  • Based on the eigenfunction expansion method, the interaction between monochromatic waves and a partially immersed slotted plate with a back wall has been investigated. Analytical results show that the reflection coefficients by a partially immersed slotted plate depend on the porosity, immersed depth, chamber width, incidence angle and wave frequency. It is found that the reflection coefficient has minimum value within entire frequency range when the porosity has optimal value 0.1. Comparison between the analytical results and the experimental results(Zhu,2001) of reflection coefficients is made for various chamber widths, immersed depths and wave periods with good agreement. The present analytic method can account adequately for energy dissipation caused by flow separation behind a slotted plate and provide the design informations for the construction of slit caisson breakwater.

  • A new type of earthquake-resisting element that consists of a steel plate shear wall with slits is introduced. The infill steel plate is divided into a series of vertical flexural links with vertical links. The steel plate shear walls absorb energy by means of in-plane bending deformation of the flexural links and the energy dissipation capacity of the plastic hinges formed at both ends of the flexural links when under lateral loads. In this paper, finite element analysis and experimental studies at low cyclic loadings were conducted on specimens with steel plate shear walls with multilayer slits. The effects caused by varied slit pattern in terms of slit design parameters on lateral stiffness, ultimate bearing capacity and hysteretic behavior of the shear walls were analyzed. Results showed that the failure mode of steel plate shear walls with a single-layer slit was more likely to be out-of-plane buckling of the flexural links. As a result, the lateral stiffness and the ultimate bearing capacity were relatively lower when the precondition of the total height of the vertical slits remained the same. Differently, the failure mode of steel plate shear walls with multilayer slits was prone to global buckling of the infill steel plates; more obvious tensile fields provided evidence to the fact of higher lateral stiffness and excellent ultimate bearing capacity. It was also concluded that multilayer specimens exhibited better energy dissipation capacity compared with single-layer plate shear walls.

  • The objective of this research is to develop a practical design and assessment approach of steel frames with steel slit walls (SSWs) that focuses on the damage-control behavior to enhance the structural resilience. The yielding sequence of SSWs and frame components is found to be a critical issue for the damage-control behavior and the design of systems. The design concept is validated by the full-scale experiments presented in this paper. Based on a modified energy-balance model, a procedure for designing and assessing the system motivated by the framework regarding the equilibrium of the energy demand and the energy capacity is proposed. The damage-control spectra constructed by strength reduction factors calculated from single-degree-of-freedom systems considering the post stiffness are addressed. A quantitative damage-control index to evaluate the system is also derived. The applicability of the proposed approach is validated by the evaluation of example structures with nonlinear dynamic analyses. The observations regarding the structural response and the prediction during selected ground motions demonstrate that the proposed approach can be applied to damage-control design and assessment of systems with satisfactory accuracy.

  • Spiral jet is characterized by a wide region of the free vortex flow with a steep axial velocity gradient, while swirl jet is largely governed by the forced vortex flow and has a very low axial velocity at the jet axis. However, detailed generation mechanism of spiral flow components is not well understood, although the spiral jet is extensively applied in a variety of industrial field. In general, it is known that spiral jet is generated by the radial flow injection through an annular slit which is installed at the inlet of convergent nozzle. The objective of the present study is to understand the flow characteristics of the spiral jet, using a computational method. A finite volume scheme is used to solve 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The computational results are validated by the previous experimental data. It is found that the spiral jet is generated by coanda effect at the inlet of the convergent nozzle and its fundamental features are dependent the pressure ratio of the radial flow through the annular slit and the coanda wall curvature.

  • In this study, the electromagnetic coupling through a narrow slit in the upper wall of a short-ended parallel-plate waveguide(PPW) covered by a dielectric slab with a nearby conducting strip on the slab Is considered for the case that the TEM wave is incident in the PPW. Coupled integral equations whose unknowns are the slit electric field and the induced electric current over the strip are derived and solved numerically by use of the method of moments. From results, it has been observed that most of the incident power can be coupled exterior to the guide by appropriately setting the strip width and position, though the slit is very narrow. In addition, the differences between the radiation phenomena, observed in the cases that the conducting strip and the upper Plate of the PPW form a cavity and that strip behaves like a parasitic element, are discussed.

  • The objective of conventional seismic design is to ensure an acceptable safety level while avoiding catastrophic failures of structures and loss of life. Over the last many years, a large amount of research has been devoted into developing effective earthquake resistant systems in order to raise the seismic performance level of structures. The purpose of this study is to propose a new damping system, which realize not only increasing seismic performance but also easy repairing after an earthquake. The proposed damping system is slit in the bottom of wall with damping devices installed in the slit horizontally aiming to dissipate energy during earthquakes. Cyclic loading tests were conducted to investigate hysteretic behavior and energy dissipation capacity. Test results show that the proposed systems exhibit a stable hysteretic response and the energy dissipation in this system is concentrated on the damping devices.
