Based on the fully nonlinear velocity potential theory, the liquid sloshing in a three dimensional tank under random excitation is studied. The governing Laplace equation with fully nonlinear boundary conditions on the moving free surface is solved using the indirect desingularized boundary integral equation method (DBIEM). The fourth-order predictor-corrector Adams-Bashforth-Moulton scheme (ABM4) and mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) method are used for the time-stepping integration of the free surface boundary conditions. A smoothing scheme, B-spline curve, is applied to both the longitudinal and transverse directions of the tank to eliminate the possible saw-tooth instabilities. When the tank is undergoing one dimensional regular motion of small amplitude, the calculated results are found to be in very good agreement with linear analytical solution. In the simulation, the normal standing waves, travelling waves and bores are observed. The extensive calculation has been made for the tank undergoing specified random oscillation. The nonlinear effect of random sloshing wave is studied and the effect of peak frequency used for the generation of random oscillation is investigated. It is found that, even as the peak value of spectrum for oscillation becomes smaller, the maximum wave elevation on the side wall becomes bigger when the peak frequency is closer to the natural frequency.
In ocean industry, free surface type ART (Anti Roll tank) system has been widely used to suppress the roll motion of floating structures. In those, various obstacles have been devised to obtain the sufficient damping and to enhance the controllability of freely rushing water inside the tank. Most of previous researches have paid on the development of simple mathematical formula for coupled ship-ARTs analysis although other numerical and experimental approaches exist. Little attention has been focused on the use of 3D panel method for preliminary design of free surface type ART despite its advantages in computational time and general capacity for hydrodynamic damping estimation. This study aims at developing a potential theory based hydrodynamic code for the analysis of floating structure with baffled ARTs. The sloshing in baffled tanks is modeled through the linear potential theory with FE discretization and it coupled with hydrodynamic equations of floating structures discretized by BEM and FEM, resulting in direct coupled FE-BE formulation. The general capacity of proposed formulation is emphasized through the coupled hydrodynamic analysis of floating structure and sloshing inside baffled ARTs. In addition, the numerical methods for natural sloshing frequency tuning and estimation of hydrodynamic damping ratio of liquid sloshing in baffled tanks undergoing wave exiting loads are developed through the proposed formulation. In numerical examples, effects of natural frequency tuning and baffle ratios on the maximum and significant roll motions are investigated.

Two dimensional sloshing phenomena in regularly excited liquid cargo tank are numerically simulated with finite difference method. Navier-Stokes equations and continuity equation are computed for this study. The free-surface is determined every time step satisfying kinematic boundary condition using marker-density method. And the exciting force is treated by adding the acceleration of the tank to source term. The results are compared with other existing experiment results. And the comparison results show a good agreement. The sloshing phenomena in the tank of the 138K LNG carrier in sway motion is simulated with present calculation methods in low filling level. To find the relations between impact pressure and excitation condition, the calculations are performed in various amplitudes and periods. The averaged maximum pressures are compared each other.
This work describes the experimental investigations on sloshing characteristics of water and ferrofluid as working fluids in the spherical container with the horizontal oscillation motion and compared the results obtained by two working fluids. In order to Investigate the sloshing characteristics of the sphere container with the horizontal oscillation, experiments are performed with the magnetic intensities from 0 mT to 50 mT and horizontal oscillation motions from 5 mm to 15 mm. As results, Ferrofluid without magnetic field in the sphere container showed a similar liquid surface movement with water. The resonance point of the ferrofluid in the sphere container happened at higher value than that of the theoretical resonance frequency with the rise of the magnetic field. In addition, the sloshing characteristics of the ferrofluid in the sphere container can be controlled with the resonance frequency with the magnetic intensity and the liquid surface displacement could be also controlled.
The purpose of the development of KC-1 LNG cargo containment system is reduction in royalty and increase in competitiveness of shipbuilding industry. An assessment of structure safety for LNG cargo containment system under sloshing load due to ship motion has become an important design element. The ideal way is to implement fully interaction of the fluid domain and the cargo containment system. However the irregular sloshing pressure were idealized in the form of a triangular wave for safety assessment because the fluid- structure interaction analysis is taken the extensive computation time and difficult to ensure the accuracy of the results. In this study, the sloshing load was assumed to be a triangular wave with a maximum pressure of 10 bar during 15/1000 seconds. In the analytic results, the basic insulation panel of KC-1 LNG cargo containment system was assessed to be structurally safe for sloshing load.

