  • Ion implantation has been used successfully as a surface treatment technology to improve the wear. fatigue and corrosion resistances of materials. A modified surface layer by ion implantation is very thin(under 1 m), but it has different mechanical properties from the substrate. It has also different wear characteristics. Since wear is a dynamic phenomenon on interacting surfaces with relative motion, an effective method for investigtating the wear of a thin layer is the observation of wear process in microscopic detail using in-situ system. The change of wear properties produces the transition of wear mode. To know the microscopic wear mechanism of this thin layer, it is very important to clarify its microscopic wear mode. In this paper, using the SEM and AFM Rribosystems as in-situ system, the microscopic wear of Ti ion-implanted 1C-3Cr steel, a material for roller in the cold working process, was investigated in repeated sliding. The depth of wear groove and the speciffc wear amount were changed with transition of microscopic wear mode. The depth of wear groove with friction cycles in AFM tribosystem and specific wear amount of Ti ion-implanted 1C-3Cr steel were less about 2-3 times than those of non-implanted 1C-3Cr steel. The microscopic wear mechansim of Ti ion-implanted 1C-3Cr steel was also clarified. The microscopic wear property was quantitatively evaluated in terms of microscopic wear mode and specific wear amount.

  • Ball reducer (HERB Drive: High Efficient Wave Rolling Ball Drive) with waved grooves has many advantages over other types of reducers for high-reduction ratio, low noise and low energy loss, etc. The mechanism of force transmission is very similar to that of cam and follower in automobile valve train system especially in contact behaviors. In this study, we have investigated the traces of contact between ball and outer ring, and the dynamic contact behaviors of elastohydodynamic lubrication(EHL) with a certain reduction ratio. In order to verify the contact behaviors between ball and outer ring for the critical endurance lift, the contact velocity and load are computed for a cycle. During some intervals of a cycle, the contact velocity reverses its direction very suddenly. It is expected that changing the contact direction causes undesirable endurance performance because EHL film frequently col lapse at the moment of velocity reversal. From the computational investigation in this work, we hope to predict similar contact damages in other machinery due to this kind of contact behaviors, which is very typical in many contact phenomena.

  • For areas such as the Korean Peninsula, which have moderate seismic activity but no available records of strong ground motion, synthetic seismograms can be used to evaluate ground motion without waiting for a strong earthquake. Such seismograms represent the estimated ground motions expected from a set of possible earthquake scenarios. Local site effects are especially important in assessing the seismic hazard and possible ground motion scenarios for a specific fault. The earthquake source and rupture dynamics can be described as a two-step process of rupture initiation and front propagation controlled by a frictional sliding mechanism. The seismic wavefield propagates through heterogeneous geological media and finally undergoes near-surface modulations such as amplification or deamplification. This is a complex system in which various scales of physical phenomena are integrated. A unified approach incorporates multi-scale problems of dynamic rupture, radiated wave propagation, and site effects into an all-in-one model using a three-dimensional, fourth-order, staggered-grid, finite-difference method. The method explains strong ground motions as products of complex systems that can be modified according to a variety of fine-scale rupture scenarios and friction models. A series of such deterministic earthquake scenarios can shed light on the kind of damage that would result and where it would be located.

  • It is a common failure type that high-filled embankment slope sideslips. The deformation mechanism and factors influencing the sideslip of embankment slope is the key to reduce the probability of this kind of engineering disaster. Taking Liujiawan high-filled embankment slope as an example, the deformation and failure characteristics of embankment slope and sheet-pile wall are studied, and the factors influencing instability are analyzed, then the correlation of deformation rate of the anti-slide plies and each factor is calculated with multivariate linear regression analysis. The result shows that: (1) The length of anchoring segment is not long enough, and displacement direction of embankment and retaining structure are perpendicular to the trend of the highway; (2) The length of the cantilever segment is so large that the active earth pressures behind the piles are very large. Additionally, the surface drainage is not smooth, which leads to form a potential sliding zone between bottom of the backfill and the primary surface; (3) The thickness of the backfill and the length of the anti-slide pile cantilever segment have positive correlation with the deformation whereas the thickness of anti-slide pile through mudstone has a negative correlation with the deformation. On the other hand the surface water is a little disadvantage on the embankment stability.

