Several studies have been conducted on monitoring system and automatic measuring instruments to prevent slope failure in advance in Korea and overseas. However, these studies have quite complex structure. Since most of the measurement systems are installed on the slope surface, the researches are carried on the measurement system that detects sign of slope collapse in advance and alerts are still unsatisfactory. In this study, slope collapse experiments were carried out to understand the slope failure mechanism according to rainfall conditions. The water content and displacement behavior at the early stage of the slope failure were analyzed through the measurement of the ground displacement and water content. The results of this study can be used by local government as a basic data for the design of slope failure alarm system to evacuate residents in case of slope failure or landslide due to heavy rainfall.
Recently, landslides frequently happen at a natural slope during period of intensive rainfall. With rapidly increasing population of steep terrain in Korea, landslides have become one of the most significant natural hazards. Thus, it is necessary to protect people from landslides and to minimize the damage of houses, roads and other facilities. To accomplish this goal, many landslide prediction methods have been developed in the world. In this study, a simple landslide prediction system that enables people to escape the endangered area is developed. The system is focused to debris flows which happen frequently during periods of intensive rainfall at steep slopes in Kangwondo. This system is based on the wireless sensor network that is composed of sensor nodes, gateway, and server system. Sensor nodes that are composed of sensing part and communication part are newly developed to detect sensitive ground movement. Sensing part is designed to measure tilt angle and acceleration accurately, and communication part is deployed with Bluetooth (IEEE 802.15. I) module to transmit the data to the gateway. To verify the feasibility of this landslide prediction system, a series of laboratory tests is performed at a small-scale earth slope supplying rainfall by artificial rainfall dropping device. It is found that sensing nodes installed at slope can detect the ground motion when the slope failure starts. It is expected that the landslide prediction system by wireless senor network can provide early warnings when landslides such as debris flow occurs, and can be applied to ubiquitous computing city (U-City) that is characterized by disaster free.
More than 70% of Korea consists of mountainous area and during the construction of roads and railroads many cut-slopes are inevitably formed. A number of environmental factors, such as the rainy season and frost heave during winter/thaw during spring, can result in rock falls and landslides. The failure of slopes is increasing every year and can cause damage to vehicles, personal injury and even fatality. In order to help protect people and property, there is a need for real-time monitoring systems to detect the early stages of slope failures. In this respect, the GMG has been using Translation Rotation Settlement (TRS) sensor units installed on slopes to monitor movement in real-time. However, the data lines of this system are vulnerable and the whole system can be damaged by a single lightning strike. In order to overcome this, GMG have proposed the use of Ubiquitous Sensor Networks (USN). The adoption of a USN system in lieu of data cables can help to minimize the risk of lightning damage and improve the reliability of slope monitoring systems.

Temperature variation according to space and time on the inner parts of engineering constructions(e.g.: dam, slope) can be a basic information for diagnosing their safety problem. In general, as constructions become superannuated, structural deformation(e.g.: cracks, defects) could be occurred by various factors. Seepage or leakage of water through these cracks or defects in old dams will directly cause temperature anomaly. Groundwater level also can be easily observed by abrupt change of temperature on the level. This study shows that the position of seepage or leakage in dam body can be detected by multi-channel temperature monitoring using thermal line sensor. For this, diverse temperature monitoring experiments for a leakage physical model were performed in the laboratory. In field application of an old dam, temperature variations for water depth and for inner parts of boreholes located at downstream slope were measured. Temperature monitoring results for a long time at the bottom of downstream slope of the dam showed the possibility that temperature monitoring can provide the synthetic information about flowing path and quantity of seepage of leakage in dam body.

