The characteristics of motile microorganism and three dimensional Darcy-Forchheimer nanofluid flow by a porous rotatable disk with heat generation/absorption is reported. Thermophoretic and Brownian motion aspects are included by utilizing Buongiorno model. Moreover, slip conditions are considered on velocity, thermal, concentration and microorganism. Shooting procedure is implemented to find the numerical results of physical quantities are evaluated parametrically. The different physical parameters like heat sink/source parameter, thermal, Brownian number, thermophoresis parameter, concentration, Peclet number, bioconvected Lewis number, microorganism on concentration and density of motile microorganism distributions is considered. Graphs of concentration and microorganism are plotted to examine the influence of distinct prominent flow parameters.
In this study, the data used for the models were a set of 56 geologic estimates of long-term fault slip rates. The hest models were those in which mantle drag was convergent on the Transverse Ranges in the San Andreas fault system, and faults had a low friction (${\mu}$= 0.3). It is clearly important to decide whether these cases of low strength are local anomalies or whether they are representative. Furthermore, it would be helpful to determine fault strength in as many tectonic settings as possible. Analysis of data was considered by unsuspected sources of pore pressure, or even to question the relevance of the friction law. To contribute to the solution of this problem, three attempts were tried to apply finite element method that would permit computational experiments with different hypothesized fault rheologies. The computed model has an assumed rheology and plate tectonic boundary conditions, and produces predictions of present surface velocity, strain rate, and stress. The results of model will be acceptably close to reality in its predictions of mean fault slip rates, stress directions and geodetic data. This study suggests some implications of the thermoelastic characteristics to interpret the relationship with very low strength of San Andreas fault system.

The mechanical limited slip differential (LSD) in vehicles is being replaced by the electromagnetic LSD because of its fast response and better active control characteristics. The coil housing made of STS 304 is one of the most important parts in the solenoid assembly of the electromagnetic LSD. High geometrical accuracy is a prerequisite for the manufacture of such coil housings, but precision machining is difficult because of the use of STS 304 thin plate and the variance in machining variables. The aim of this study is to optimize the mean and variance of the shape accuracy in the coil housing by finding a robust solution for the machining process conditions. The mean and standard deviation of the jaw contact pressure, cutting speed, and feed rate are considered to be the major parameters for minimizing the geometrical mean and variance. The response surface model based on the second-order Taylor series is combined together to minimize the mean and variance of the shape accuracy of the coil housing.
In the current practice for slope stability problem in Japan, the shear strength, $\tau$, mobilized along the failure surface is usually estimated based on an empirical approximation in which the cohesion, c, is assumed to be equal to the soil thickness above the supposed slip surface, d(m). This approximation is advantageous in that the result of stability analysis is not influenced by the designers in charge. However, since the methodology has little theoretical background, the cohesion may often be grossly overestimated, and conversely the angle of shear resistance, $\phi$, is significantly underestimated, when the soil thickness above the supposed slip surface is quite large. In this paper, a case record of natural slope failure that took place in Hyogo Prefecture in 2007, is described in detail for the case in which the shear strength along the collapsed surface was carefully examined in a series of direct shear box (DSB) tests by considering the effects of in-situ shear stress along the slip surface. It is demonstrated that the factor of safety agrees with that of in-situ conditions when the shear strength from this kind of DSB test was employed for the back-analysis of the slope failure.
PURPOSES : In this study, a fracture-based finite element (FE) model is proposed to evaluate the fracture behavior of fiber-reinforced asphalt (FRA) concrete under various interface conditions. METHODS : A fracture-based FE model was developed to simulate a double-edge notched tension (DENT) test. A cohesive zone model (CZM) and linear viscoelastic model were implemented to model the fracture behavior and viscous behavior of the FRA concrete, respectively. Three models were developed to characterize the behavior of interfacial bonding between the fiber reinforcement and surrounding materials. In the first model, the fracture property of the asphalt concrete was modified to study the effect of fiber reinforcement. In the second model, spring elements were used to simulated the fiber reinforcement. In the third method, bar and spring elements, based on a nonlinear bond-slip model, were used to simulate the fiber reinforcement and interfacial bonding conditions. The performance of the FRA in resisting crack development under various interfacial conditions was evaluated. RESULTS : The elastic modulus of the fibers was not sensitive to the behavior of the FRA in the DENT test before crack initiation. After crack development, the fracture resistance of the FRA was found to have enhanced considerably as the elastic modulus of the fibers increased from 450 MPa to 900 MPa. When the adhesion between the fibers and asphalt concrete was sufficiently high, the fiber reinforcement was effective. It means that the interfacial bonding conditions affect the fracture resistance of the FRA significantly. CONCLUSIONS : The bar/spring element models were more effective in representing the local behavior of the fibers and interfacial bonding than the fracture energy approach. The reinforcement effect is more significant after crack initiation, as the fibers can be pulled out sufficiently. Both the elastic modulus of the fiber reinforcement and the interfacial bonding were significant in controlling crack development in the FRA.

