  • We developed a visualization system for sports broadcasting that informs TV viewers of a sports player's sequential performing forms and locus in detail when gymnastic game such as‘vault’is broadcasted. It records the corresponding frames while a player is performing, extracts only the player's performing forms from background scenes by a proposed algorithm, superposes them sequentially on a background scene, and broadcasts them with slow speed. This system named as‘Multi-Motion’has ever been used in NHK live broadcasting for 1995 World Gymnastics Championships held in Japan.

  • Applications of LCD panel are getting more increased for motion-image applications. However, when the motion-images are displayed on LCD panels, they may be blurred due to slow response time of liquid crystal (LC). One of the solutions of the problem is overdrive technique. The technique has a lot of memory usage. In this paper, we propose a reduction method of the frame memory that is required for LCD overdrive. Proposed overdrive architecture consists of line-based lifting integer (5, 3) DWT filter for image data reduction and BLI (Bi-Linearly Interpolation) LUT for pixel value accelerating.

  • Ultrasonic pulsed Doppler velocimetry has become a standard international method of classifying carotid disease. Because the measured angle adjusted velocity increases as the Doppler angle increases, examinations should be performed at a convenient standard Doppler examination angle. An angle of 60 degrees is achievable throughout most examinations. Multiple Doppler viewing angles allow the acquisition of velocity vectors during the cardiac cycle, revealing the complex velocity patterns. Ultrasonic velocimetry (whether Doppler or time domain) is based on changes in the phase of the ultrasound echo. Other examinations can be done based on the echo phase. Slow motions of organs such as the brain can be used to monitor changes in edema. Measurements of tissue strain due to the pulsatile filling of the arterioles. This plethysmographic imaging method can display differences in tissue perfusion because of different tissue types and changes in autonomic activity.

  • New applications of streamlined Autonomous Underwater Vehicles require an AUV capable of completing missions with both high-speed straight-line runs and slow maneuvers or station keeping tasks. At low, or zero, forward speeds, the AUV's control surfaces become ineffective. To improve an AUV's low speed maneuverability, while maintaining a low drag profile, through-body tunnel thrusters have become a popular addition to modern AUV systems. The effect of forward vehicle motion and sideslip on these types of thrusters is not well understood. In order to characterize these effects and to adapt existing tunnel thruster models to include them, an experimental system was constructed. This system includes a transverse tunnel thruster mounted in a streamlined AUV. A 6-axis load cell mounted internally was used to measure the thrust directly. The AUV was mounted in Memorial University of Newfoundland's tow tank, and several tests were run to characterize the effect of vehicle motion on the transient and steady state thruster performance. Finally, a thruster model was modified to include these effects.

  • The performance of gas turbines decreases as their operating hours increase. Compressor fouling is the main reason for this time-dependent performance degradation. Airborne particles adhere to the blade surface and results in the change in the blade shape. It is difficult to exactly analyze the mechanism of the compressor fouling because the growing process of the fouling is very slow and the dimension of the fouled depth is very small compared with blade dimensions. In this study, an analytic method to predict the motion of particles and their deposition inside axial flow compressors is proposed. The analytic model takes into account the blade shape and the flow within the blade passage. Comparison of simulation result with field data shows the feasibility of the model. Influence of the particle distribution on the compressor fouling is also examined.

  • In the area of factory automation (FA), a lot of researches are being executed about intelligent system using network. Conventional industry controllers are implemented the connection with other controllers by using asynchronous serial communications. These methods of communication have an advantage of easy implementation but have disadvantages of lack of real-time characteristics needed in motion control, slow baud rate too low to exchange required data sufficiently and low integrity because of different communication protocol. Serial real-time communication system (SERCOS) provides international standard communication specifications (IEC 61491) for interfacing between control units and drives from different manufacturers, has real-time ...

  • A new end-effector has been devised and the problems resulted from using it with SCARA robots are discussed. The end effector has two modules: one composed of two ultrasonic motors and two encoders for controlling each finger, and the other module composed of two ultrasonic motors and two encoders for controlling the wrist. The wrist module adds two degrees of freedom to the SCARA type robot, which generally has four degrees of freedom. With independent finger actuation and touch sensors, the gripper under computer control can feedback information about part size and part presence. Ultrasonic motors with high torque and slow motion characteristics are used. The principle of ultrasonic motors is explained and the servo characteristics of ultrasonic motors are studied. They are controlled by the general motion controller (Hewlett Packard HCTL-1000) which is linked to an IBM-PC AT.

  • In this paper, design modification was performed to improve the structure of ex-developed 12 D.O.F Biped walking robot, KUBIR-1 similar with human beings. The motion of KUBIR-1 was slow and had a limited walking space. Hence I designed an improved BWR named KUBIR-2 with 12 degree of freedom. KUBIR-2 was designed to solve the following problems of KUBIR-1. First, KUBIR-2 was more simply designed in the four-bar-link mechanism, and its weight was reduced. Second, it had the built-in controller and motor driver. Third, walking velocity of KUBIR-2 was increased by improvement of speed and motion joint angle range. In addition to these, we modified the structure of the foot for more stable walking.

  • We proposed a method to improve moving object detection capability of Gaussian Mixture Model by suggesting shape adaptive bidirectional block matching algorithm. This method achieves more accurate detection and tracking performance at various motion types such as slow, fast, and bimodal motions than that of Gaussian Mixture Model. Experimental results showed that the proposed method outperformed the conventional methods.
