  • Skew is inevitably occurred in a scanned document image Thus, character recognition systems are generally very sensitive to a skew angle. In this paper, we propose a robust slant correction algorithm based on dithering and estimating vortical transition. Character strings are segmented by projecting the vertical transition point and the slant corrected image. The segmentation method using the vertical transition point can effectively split the character strings touching vertically each other. Experimental results show that the proposed method has achieved robust slant correction and good performance of character string segmentation.

  • General Hyperspectral Image Sensor acquires an image of line form such as a thin rectangle shape because of using 1D array Push Broom or Whisk Broom scanning method. A special mechanism is required for a Hyperspectral Image Sensor to operate for nadir and slant range. To design the mechanism, the characteristics of the flight motion and the overlap rate between consecutive frames were analyzed. Also, system requirements were proposed through modeling and simulation.

  • A slant correction method for handwritten Korean strings based on analysis of stroke distribution, which effectively reflects structural properties of Korean characters, is presented in this paper. The method aims to deal with typical problems which have been frequently observed in slant correction of handwritten Korean strings with conventional approaches developed for English/European languages. Extracted strokes from a line of text image are classified into two clusters by applying the K-means clustering. Gaussian modeling is applied to each of the clusters and the slant angle is estimated from the model which represents the vertical strokes. Experimental results support the effectiveness of the proposed method. For the performance comparison 1,300 handwritten address string images were used, and the results show that the proposed method has more superior performance than other conventional approaches.

  • Soil particles from rainfall flow into reservoir and give lots of influence in water quality because the geological conditions and landcover characteristics of Imdong watershed have a weakness against soil loss. Especially, reservoir slant is indicated by the main source area of soil loss. This study selected RUSLE model that could apply GIS and satellite image to evaluate the contribution rate of soil loss in reservoir slant. And we carried out an on-the-spot survey for the range, width and condition of reservoir slant that give much influences to the accuracy of soil loss. As the result of evaluation to the influence of soil loss in reservoir slant, it showed 2.64% in comparison with Imdong watershed. In view of these results, the influence of soil loss in reservoir slant was evaluated in low comparing with Imdong watershed relatively.

Abstract We propose the method that extracts eyes and mouth of human by analysing facial image sequences which can change their positions and orientations along the time. We propose the simplified Kalman filter to track the area of human face efficiently in image sequences. We also devise the method of slant-compensation, so that the facial components could be extracted more accurately by using vertical and horizontal profiles of the compensated images. Finally, we show the effectiveness of the suggested method through experimental results.

  • In this paper, we developed the profile analysis-based machine vision system for inspecting assembly parts in the industrial field. Implemented system composed of triple set of camera: one was used for acquiring slant image; other is required to acquire a top image; the other was used for side image. After obtaining parts which have gray scale image, threshold value was calculated by analyzing the profile of the image. Experimental results showed that proposed algorithm have a good performance for detecting fault parts and for classifying each parts as well.

  • In laser imaging, accurate extraction of the laser's center is essential. Several methods exist to extract the laser's center in an image, such as the geometric mean, the parabolic curve fitting, and the Gaussian curve fitting, etc. The Gaussian curve fitting is the most suitable because it is based on the physical properties of the laser. The width of the Gaussian laser beam depends on the distance from the laser source to the target object. It is assumed in general that the distance remains constant at a laser spot resulting in a symmetric Gaussian model for the laser image. However, on a curved surface of the object, the distance is not constant; The laser beam is narrower on the side closer to the focal point of the laser light and wider on the side closer to the laser source, which causes the distribution of the laser beam to skew. This study presents a modified Gaussian model in the laser imaging to incorporate the slant angle of a curved object. The proposed method is verified with simulation and experiments.

  • This paper presents an efficient method for estimationg and correcting the slant of off-line handwritten Hangul strings. In the proposed method, after extracting contours from input image.Hough tranform is applied to the contours to detect lines and estimate slants of the lines. When Hough trans form is applied to the contours, pixels which are not parts of the same stroke could be detected as a line.In order to exclude these lines from slant estimation process, detected lines which have the length less than threshold are eliminated.Experiments have been performed with address images which were extracted from live envelopes provided by Seoul Mail Center.Experimental results show that the proposed method is superior to the previous methods, which had been done with handwritten English strings.in estimation the slant of off-line handwritten Hangul strings.

  • In this paper, the difference in modulation transfer function (MTF) results according to the change in the angle of a slant target when measuring a presampled MTF was confirmed, and the difference was reduced by fitting the edge spread function graph obtained to reduce the error by the target's rotation. Due to the feature of the presampled MTF method, the spatial frequency changed due to the sensor's projected intensity being changed by the target's rotation, and it was confirmed that the difference in the MTF value occurred depending on the rotation angle of the target. In this paper, the MTF was calculated after fitting only one column of the acquired image. It was confirmed that the rotation error is smaller compared to the case of the presampled MTF method and this fitting method can be applied to a scene that contains various target angles, such as auto-focusing using the MTF.

  • The digital data were obtained using Kennedy 9000 magnetic tape deck which was connected to the SMS960 side scan sonar during the field operations. The data of three consecutive survey tracks near Seongsan-po, Cheju were used for the development of this study. The softwares were mainly written in Fortran-77 using VAX 11/780 MINI-COMPUTER (CPU Memory; 4MB). The established mapping system consists of the pretreatment and the digital processing of seafloor image data. The pretreatment was necessary because the raw digital data format of the field magnetic tapes was not compatible to the VAX system. Therefore the raw data were read by the personal computer using the Assembler language and the data format was converted to IBM compatible, and next data were communicated to the VAX system. The digital processing includes geometrical correction for slant range, statistical analysis and cartography of the seafloor image. The sound speed in the water column was assumed 1,500 m/sec for the slant range correction and the moving average method was used for the signal trace smoothing. Histograms and cumulative curves were established for the statistical analysis, that was purposed to classify the backscattering strength from the sea-bottom. The seafloor image was displayed on the color screen of the TEKTRONIX 4113B terminal. According to the brief interpretation of the result image map, rocky and sedimentary bottoms were very well discriminated. Also it was shown that the backscattered acoustic pressurecorrelateswith the grain size and sorting of surface sediments.