Recently, the probability of rock joints being exposed to free faces is getting higher for the scale of rock mass structures gets larger. Also, the frequency of occurring dynamic events such as earthquakes and blasting has been increasing. Thus, the shear behavior of rock joints under different conditions needs to be investigated. In this study, a series of direct shear tests were carried out under various conditions to examine the velocity-dependent shear behavior of saw-cut rock joints. Two types of direct shear test were carried out. The first was to examine the velocity-dependent shear behavior of saw-cut rock joints at seven different shear velocities, each with three different normal stresses. The second was to examine the shear behavior of saw-cut rock joints when three different instantaneous shear velocities changed. As a result, the coefficient of friction was affected by normal stress. The breakpoint velocity, the point when the change of shear velocity starts to affect the frictional behavior, became lower as normal stress increased. Also, as the shear velocity became lower, the degree of stress-drop on stick-slip behavior became larger. As a result of examining the changes of friction coefficient, velocity weakening (decrease of friction coefficient) was observed. The decrement of friction coefficient due to the changes of shear velocity under slow shear velocity was larger than that under fast shear velocity.

Efficient simultaneous reduction conditions for $NO_x$ and $NH_3$-slip was investigated in SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) process with load variation by applying dual catalysts (SCR catalyst, $NH_3$ decomposition catalyst) system. $N_2O$ formation characteristics were analyzed to look into possible undesirable reaction pathways. In the experiments of catalyst characteristics, various operational variables were tested for the combined catalytic system, such as $NH_3/NO_x$ ratio, temperature, oxygen concentration and $H_2O$. The reaction characteristics of $NO_x$, $NH_3$ and $N_2O$ were analyzed and optimal conditions could be evaluated for the combustion facility with varied load. In terms of $NO_x/NH_3$ simultaneous reduction and $N_2O$ formation suppression, optimal condition was considered NSR 1.2 and temperature $300^{\circ}C$. At this operational condition, $NO_x$ conversion was 98%, $NH_3$ reduction efficiency was 95%, generated $N_2O$ concentration 9.5 ppm with inlet $NO_x$ concentration of 100 ppm. In $NH_3-SCR$ process with $NH_3$ decomposition catalyst, $NO_x$ and $NH_3$ can be considered to be reduced simultaneously at limited conditions. The results of this study may be utilized as basic data at facilities requiring simultaneous $NO_x$ and $NH_3$ reduction for facilities with load variation.
A new bounce back boundary method of the second order in error is proposed for the lattice Boltzmann fluid simulation. This new method can be used for the arbitrarily irregular lattice geometry of a non-slip boundary. The traditional bounce back boundary condition for the lattice Boltzmann simulation is of the first order in error. Since the lattice Boltzmann method is the second order scheme by itself, a boundary technique of the second order has been desired to replace the first order bounce back method. This study shows that, contrary to the common belief that the bounce back boundary condition is unilaterally of the first order, the second order bounce back boundary condition can be realized. This study also shows that there exists a generalized bounce back technique that can be characterized by a single interpolation parameter. The second order bounce back method can be obtained by proper selection of this parameter in accordance with the detailed lattice geometry of the boundary. For an illustrative purpose, the transient Couette and the plane Poiseuille flows are solved by the lattice Boltzmann simulation with various boundary conditions. The results show that the generalized bounce back method yields the second order behavior in the error of the solution, provided that the interpolation parameter is properly selected. Coupled with its intuitive nature and the ease of implementation, the bounce back method can be as good as any second order boundary method.
In electric motor coaches, the rolling stocks move by the adhesive effort between rail and driving wheel. Generally, the adhesive effort is defined by the function of both the weight of electric motor coach and the adhesive effort between rails and driving wheel. The characteristics of adhesive effort is strongly affected by the conditions between rails and driving wheel. When the adhesive effort decreases suddenly, the electric motor coach has slip phenomena. This paper proposes a re-adhesion control algorithm which uses the maximum adhesive effort by instantaneous estimation of adhesion force using disturbance observer. Based on this estimated adhesive effort, the re-adhesion control is performed to obtain the maximum transfer of the tractive effort.

Fatigue tests were carried out to find the fatigue characteristics in the super-long life range by using a cantilever type rotational bending fatigue test machine. Three kinds of specimen in bearing steels with the quenched and tempered in air (A and B, B: shot peened after heal treatment) and under vacuum conditions(C:non-shot peened)were tested in this study. S-N curves obtained from fatigue tests of C specimen tend to come dawn again in the super-long life range due to fish-eye type cracking, while most of A and B specimens fractured by surface defects such as scratches and slip lines. This duplex S-N behavior for the high strength steels have to be reviewed by the change of fracture modes.
