  • The higher energy efficiency for ship and the lower pollution for global environment are required strictly. However the performance of marine diesel engine is gradually deteriorated with time. And also the operation condition is varied with sea conditions. Hence the optimization for operating condition of marine engines is needed for energy saving and environment kindly. In this paper, it was attempted to investigate the influence of aging for marine diesel engine. The deterioration of engine performance is assessed by the calculation results of the simulation program for two-stroke marine diesel engine developed by author which was reported before. And three parameters for deterioration of engine performance were considered such as lower efficiency of turbocharger by fouling, increase of blow-by gas due to wear of cylinder liner and getting worse of combustion by poor injection. By the results, it was shown that the influence of engine performance by aging was relatively not so small - 10.4 bar low in Pmax and 3.2% decrease in Pmi.

  • In the field of marine transportation the energy saving is one of the most important factors for profit. In order to reduce the fuel oil consumption the ship's propulsion efficiency must be increased as much as possible. The propulsion efficiency depends upon a combination of an engine and a propeller. The propeller has better efficiency as lower rotational speed. This situation led the engine manufacturers to design the engine that has lower speed, longer stroke and a small number of cylinders. Consequently the variation of rotational torque became larger than before because of the longer delay-time in the fuel oil injection process and an increased output per cylinder. As this new trends the conventional mechanical-hydrualic governors for engine speed control have been replaced by digital speed controllers which adopted the PID control or the optimal control algorithm. But these control algorithms have not enough robustness to suppress the variation of the delay-time and the parameter pertubation. In this paper we consider the delay-time and the perturbation of engine parameters as the modeling uncetainties. Next we design the controller which has zero offset in steady state engine speed, based on the two-degree-of-freedom control theory and $\mu$-synthesis. Thd validity of the controller is investigated through the response simulation. We use a personal computer and an analog computer as the digital controller and the engine (plant) part respectively. And, we certify that the designed controller maintains its performance even though the engine parameters may vary.

  • Limited and nonlimited emissions of scooters were analysed during several annual research programs of the Swiss Agency of Environment Forests and Landscape(SAEFL, BUWAL). Small scooters, which are very much used in the congested centers of several cities are a remarkable source of air pollution. Therefore every effort to reduce the emissions is an important contribution to improve the air quality in urban centers. In the present work detailed investigations of particle emissions of different 2-stroke scooters with direct injection and with carburetor were performed. The nanoparticulate emissions with different lube oils and fuels were measured by means of SMPS, (CPC) and NanoMet. Also the particle mass emission(PM) was measured with the same method as for Diesel engines. It can be stated, that the oil and fuel quality have a considerable influence on the particle emissions, which are mainly oil condensates. The engine technology influences the (nano)particle emissions by: mixture preparation, mixture tuning, oil consumption, postoxidation, quality, condition and temperature of the catalyst. Since the particulate emission of the 2-S consists mainly of lube oil condensates the minimization of oil consumption stays always an important goal.

  • In recently designed diesel engines, the running conditions for piston pin bearings have become very severe due to combustion pressure and temperature increase. In this paper, it will be investigated the tendency of piston pin rotating motion by calculating the friction coefficient at piston pin bearings, the oil film thickness and the frictional torques induced by hydrodynamic shear stress. Finally, the pressure distributions on the oil film of piston pin bearings will be found by two-dimensional lubrication analysis in order to help the optimum design of the bearings of piston pin. Specially, it is investigated how the changes in combustion pressure at exhaust and intake stroke and the pressure-viscosity index effect on the film pressure distribution.

  • Many researches on green ship with increasing on economics, efficiency and convenience have been carried out consistently. One of them is development of diesel engines with electronic control. While small duty one for automobiles had been adopted mainly already, disseminating heavy duty one for ships has trouble due to safety and reliability. In order to solve these problem in this study, performance of electronic control and cam type engine installed in parallel on training ship HANBADA of korea maritime university was analyzed and compared. It is certain that specific fuel oil consumption of the electronic control type is lower than cam type and excellent at lower engine load, especially. And the electronic control type shows more effective characteristic at sea trial on specific fuel oil consumption.
