Twelve bacterial strains capable of growing on phenol minimal medium were isolated from iron foundry activated sludge by enrichment culture, and amount them, one isolate which was the best in cell growth and phenol degradation was selected and identified as Acinetobacter junii POH. The optimal temperature, initial pH and phenol concentration in the above medium were 3$0^{\circ}C$, 7.5 and 1000 ppm, respectively. Cell growth of Acinetobacter junii POH dramatically increased 20 hrs cultivation-time and reached a almost stationary phsae 40 hrs cultivation-time then phenol was degraded about 98%. Cell growth was inhibited y phenol at concentrations over 1500 ppm. The isolate was resistant to several antibiotics as well as various heavy metal ions. The growth-limiting log P value of Acinetobacter junii POH on organic solvents was 2.9 in the LB medium. Therefore, it is suggested that Acinetobacter junii POH could be effectively used for the biological treatment of wastewater containing the presence of heavy metal ions and organic solvents.
The lab-scale anaerobic continuous reactor which was filled with the sludge of anaerobic digestion from Suyoung wastewater treatment plant was operated by feeding of various concentrations and flow rates. This experiment indicated that more than 6,870 mgCOD/L of substrate concentration was required to promote good metabolism and growth of anaerobic biomass. And increasing loading rate slowly was also required in order to treat substrate of higher concentration and higher loading rate. The substrate concentration of about 10,000 mgCOD/L was adequate to generate biogas efficiently. The pH was sharply decreased at the onset of higher leading rate, but the pH was restabilized soon at 8. During the experiment, the amount of the attached biomass was kept constant.

In this study, dewaterability, one of the important properties of wastewater sludge, was investigated using a simple capillary suction time (CST) measurement method. It turned out that one could use the results of CST to find optimum flocculants ratio to improve drainage in wastewater treatment for the printing paper, tissue paper, and newsprint paper mill. Since the optimum ratio of flocculants could be determined with the value of CST, COD removal efficiency could be improved and optimum floc strength could be achieved with precise ratio of flocculants. It was thus that using CST for determining the optimum ratio of flocculants could be economical by reducing the amount of flocculants. Dewaterability could be measured within several seconds using the values of CST in a precise way. The dewaterability could also be useful in investigating the optimum ratio of flocculants.

We were tried to draw a conclusions related to additive amount of gypsum in blast furnace slag in the study. In the result, fluidity of concrete decreased with an increase of gypsum and was not satisfied with KS standard in the cases of natural gypsum and limestone sludge more than 2.6% addition. Early compressive strength of concrete containing desulfurized gypsum, fluosilicic acid gypsum and phosphoric acid gypsum were improved respectively but calcined lime sludge and lime powder were not influenced on strength. If available, additive gypsum should be managed less than 2.0% owing to low fluidity. In low temperature, fluosilicic acid gypsum was to advantages on the fluidity while desulfurized gypsum was in high temperature. There also are conclusions that additive gypsum was to be 2.6% in winter and in summer; it's to be fewer than 2.6%.
The effect of dissolved oxygen(DO) concentration on the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and it's mutant M-10 was studied the growth kinetics and the possibility of waste treatment for reducing the amount of excess sludge. Different DO concentrations on the growth of wild type Pseudomonas aeruginosa affected to cellular yields, decreasing with increasing DO concentrations. Under these conditions, the maximum 14 folds decrease of cellular yield was achieved at 90 ppm DO levels by screened, being able to reduce their cellular yields under low DO concentration. The optimum mutation conditions were obtained by the treatment of NTG mutagen at 30${\circ}C$ for 1 hr. The growth characteristics of the selected mutant M-10 showed the same as the wild type growth kinetics. However, cellular yields are significantly decreased to 55% compared with those of wild type under DO concentrations increased. We, therefore, expect the application of the mutants to waste treatment for reducing excess sludge.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of moisture content, temperature, C/N ratio and pH of the sewage sludge mixed with hulle and sawdusts for making compost under aerobic condition and to improve the defect of the structure of experimental equipment heat lose and handling method. and obtained results were as follows 1.The temperature was reached 73$^{\circ}$ C around 50 hours fermentation in the condition of 0.8 L/min. of air and 60.4% of moisture content. and favorable moisture content of initial condition ranged from 50 to 65% 2.The temperature near bottom of the batch composter was decreased due to evaporate water vapor and lose the heat produced during aeration. and it is required to be improved. 3.The temperature in the batch composter from the center to the inside wall surface was gradually decreased. the temperatures of the points located in r=9cm and the wall surface were 4$^{\circ}$ C and 6$^{\circ}$ C respectively. and therefore it is required to be insulated. 4. The maximum C02 production was obtained as 7.3% per volume in the temperature of 63$^{\circ}$C at the moisture content of 60% 5.The temperature range of active microbes growth was found to be as 20$^{\circ}$C to 40$^{\circ}$C in the case of mesophiles and 50$^{\circ}$C to 65$^{\circ}$C in the case of thermophiles due to increase and decrease C02 production. 6.C/N ratio after decomposition was 1.3 to 2.6 smaller than that of initial one due to increase the amount of nitrogen. The more C/N ratio increased. the less the reaction velocity decresed. The optimum of it as found to be 30. 7.pH values after decomposition were slightly increased than that of initial ones. The reaction velocity was decreased at acid and alkall condition. Therefore it is neseseary to neutralize the medium to improve the reaction.

