  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the dental caries activity of some commercial drinks. Methods : Acidity levels were recorded as pH values of original drinks and amount of 50%-sodium hydroxide(NaOH) required to neutralize by titration 50.00ml of the drink(It was called titratable acid). Acidity of the drinks with S. sobrinus was measured at an interval of one hour after incubating ($37^{\circ}C$) the test drinks and control solution which was composed 20.00ml of neutralized drinks as pH 7.0 with 0.2ml of a pooled suspension of S. sobrinus. Results : The drink with the highest pH value was the Cow's milk(pH $6.70{\pm}0.01$), and the most acidic was the Carbonated drink(pH $2.40{\pm}0.02$). The drink with the highest buffer effect was the Fruit juice($139.78{\pm}0.76$), and the lowest was the Glucose solution(control, $4.42{\pm}0.20$). The drinks with S. sobrinus during incubation at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24h were decreased to below critical pH 5.5. Spending times from pH 7.0 to pH 5.5~5.0 were Glucose solution(less than 1h). Carbonated drink(3h), Fruit juice(5h), Cow's milk(8h) and Mixed drink(21h). Conclusions: These results show that some commercial drinks with S. sorbrinus have the possibility of tooth decalcification. Thus, it is suggested that the people who have the low salivary secretion rate and the children who sleep without toothbrushing after drinking need the instruction for diet control and oral health education.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of perceived stress on dietary habits and oral health behaviors in Korean adolescents. Data were from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS) in 2011. A total of 74,186 adolescents were surveyed using the self-administered questionnaire. Logistic regression analyses were performed to elucidate the effects of perceived stress on dietary habits and oral health behaviors. Statistical analyses were conducted, and p<0.05 were considered significant. We found that adolescents with higher stress were more likely to increase the risk of adverse dietary habits (low consumption of fruits, vegetables and milk, high consumption of carbonated soft drinks, fast food and cookie) compared to those with lower stress. Regarding the relationship between perceived stress and oral health behaviors, adolescents with higher stress were less likely to practice oral health behaviors such as brushing teeth after snack consumption and brushing teeth before sleep compared to those with lower stress. This result indicates that adolescents' perceived stress might play a significant role in the negative dietary habits and oral health behavior.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of body-shape perception and periodontal diseases in female adolescents based on the sixth 3rd-year(2015) data of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The subjects in this study were 211 female teenagers who were at the western ages of 12 to 18. As a result of analyzing, it's found that the body-shape perception of the female teens were linked to age, sleep hours, BMI, weight control and toothbrushing frequency, and whether they had periodontal diseases or not was found to be under the influence of age, smoking, sleep hours, stress, BMI and toothbrushing frequency. When the relationship between their body-shape perception and peridontal diseases was analyzed by controlling the confounders, the adolescents who considered their own bodies to be obese suffered from 3.18-fold more periodontal diseases(OR=3.18, 95% CI: 1.21, 8.38) than the teenagers who considered their body shape to be average. In the future, oral health care should be provided in consideration of the mental health of female adolescents to prevent periodontal diseases.

  • This survey was performed as a pilot of comprehensive survey of 18-month old infants which is an important period in pediatric dentistry. Through the oral examination of 154 infants of 18-month age, labored at Pusan National University Hospital and Ilsin Christian Hospital, and direct interview with their first caregivers (mother in most cases), we investigated into the state of their weaning and feeding, between-meal snacks, oral hygiene care, tooth eruption and dental caries and obtained the results as follows : 1. 73% of the infants had not yet weaned, and 82% of which were being milked during or before sleep without oral hygine care. 2. Snacks were taken in order of fruits, biscuits, cheese, bread and candies, and beverages in order of water, fermented milks, milk, sugared juice, fresh fruit juice. 61% of the infants ate snacks irregularly. 3. The toothbrush for infants was the most popular way of oral hygiene care. The mean age of initiation of tooth brushing was 13.8 months and the mean frequency was 1.6 times a day. 4. The incisors in all infants, the 1st molars in 86%, and canines in 66% were erupted. The average number of erupted teeth was 14.1. 5. The caries prevalence rate was 27.3% and 73% of total caries was observed in maxillary deciduous incisors. dmft index was 0.97. Through these results, it was concluded that a systematic education about weaning time, mode of snacking and the way of oral hygine care is required for the parents.