  • This paper presents modal analysis and mean conveying velocity (M.C.V.) control of bowl parts feeder activated by piezoactuators. Bowl parts feeders are being widely used in many industry fields for automatic assembly line. In general, the electromagnet has been and being used as exciting actuator of these vibratory bowl feeders. However, because of complexity of its mechanism and limited capability of the electromagnet actuator, there exist various impending problems such as severe noise, nonlinear motion of parts, passive characteristics and so forth. As one of solutions for these problems, piezoelectric actuators as new actuating technology have been proposed recently to excite the bowl parts feeder. In this paper, modal analysis of the proposed model has been performed to examine the modal characteristics of the model by using commercial FEM software and modeling with respects to MCV is constructed. Finally, MCV of the parts is to be controlled to track the desired one with PID controller.

  • The objective of this study is to develop an automatic object changer unit to improve changing process problems existing in the conventional horizontal machining center. In order to perform this objective, an upward and downward traverse unit was designed. This unit consists of a motor, reducer, chain and sprocket wheel, and an upper and lower base. This automatic object changer unit performs a sliding contact motion in a purpose built and designed frame. Constraint conditions for the upward and downward traverse unit were first designed. Then, an operation mechanism was designed and introduced as the sum of the kinetic energy for the sprocket wheel and the upper and lower base and which was based on the moment of inertia, which is the kinetic energy of the converted upward and downward traverse unit in the side of the reducer. The paper covers the design of th e Automatic Pallet Changer for th e machining center.

  • Passive type mufflers installed on every car haute inherent problem of lowering engine power and fuel efficiency caused by backpressure which is byproduct of complex internal structure. Recent improvements like installing a calve to change exhaust gas path depending on power requirement and rpm have only marginally improved performance. Tremendous amount of recent research works on active exhaust noise control have failed to commercialize because of numerous physical and economical reasons. In this paper, a unique seal-active muffler using difference of transmission paths is presented. In this system exhaust pipe is divided into two and joined again downstream. Exhaust noise is reduced by destructive interference when two-divided noise join again with transmission paths'difference which is half of the wavelength of a main noise frequency. One divided path has a sliding mechanism to change length thereby transmission path length difference is adjusted to entwine rpm change. The proposed system has minimal backpressure and does not need a secondary sound source like a speaker so it can overcome many problems of failed active noise control methods. We have verified proposed system's superior performance by simulation and comparison experiment with passive mufflers.

  • The fractal dimension is quantitatively to define the irregular characteristic of the shape in natural. It can be useful in describing morphological characteristics of various wear particles. This paper was undertaken to diagnose failure condition for sliding members in lubrication by fractal dimension. It will be possible to diagnose wear mechanism, friction and damage state of machines through analysis of shape characteristics for wear particle on driving condition by fractal parameters. In this study, the calculating and analyzing methods of fractal dimensions were constructed for the condition monitoring and wear particle analysis in lubricant condition. So, we carried out the Friction and wear test with the ball on disk type tester, and the fractal parameters of wear particle in lubricated conditions were calculated. Fractal parameters were defined as texture fractal dimension ($D_{t}$), structure fractal dimension ($D_{s}$) and total fractal dimension (D).

  • The surfaces of machine components in sliding contact such as bearing, gears and pistons etc. frequently operate under the condition of mixed lubrication due to high load, high speed and slip. These machine components often undergo the inception of scuffing in practical application. The scuffing failure is a critical problem in modern machine components, especially for the requirement of high efficiency and small size. However, it is difficult to find a universal mechanism to explain all scuffing phenomena because there are so many factors affecting the onset of scuffing. In this study, scuffing experiments are conducted using Acoustic Emission(AE) measurement by an indirect sensing approach to detect scuffing failure. Acoustic Emission(AE) signal has been widely utilized to monitor the interaction at the friction interface. Using AE signals we can get an indication about the state of the friction processes, about the quality of solid and liquid layers eon the contacting surfaces in real time. The FFT(Fast Fourier Transform)analyses of the AE signal are used to understand the interfacial interaction and the relationship between the AE signal and the state of contact is presented