In the quiescent state, cattle-manure slurry stratifies into three discernible layers, namely a floating scum layer, a bottom sludge layer and a watery middle layer. The proportions of top (scum), middle and bottom (sludge) layers were approximately 20, 60 and 20% respectively of the volume of the whole slurry. Particulate matter from the different stratified layers was characterised for particle size distribution and cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin composition. Total solids concentrations of top, middle and bottom layers were 12.7, 2.8 and 7.4% respectively. Larger particles were found in the top layer compared with the bottom. The top layer contained the highest amounts of Neutral Detergent Fibre (NDF), Acid Detergent Fibre (ADF), cellulose and hemicellulose, but the lowest amount of Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN). The bottom layer contained the highest amounts of Acid Detergent Lignin (ADL) and TKN. With increase in particle size, there were increases in NDF, ADF, cellulose and hemicellulose, accompanied by decreases in ADL and TKN. Biochemical methane potential of the three layers was also measured. The top layer was found to produce the most methane with the middle layer producing the least. Biomethanation rate from the top layer was also the highest. Differences in biomethanation rates and biochemical methane potential were attributed to differences in chemical composition of the particulate matter. About 48%, 23% and 30% of the total chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the top, middle and bottom layers respectively of the slurry was found to be degradable.

The 5-stage biological nutrient removal (BNR) process with step feed system showed a very stable organic carbon and nutrient removal efficiency ($87\%\;COD\,;79\%\;nitrogen,\;and\;87\%$ phosphorus) for an operation period of 2 years. In each stage at the pilot plant, microbial communities, which are important in removing nitrogen and phosphorus, were investigated using fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) and 165 rDNA characterization. All tanks of 5-stage sludge had a similar composition of bacterial communities. The totat cell numbers of each reactor were found to be around $2.36-2.83{\times}10^9$ cells/ml. About $56.5-62.0\%$ of total 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindol (DAPI) cells were hybridized to the bacterial-specific probe EUB388. Members of ${\beta}$-proteobacteria were the most abundant proteobacterial group, accounting for up to $20.6-26.7\%$. The high G+C Gram-positive bacterial group and Cytophaga-Flexibacter cluster counts were also found to be relatively high. The beta subclass proteobacteria did not accumulate a large amount of polyphosphate. The proportion of phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) in the total population of the sludge was almost $50\%$ in anoxic-1 tank. The high G+C Gram-positive bacteria and Cytophaga-Flexibacter cluster indicate a key role of denitrifying phosphorus-accumulating organisms (dPAOs). Both groups might be correlated with some other subclass of proteobacteria for enhancing nitrogen and phosphorus removal in this process.

This paper presents the geotechnical characteristics of the soil mixed with various waste(waste soil) in the landfill. The physical and mechanical tests were conducted to find out the waste soil. The tests include the gradation, consistency tests, shear and compression and the consolidation tests using both the Rowe cell and the constant ration stress. The analyses of the test results show the waste soil belongs to the well graded sand(SW) in the laboratory and sand-gravel(SG) to fine sand(SF) in the field monitoring based on the unified classification soil system. The shear strength is increasing with increasing the shear displacement, however, the peak of the shear strength does not appear through the test and there is no distinct peak value of the strength obtained. The compression index(Cc) results in as increasing the amount of the sludge included and the compression index is proportional to the sludge included, which means more settlement is expected. The hydraulic conductivity of the waste soil ranges between $1.6{\times}10^{-5}cm/sec$ and $1.8{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$.

In order to supplement insufficient nutrients of paper sludges, additional materials such as saw dust and rice husk were added during preparation of bed soils. Rice husk was more finely ground, compared to saw dust. The fine particles of the rice husk prevented their flow in a barrel of the expander. The mixed additives with paper sludges could be used to control the quantity of required nutrients for raising plants. That is, except for potassium and manganese, most of nutrients were decreased with adding the additives to paper sludge. The acidity of the paper sludges mixed with the saw dust or the rice husk was a little decreased with the increased amount of the additives. Differently from the bulk density of the paper sludges, the moisture content and the water absorption rate of the paper sludges were incremented with increasing the additives.
