under plain strain conditions. Creep deformation behavior at the crack tip was investigated through the finite element analysis. The results of the finite element analysis showed that creep deformation in transversely isotropic materials is dominant at the rear of the crack-tip. This result was more obvious when a load was applied to principal axis of anisotropy. Based on the results of the mechanics analysis and the finite element simulation, a corrected estimation scheme of the creep zone size was proposed in order to evaluate the creep deformation behavior at the crack tip of transversely isotropic creeping materials.

  • A micro-impression creep machine was designed and developed, adopting a small punch in diameter of 150 um, displacement gage with an accuracy of sub-${\mu}m$ scale, and load-cell with an accuracy of mN scale in order to investigate creep behavior of small solder ball in diameter of less than 1 mm. Creep behavior of lead-free solder ball(Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu) in diameter of $760\;{\mu}m$ was investigated in the stress range of $8{\sim}60\;MPa$ and at $303\;K{\sim}393\;K$. The applied load became decreased slightly and continuously in the creep rate of $10^{-4}/s$ range during the current experiments. Also, the machine frame was so sensitive to the environmental temperature that nm scaled displacement recording was unstable according to the change in environmental temperature.

  • At early stage of creep-fatigue crack growth tests, initial transient behavior which implies high crack growth rate has been generally observed by some researchers. Since the influence of the initial transient crack growth behavior on the remaining life of components is significant, cause of it should be further studied. In this study, characteristics of the initial transient behavior of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel is studied experimentally by performing creep-fatigue crack growth tests at $538^{\circ}C$ in air under trapezoidal waveshapes. It is verified that the cause of the initial transient behavior is not high ${(C_t)}_{avg}$ values due to the small scale creep condition at the early stage of test, but oxidation-dominated crack growth mechanism during the transient period which is different from the creep-dominated crack growth mechanism in steady crack growth period.

  • The higher-order asymptotic C(t) - $A_2(t)$ approach was employed to investigate the crack-tip stress of two collinear cracks in a power-law creeping material under the plane strain conditions. A comprehensive calculation was made of the single crack, collinear crack model with S/a = 0.4 and 0.8, by using the C(t) - $A_2(t)$ approach, HRR-type field and the finite element analysis; the latter two methods were used to check the constraint significance and the calculation accuracy of the C(t) - $A_2(t)$ approach, respectively. With increasing the creep time, the constraint $A_2$ was exponentially increased in the small-scale creep stage, while no discernible dependency of the constraint $A_2$ on the creep time was found at the extensive creep state. In addition, the creep time and the mechanical loads have no distinct influence on accuracy of the results obtained from the higher-order asymptotic C(t) - $A_2(t)$ approach. In comparison with the HRR-type field, the higher-order asymptotic C(t) - $A_2(t)$ solution matches well with the finite element results for the collinear crack model.

  • Creep phenomenon at the scale of bone tissue (small specimens) is known to be present and demonstrated for low strains. Here creep is demonstrated on a pair of fresh-frozen human femurs at the organ level at high strains. Under a constant displacement applied on femur's head, surface strains at the upper neck location increase with time until fracture, that occurs within 7-13 seconds. The monotonic increase in strains provides evidence on damage accumulation in the interior (probably damage to the trabeculae) prior to final fracture, a fact that hints on probable damage of the trabecular bone that occurs prior to the catastrophic fracture of the cortical surface layer.

  • This paper presents characteristics analysis of persistent current switch(PCS) system on a small scale by using YBCO coated conductor(CC). A high temperature superconductor(HTS) PCS system mainly consists of a PCS, a HTS magnet load and a magnet power supply(MPS). To design the optimal heater triggering switch. the three-dimensional heat conduction model was analyzed by finite element method(FEM). The electrical equivalent model considering the n-value of CC was applied to analyze current decay during persistent current mode. In the experiment and simulation, the heater was applied with a current of 0.43A and the current was ramped up to 10A and 20A with 0.2A/s. Finally, experimental results of the HTS PCS system have been compared with the theoretical results. It has been concluded that flux creep can not influence the results because the operating current was 40% of critical current and optimal sequential operation of the PCS system is indispensable to enhance its performance.

  • This paper presents results from experimental analysis of a friction-driven wheel responsible for generating wheel squeal noise. Squeal noise generating mechanism has been examined under the laboratory condition by the model rig on a small scale. Creep characteristics and squeal noise were observed by changing the possible variables, such as relative velocities and friction coefficients in time- and frequency-domain.
