  • In the past decade soft clay shield tunneling technology have been improved to permit continuous support to the face of a tunnel. These advanced shield can be operated such that an initial heaving is created, this helps to decrease the inward soil movement into the tail void. In this paper, the measurement of slurry shield and EPB shield were used and two dimensional elasto-plastic programs EPSHILD developed for shield tunnel analysis were approved. The excavation steps corresponding with construction stages were settled and heaving load, load factors were considered. This study is based on the instantaneous settlement which is occured in the process of shield construction but not the secondary settlement by consolidation.

  • Tn this study, model soil deposits are prepared in large test chambers to minimize the scale effects. Also, slurry of mixture containing 50 percent kaolin clay and 50 percent silica has been consolidated to simulate the process of natural soil deposit formation and to reduce the consolidation time. To provide a more detailed description of varying soil properties along the soil profile of model clay deposits and to compare the in-situ test results with those from prototype tests, miniature in-situ tests, including vane shear, piezoprobe, and cone penetration tests were conducted in each of the clay deposits. The current results indicate that consistent soil deposits were prepared for the current and previous test programs. Also, reasonable predicting methods of prototype behavior based on model in-situ test results were suggested in this study by examining differences between the test results from both the model and prototype tests.

  • This study was conducted to find out the characteristics of the expanded road embankment constructed by the lightweight air-mixed soil (slurry density $10kN/m^3$) for a short-term without any ground improvement. Compression strength, capillary rise height of the lightweight air-mixed soil and settlement behavior of soft ground were studied. Compression strengths of the specimens sampled at the site after 1 and 5 months of construction were all satisfied the required strength 500 kPa. However, it was not convinced the homogeneity construction, because the values of strength were depending on the sampled location. Also, strength difference between laboratory and site specimens were found about 19%, and thus it should be considered for mixing design. Capillary rise reached about 20 cm for 70 hours because of a numerous tiny pores existed inside the lightweight air-mixed soil. Relationship between settlement and time of the soft ground placed underneath the expanded embankment was estimated by using the measured data and back analysis technique. The current average consolidation ratio and the final settlement after 120 months later were estimated about 32% and 4.5cm, respectively. This settlement is much less value than the allowable settlement 10cm for this structure.