  • A pilot study was undertaken to examine the possible health effects of electromagnetic fields(EMFs). The purpose of this study was to investigate of the EMFs exposures of personal environment, 60Hz magnetic fields. An experimental study was performed for six weeks of January-February 1998 to compare changes in melatonin levels in urine of 20 subjects during their normal sleeping hours and each 20 subjects in occupational and non-occupational group measured personal 24-h continual exposure, using EMDEX II (for 40-800Hz, Enertech Consultant, Inc.). An urine samples were collected 3 times a day(before sleep or around 24:00 ; immediately after wake-up ; around noon) for an week from each subjects and analyzed by radioimmunoassay. This study did not significant difference for the subjective average melatonin levels between occupational and nonoccupational groups exposed to electromagnetic fields. The mean personal exposure levels of occupational group were $0.215{\mu}T$, whereas non-occupational group were $0.18{\mu}T$. Occupational group were exposed more highly while at work. Finally, this study would provide significant data for furture study of exposure assessment of magnetic fields. A large scale study concerning more detailed exposure assessment should provide important information on health risk assessment of MFs. Further study should provide information on the contribution of various sources and the relationship between melatonin and immune system activity.

  • The study surveyed 1,127 mothers whose children aged 3 to 5 went to 25 randomly selected kindergartens, which were located in Busan Metropolitan City and the adjacent Gimhae City, and analyzed the preventive health behaviors on their children and the condition of home health education on their children. As the compulsory kindergarten education will e to be implemented within 4 years, this study aimed to draw up the rudimentary material for health education at kindergartens. The study results are summed up as follows: 1. Mothers' awareness of health-related attitude and behavioral level for their children at kindergarten: 1) The general health condition of the children, which mothers are aware of, was that they were healthy on the whole. As their children becomes older, the income level of the parents is lower, and mothers have lower level of educational standard, the health condition of the children was found a little lower. 2) In terms of mothers' recognition of the practice level of preventive health behaviors, the items such as going to bed regularly, washing hands and feet well, and having meals regularly were high in the practice level, while exercise and tooth-brushing were not practiced well. 2. The condition of mothers' health education of their children: 1) It was found that washing hands and feet, restriction of overeating and preference for specific kinds of food, guidance on regular sleep and regular meal were practiced well among items of home health education targeting kindergarten children. 2) Mothers have obtained information on family health from printed matter such as newspaper or magazine rather than the visual media. 3) From the cross analysis of mothers' health education on children and children's health behaviors, as the standard of education of mothers was higher, so was the level of preventive health behaviors of children. 3. From the result of multi regression analysis of the factors influencing the preventive hygiene of kindergarten children, it was found that as the home health education level was higher, so was the health behavior of children. On the other hand, as the mothers were older, the health behavior of children became lower.

  • Objectives: This study examines the occurrence of disease resulting from low back pain and factors of working environment meaningfully influencing the occurrence of lumbago as well as analyzes '2nd Korean Working Condition Survey (KWCS)' conducted in 2010 so as to establish the prevention and improvement measures. Methods: The analysis method is that it is to compare the prevalence rate of low back pain according to working environment via odds ratio and to implement the test about the factors having the difference in working environment between low back pain group and normal group through weighted t-test. Results: As a result, it indicates that there is a meaningful difference for prevalence rate of low back pain according to age, status in employment and education level which are socio-demographical factors. The analysis in working hours shows that the period of work is a factor raising the prevalence rate of low back pain rather than weekly working hours. The analysis in the work risk factor indicates that the increase in prevalence rate of low back pain takes place to either workers with repetitive movement and continuously standing posture or those with heavy stress and emotional labour. Conclusions: Workers with low back pain have suffered from accident, depression, anxiety disorder and sleep. The factors in which the prevalence rate of low back pain decrease are to provide information on health and safety and working speed, and enough rest.
