We numerically analyzed the nonlinear shoaling, a plunging breaker and its accompanying energetic suspension of sediment at a bed, and a redistribution of suspended sediments by a down rush of preceding waves and the following plunger using SPH with a Gaussian kernel function, Lagrangian Dynamic Smagorinsky model (LDS), Van Rijn's pick up function. In that process, we came to the conclusion that the conventional model for the tractive force at a bottom like a quadratic law can not accurately describe the rapidly accelerating flow over a swash zone, and propose new methodology to accurately estimate the bottom tractive force. Using newly proposed wave model in this study, we can successfully duplicate severely deformed water surface profile, free falling water particles, a queuing splash after the landing of water particles on the free surface and a wave finger due to the structured vortex on a rear side of wave crest (Narayanaswamy and Dalrymple, 2002), a circulation of suspended sediments over a swash zone, net transfer of sediments clouds suspended over a swash zone toward the offshore, which so far have been regarded very difficult features to mimic in the computational fluid mechanics.
The turbulent flow and vortex shedding phenomena around pantograph panhead of high speed train were investigated and compared with available experimental data and other simulations. The pantograph head was simplified to be a square-cross-section pillar and assumed to be no interference with other bodies. The Reynolds number (Re) was 22,000. The LES(large eddy simulation) of FDS code was applied to solve the momentum equations and the Wener-Wengle wall model was employed to solve the near wall turbulent flow. Smagorinsky model($C_s$=0.2) was used as SGS(subgrid scale) model. The total grid numbers were about 9 millions and the analyzed domain was divided into 12 multi blocks which were communicated with each other by MPI. The time-averaged mainstream flows were calculated and well compared with experimental data. The phased-averaged quantities had also a good agreement with experimental data. The near-wall turbulence should be carefully treated by wall function or direct resolution to get successful application of LES methods.
In this paper, a stabilized large eddy simulation technique is developed to predict turbulent flow with high Reynolds number. Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) stabilized method and three-step technique are both implemented for the finite element formulation of Smagorinsky sub-grid scale (SGS) model. Temporal discretization is performed using three-step technique with viscous term treated implicitly. And the pressure is computed from Poisson equation derived from the incompressible condition. Then two numerical examples of turbulent flow with high Reynolds number are discussed. One is lid driven flow at Re = $10^5$ in a triangular cavity, the other is turbulent flow past a square cylinder at Re = 22000. Results show that the present technique can effectively suppress the instabilities of turbulent flow caused by traditional FEM and well predict the unsteady flow even with coarse mesh.

A parallelized FEM code based on domain decomposition method has been recently developed for large-scale computational fluid dynamics. A 4-step splitting finite element algorithm is adopted for unsteady flow computation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation, and Smagorinsky LES model is chosen for turbulent flow computation. Both METIS and MPI Libraries are used for domain partitioning and data communication between processors, respectively. Tiburon model of Hyundai Motor Company is chosen as the computational model at Re=7.5 $\times$ 10$^{5}$ , which is based on the car height. The calculation is carried out under both the wind tunnel condition and the road condition using IBM SP parallel architecture at KISTI Super Computing Center. Compared with the existing experimental data, both the velocity and pressure fields are predicted reasonably well and the drag coefficient is in good agreement. Furthermore, it is confirmed that the drag under the road condition is smaller than that under the wind-tunnel condition.

The present study investigates the performance of dynamic mixed model (DMM; Zang et ai.) in a channel with strong wall injection through a Large eddy simulation (LES) technique. The DMM results are compared with those of DNS and the results obtained with popular dynamic Smagorinsky model (DSM). Better agreement is achieved when using the DMM with box filter than DSM and coarse DNS in predicting the first and second order statistics as well as large-scale structures of velocity and temperature fields. Such favorable features of DMM are attributed to the fact that it explicitly calculates the modified Leonard stress term and only models the remaining cross and the SGS Reynolds stress terms and, thus, it reduces the excessive burden put on the model coefficient of DSM. Also it is demonstrated that the DMM can be successfully extended to the prediction of temperature (passive scalar) field where strong streamwise inhomogeneity exists.