Recently, landslides have frequently occurred on natural slopes during periods of intense rainfall. With a rapidly increasing population on or near steep terrain in Korea, landslides have become one of the most significant natural hazards. Thus, it is necessary to protect people from landslides and to minimize the damage of houses, roads and other facilities. To accomplish this goal, many landslide prediction methods have been developed in the world. In this study, a simple landslide prediction system that enables people to escape the endangered area is introduced. The system is focused to debris flows which happen frequently during periods of intense rainfall. The system is based on the wireless sensor network (WSN) that is composed of sensor nodes, gateway, and server system. Sensor nodes and gateway are deployed with Microstrain G-Link system. Five wireless sensor nodes and gateway are installed at the man-made slope to detect landslide. It is found that the acceleration data of each sensor node can be obtained via wireless sensor networks. Additionally, thresholds to determine whether the slope will be stable or not are proposed using finite element analysis. It is expected that the landslide prediction system by wireless senor network can provide early warnings when landslides such as debris flow occurs.
Medium-scale levee experiments were performed to monitor the infiltration and failure of levee body by applying fiber optic temperature sensing. In this study, bio-polymer soil was spread in the levee slope to increase the strength and intensity. Therefore, the infiltration and failure by overflows were produced in a different way compared to general soil type of levees. This was also observed in the experiment data for temperature changes monitored by fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing system. Through the analysis of temperature changes at specific location by time, the location and initiation time for physical changes and infiltration in levee body could be identified based on temperature variation. In this experiment, the time of rapid changes in temperature was ahead in the inland slope rather than the forceland slope. It was corresponding to the levee failure sequence of first inland slope failure and then the forceland slope failure.
A calcareous rock slope failed during excavation of the slope for construction of a tunnel entrance. The slope is located at the construction site for widening highway in Yeongwol, Korea. Field surveys, laboratory tests, and numerical analyses were performed to determine the reason for the slope failure. The numerical analysis revealed that the safety factor of the slope before construction of the entrance was less than 1, and that this decreased after construction. After construction of the entrance, the sliding zone of the slope increased and slope stability decreased because the shear strain and plastic zone in the slope over the tunnel entrance showed an increase relative to the lower part of the slope. To enhance the stability of the slope for construction of the tunnel entrance, countermeasures such as rock bolts, rock anchors, and FRP (Fiber glass Reinforced Plastic) grouting were adopted in light of the field conditions. Serial field monitoring performed to confirm the reinforcing effects of the adopted countermeasures revealed a small amount of horizontal deformation of the slope soils, most of the elastic deformation that can regain its former value. In addition, the axial forces of the rock bolt and anchor were more strongly affected by slope excavation during construction of the tunnel entrance than by tunnel excavation or the rainy season, and the axial forces tended to converge after excavation of the tunnel. Therefore, we can confirm that the slope is currently safe.

A wrist watch type wearable cardiovascular monitoring device is proposed for continuous and convenient monitoring of the patient's cardiovascular system. For comprehensive monitoring of the patient's cardiovascular system, the concurrent electrocardiogram (ECG) and arterial pulse wave (APW) sensor front-end are fabricated in $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The ECG sensor frontend achieves 84.6-dB CMRR and $2.3-{\mu}Vrms$-input referred noise with $30-{\mu}W$ power consumption. The APW sensor front-end achieves $3.2-V/{\Omega}$ sensitivity with accurate bio-impedance measurement lesser than 1% error, consuming only $984-{\mu}W$. The ECG and APW sensor front-end is combined with power management unit, micro controller unit (MCU), display and Bluetooth transceiver so that concurrently measured ECG and APW can be transmitted into smartphone, showing patient's cardiovascular state in real time. In order to verify operation of the cardiovascular monitoring system, cardiovascular indicator is extracted from the healthy volunteer. As a result, 5.74 m/second-pulse wave velocity (PWV), 79.1 beats/minute-heart rate (HR) and positive slope of b-d peak-accelerated arterial pulse wave (AAPW) are achieved, showing the volunteer's healthy cardiovascular state.

A reliability-based slope stability assessment method considering fluctuations in the monitored matric suction was proposed for real-time identification of slope risk. The assessment model was based on the limit equilibrium model for infinite slope failure. The first-order reliability method (FORM) was adopted to calculate the probability of slope failure, and results of the model were compared with Monte-Carlo Simulation (MCS) results to validate the accuracy and efficiency of the model. The analysis shows that a model based on Advanced First-Order Reliability Method (AFORM) generates results that are in relatively good agreement with those of the MCS, using a relatively small number of function calls. The contribution of random variables to the slope reliability index was also examined using sensitivity analysis. The results of sensitivity analysis indicate that the effective cohesion c' is a significant variable at low values of mean matric suction, whereas matric suction ($u_a-u_w$) is the most influential factor at high mean suction values. Finally, the reliability indices of an unsaturated model soil slope, which was monitored by a wireless matric suction measurement system, were illustrated as 2D images using the suggested probabilistic model.
Environmental monitoring systems are widely developed for analyzing environment and understanding an ecosystem according to the advance of wireless communication and various sensing techniques. To extract useful information, it requires high cost for processing a query, because these systems have to handle huge volume of raw sensor data which is transmitted from a wide area in environmental monitoring applications. Besides, it is also hard to answer an user defined query which requests to check current and near future condition. In this paper, we propose the monitoring system structure for processing a user defined query for environmental monitoring. It also describes the utilization of sensor data filtering and abstraction model. The designed abstraction model which is based on the slope grid in GIS supports fast data access and update. To analyze condition, the extracted data from abstraction model of each sensor type is combined in a query processor. It is useful to provide meaningful information to users.