This paper deals with the analytic and FEM analyses of sloshing frequency response of incompressible, invicid and irrotational flow in two dimensional rectangular tank. We use Laplace equation based on potential theory as governing equation. For small amplitude sloshing motion, the linearized free surface condition was applied and the analytic solution as obtained by the separation of variables. To simulate the effect of the energy dissipation due to viscous damping, artificial viscous coefficient is introduced and the divergence of response at resonance frequencies may be avoided by this coefficient. This problem was solved by FEM using 9-node elements in order to predict the maximum amplitude of sloshing response. Numerical results of free surface height, fluid pressure and fluid force show good agreement with those by analytic solution. After verifying the test FEM program, we analyze the frequency response characteristics of sloshing to the fluid height.

This paper deals with the FEM analysis of nonlinear sloshing of incompressible, invicid and irrotational flow in two dimensional rectangular tank. We use laplace equation based on potential theory as governing equation. For large amplitude sloshing motion, kinematic and dynamic free surface conditions derived from Bernoulli equation are applied. This problem is solved by FEM using 9-node elements. For the time integration and accurate velocity calculation, we introduce predictor-corrector time marching scheme and least square method. Also, numerical stability in tracking of free surface is obtained by direct calculation of free surface location to time variation. Numerical results of sloshing induced by harmonic excitations, while comparing with those of linear theory and references, prove the accuracy and stability. After verification of our program, we analyze sloshing response characteristics to the fluid height and the excitation amplitude.

Liquid sloshing in two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) rectangular tanks is simulated by using a level set method based on the finite volume method. In order to examine the effect of natural frequency modes on liquid sloshing, we considered a wide range of frequency ratios ($0.5{\leq}fr{\leq}3.2$). The frequency ratio is defined by the ratio of the excitation frequency to the natural frequency of the fluid, and covers natural frequency modes from 1 to 5. When fr = 1, which corresponds to the first mode of the natural frequency, strong liquid sloshing reveals roof impact, and significant forces are generated by the liquid in the tank. The liquid flows are mainly unidirectional. Thus, the strong bulk motion of the fluid contributes to a higher elevation of the free surface. However, at fr = 2, the sloshing is considerably suppressed, resulting in a calm wave with relatively lower elevation of the free surface, since the waves undergo destructive interference. At fr = 2, the lower peak of the free surface elevation occurs. At higher modes of $fr_3$, $fr_4$, and $fr_5$, the free surface reveals irregular deformation with nonlinear waves in every case. However, the deformation of the free surface becomes weaker at higher natural frequency modes. Finally, 3-D simulations confirm our 2-D results.

A new state-of-the-art sloshing research equipment has developed to perform the model test of LNG tanks for the safer design of LNG cargo containment system in violent sloshing phenomena. This sloshing test system has developed by the Samsung Ship Model Basin (SSMB) and thoroughly verified. The accuracy of the motion of hexapods equipment for the excitation of a model tank has been verified. The maximum displacement in six degrees of freedom, harmonic motions of various frequencies, and irregular motions in wave conditions are measured and compared with input signals. In order to confirm the reliability of the post-processing program for measured impact pressure, the post-processed results were compared with those of the reference institute. A benchmarking sloshing test using 1/50 scale model of 160K LNGC tank was conducted for the verification of the whole testing system. The partial filing levels were considered. As a result of the experiment, it is confirmed that the results are in good agreement with those of the reference institute.

A drillship is a representative floating offshore installation. The boom in oil and gas field development has dramatically increased the demands for drillships. Drillships have a moonpool in the center area of the ship for the purpose of drilling. This moonpool has an effect on the seakeeping performance of a drillship in the vicinity of the resonance frequency. Because of the moonpool, drillships act in different resonance modes, called the sloshing mode and piston mode. The objective of this study was to find the moonpool effect on the motion of a drillship through the motion analysis of a currently operating modern compact drillship. The predicted resonance frequencies based on Molin's theoretical formula, Fukuda's empirical formula, and BEM-based numerical analysis are compared. The accuracy of the predictions using the theoretical and empirical formulas is compared with the numerical analysis and evaluated. In the case of the piston mode, the difference between the resonance frequency from theoretical formula and the resonance frequency from the numerical analysis is analyzed. The resonance frequency formula for more a complex moonpool geometry such as a moonpool with a cofferdam is necessarily emphasized.