Even though the relative importance of length scale of flow system allow us to simplify three dimensional flow problem to one or two dimensional representation, many systems still require three dimensional analysis. The objective of this study is to develop an efficient and accurate finite element model for analyzing and predicting three dimensional flow features in natural rivers and to offend to model spreading of pollutants and transport of sediments in the future. Firstly, three dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the hydrostatic pressure assumption in generalized curvilinear coordinates were combined with the kinematic free-surface condition. Secondly. to simulate realistic high Reynolds number flow, the model employed the Streamline Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin(SU/PG) scheme as a weighting function for the finite element method in conjunction with an appropriate turbulence model(Smagorinsky scheme for the horizontal plain and Mellor-Yamada scheme for the vertical direction). Several tests is performed for the purpose of validation and verification of the developed model. A simple rectangular channel, 5-shaped and U-shaped channel are used for tests and comparisons are made with RMA-10 model. Runs for each case is converged stably without a oscillation and calculated water-surface deformation, longitudinal and transversal velocities, and velocity vector fields are in good agreement with the results of RMA-10 model.

This paper describes the effect of different testing parameters (configuration of infrastructure and truck position on road) on truck aerodynamic coefficients under cross wind conditions, by means of a numerical approach known as Large Eddy Simulation (LES). In order to estimate the air flow behaviour around both the infrastructure and the truck, the filtered continuity and momentum equations along with the Smagorinsky-Lilly model were solved. A solution for these non-linear equations was approached through the finite volume method (FVM) and using temporal and spatial discretization schemes. As for the results, the aerodynamic coefficients acting on the truck model exhibited nearly constant values regardless of the Reynolds number. The flat ground is the infrastructure where the rollover coefficient acting on the truck model showed lowest values under cross wind conditions (yaw angle of $90^{\circ}$), while the worst infrastructure studied for vehicle stability was an embankment with downward-slope on the leeward side. The position of the truck on the road and the value of embankment slope angle that minimizes the rollover coefficient were determined by successfully applying the Response Surface Methodology.
This paper investigates the characteristics of turbulence schemes. Turbulence closures are fundamental for modeling the atmospheric diffusion, transport and dispersion in the boundary layer. In particular, in non-homogeneous conditions, a proper description of turbulent transport in planetary boundary layer is fundamental aspect. This study is based on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) and combines four different turbulence schemes to assess if the different schemes have a impact on simulation results of vertical profiles. Two of these schemes are Isotropc Deformation scheme (I.Def) and Anisotropic deformation scheme (A.Def) that are simple local scheme based on Smagorinsky scheme. The other two are Mellor-Yamada scheme (MY2.5) and Deardorff TKE scheme (D.TKE) that are more complex non-local schemes that include a prognostic equation for turbulence kinetic energy. The simulated potential temperature, wind speed and mixing ratio are compared against radiosonde observations from the study region. MY2.5 shows consistently reasonable vertical profile and closet to observation. D.TKE shows good results under relatively strong synoptic condition especially, mixing ratio simulation. Validation results show that all schemes consistently underestimated wind speed and mixing ratio but, potential temperature was somewhat overestimated.

A large eddy simulation(LES) is performed for turbulent flow around a bluff body inside a sudden expansion cylinder chamber, a configuration which resembles a premixed gas turbine combustor. To promote turbulent mixing and to accommodate flame stability, a flame holder is installed inside the combustion chamber. The Smagorinsky model is employed and the calculated Reynolds number is 5,000 based on the bulk velocity and the diameter of the inlet pipe. The simulation code is constructed by using a general coordinate system based on the physical contravariant velocity components. The predicted turbulent statistics are evaluated by comparing them with the laser-doppler velocimetry (LDV) measurement data. The agreement of LES with the experimental data is shown to be satisfactory. Emphasis is placed on the time-dependent evolutions of turbulent vortical structure behind the flame holder. The numerical flow visualizations depict the behavior of large-scale vortices. The turbulent mixing process behind the flame holder is analyzed by visualizing the sectional views of vortical structure.
Parallel finite element code has been recently developed for the analysis of the incompressible Wavier-Stokes equations using domain decomposition method. Metis and MPI libraries are used for the domain partitioning of an unstructured mesh and the data communication between sub-domains, respectively. For unsteady computation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, 4-step splitting method is combined with P1P1 finite element formulation. Smagorinsky and dynamic model are implemented for the simulation of turbulent flows. For the validation performance-estimation of the developed parallel code, three-dimensional Laplace equation has been solved. It has been found that the speed-up of 40 has been obtained from the present parallel code fir the bench mark problem. Lastly, the turbulent flows around the MIRA model and Tiburon model have been solved using 32 processors on IBM SMP cluster and unstructured mesh. The computed drag coefficient agrees better with the existing experiment as the mesh resolution of the region increases, where the variation of pressure is severe.
