  • A Bridge Transported Servo Manipulator (BTSM) for Advanced spent fuel Conditioning Process (ACP) has been developed to overcome the limitation of access that is a drawback of Mechanical master-slave manipulators (MSMs) for the equipment maintenance. Wire-driven mechanisms have been adopted to increase the handling capacity to weight. The main disadvantage of the wire driven mechanism is that if one link is in motion, other links can be affected because wires and links are coupled. In this paper, the relationship between pulleys and links are formiliarized to overcome this drawbacks, Derived equations are proven and analyzed through experiments.

  • With a remote operated manipulator system, the situation at a remote site can be rendered through remote visualized image to the operator. Then the operator can quickly realize situations and control the slave manipulator by operating a master input device based on the information of the virtual image. In this study, the remote operator visual support system (ROVSS) was developed for viewing support of a remote operator to perform the remote task effectively. A visual support model based on virtual environment was also inserted and used to fulfill the need of this study. The framework for the system was created by Windows API based on PC and the library of 3D graphic simulation tool such as ENVISION. To realize this system, an operation test environment for a limited operating site was constructed by using experimental robot operation. A 3D virtual environment was designed to provide accurate information about the rotation of robot manipulator, the location and distance of operation tool through the real time synchronization. In order to show the efficiency of the visual support, we conducted the experiments by four methods such as the direct view, the camera view, the virtual view and camera view plus virtual view. The experimental results show that the method of camera view plus virtual view has about 30% more efficiency than the method of camera view.

  • After many years of proliferation, the nuclear industry is indebted for a formidable consequence, the safe management of spent fuel. Naturally, the high radioactivity involved with such process motivates the development of effective telerobotic systems. Nevertheless, the existing master-slave type of tele manipulators are limited in effectiveness by the human operator's limited sensory and manipulation capabilities. This paper presents the result of a research effort to resolve such problems by assigning the slave manipulator a certain degree of intelligence; sensing and actuation. In the presented system, a perception-action loop is achieved using ultrasonic range sensor and laser distance sensor interfaced with the PUMA 760 industrial robot system, and applied to automating impact wrenching task for unbolting the lid of nuclear spent fuel cask. The perception-action loop performs determination of the cask location, collision avoidance and centering of the impact wrench onto the bolt head. To aid the insertion task and to provide versatility a mounting module consisting of an RCC device and an automatic tool changer is designed and implemented. The performance of the developed system is tested on the model cask and the result is given.

  • This study develops a haptic display model which is an indispensable for the force generation in the virtual environment. In developing the haptic display model, a Proxy concept and a Karnopp friction model are utilized to generate the reaction force and the friction force. Also this study develops a 2 D.O.F. remote wiping system. This system is composed of a 2 D.O.F. master manipulator, a force sensor equipped 2 D.O.F. slave manipulator and a real time controller. With the developed remote wiping system, this study identifies the friction characteristic of the aluminum, acryl and rubber plate. The results are used as the dynamic friction coefficient of the haptic display model. This study shows the efficiency of the developed haptic display model by the comparison between the friction characteristic of the haptic display with the developed haptic display model and the friction characteristic of the real aluminum, acryl and rubber plate.

  • Remote handling manipulators are widely used for performing hazardous tasks, and it is essential to ensure the reliable performance of such systems. Toward this end, tendon-driven mechanisms are adopted in such systems to reduce the weight of the distal parts of the manipulator while maintaining the handling performance. In this study, several approaches for the design of a gripper system for a tendon-driven remote handling system are introduced. Basically, this gripper has an underactuated spring mechanism that is combined with a slave manipulator triggered by a master operator. Based on the requirements under the specified tendon-driven mechanism, the connecting position of the spring system on the gripper mechanism and kinematic influence coefficient (KIC) analysis are performed. As a result, a suitable combination of components for the proper design of the target system is presented and verified.

  • Since the heavy-duty power manipulator generally has high ratio gear reducers at its joints, its dynamic characteristics is much slower than that of the master manipulator and it is likely to encounter the saturation in the input magnitude when it is used as the slave manipulator in telemanipulation systems. This paper proposes a force reflecting and compliant control scheme for the heavy-duty power telemanipulator. The main advantage of the proposed scheme is that it provides a precise position and compliant control performance for a telemanipulator with control input saturation. The stability of the proposed scheme is analyzed and a series of experiments shows its performance.

  • A Force-refecting hand controller can provide the kinesthetic information obtained from a slave manipulator to the operator of a teleoperation system. This thesis presents the desgn and the analysis of a 6-degree-of-freedom force-reflecting hand controller using fivebar parallel mechanism. The goal of this thesis is to construct a superior hand controller that can provide large workspace and good force-reflecting ability. The forward kinematics of the fivebar paprallel mechanism has been calculated in real-time using three pin-joint sensors in addition to six actuator position sensors. A force decomposition approach is used to comput the Jacobin. To analyze the characteristics of the fivebar parallel mechanism, it has been compared with the other three parallel mechanisms in terms with workspace and manipulability measure. The force-reflecting hand controller using the fivebar parallel mechanism has been constructed and tested to verify the feasibility of the design concept.
