Effect of the Slag Former on the Metal Melting and Radionuclides Distribution in an Electric Arc Furnace

  • The characteristics of the metal melting and radionuclide distribution of the radioactive has been investigated in a lab-scale arc furnace. The slag former based on the constituents of silica, calcium oxide, aluminum oxide, borate and calcium fluoride additions was used for melting of the stainless and carbon steel. In the melting of the stainless steel, the amount of slag formation increased with an increase of the concentration of the slag former. But the effects of the slag basicity on the amount of stag formation showed a local maximum value of the slag formation with an increase of the basicity index in the melting of the stainless steel as well as in the melting of the carbon steel. With an increase of the amount of slag former addition, the trends of the cobalt distribution into the ingot and the stag depended on the kind of slag former used in the melting of the stainless steel while the effect of the slag basicity on the distribution of the cobalt was not clarified in the melting of carbon steel. Tn the melting of the carbon steel, the strontium was captured at up to $50\%$ into the slag phase. Cesium was completely eliminated from the melt of the stainless steel as well as the carbon steel and distributed to the dust phase.

PARTITIONING RATIO OF DEPLETED URANIUM DURING A MELT DECONTAMINATION BY ARC MELTING

  • In a study of the optimum operational condition for a melting decontamination, the effects of the basicity, slag type and slag composition on the distribution of depleted uranium were investigated for radioactively contaminated metallic wastes of iron-based metals such as stainless steel (SUS 304L) in a direct current graphite arc furnace. Most of the depleted uranium was easily moved into the slag from the radioactive metal waste. The partitioning ratio of the depleted uranium was influenced by the amount of added slag former and the slag basicity. The composition of the slag former used to capture contaminants such as depleted uranium during the melt decontamination process generally consists of silica ($SiO_2$), calcium oxide (CaO) and aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$). Furthermore, calcium fluoride ($CaF_2$), magnesium oxide (MgO), and ferric oxide ($Fe_2O_3$) were added to increase the slag fluidity and oxidative potential. The partitioning ratio of the depleted uranium was increased as the amount of slag former was increased. Up to 97% of the depleted uranium was captured between the ingot phase and the slag phase. The partitioning ratio of the uranium was considerably dependent on the basicity and composition of the slag. The optimum condition for the removal of the depleted uranium was a basicity level of about 1.5. The partitioning ratio of uranium was high, exceeding $5.5{\times}10^3$. The slag formers containing calcium fluoride ($CaF_2$) and a high amount of silica proved to be more effective for a melt decontamination of stainless steel wastes contaminated with depleted uranium.

Material Characteristics of Smelting Slags Produced by Reproduction Experiment of Ancient Iron Smelting : According to Ca Content (고대 제철기술 복원실험에서 산출된 제련재의 칼슘함량에 따른 재료학적 특성)

  • In the ancient iron-making process, a slag former was often added so that iron and other minerals in the ore could be smoothly separated. However, there are insufficient data for judging whether a slag former was added. Thus, in this study, we conducted a smelting experiment to understand the material characteristics of a steel structure that differed depending on the addition of a slag former. It was found that the steel structure produced in the first experiment had a total Fe content of 39.45-52.94 wt%, which decreased to 34.89-38.92 wt% in the second and third experiments. CaO compounds such as calcite, gehlenite, and hercynite appeared, in addition to iron oxides, after the addition of a slag former. As a result of an assessment of whether a slag former was added by comparing the ratio between the components, it was found that the ratio of $CaO/SiO_2$ was 0.42. From a comparative analysis of $Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ and $CaO/SiO_2$, it was judged that the ratio of $Al_2O_3$ and $SiO_2$ can be utilized as an index to judge similar systems of smelting process (ore, furnace wall, and fuel).

  • Converter slag has some compositional similarities to portland cement. But it has no hydration properties due to it's quite high concentrations of FeO(20-35%), MnO(4-6.5%). So it is needed to reduce the concentrations of iron and manganese of converter slag to use as cement additives by enhancing it's hydration properties. In this study, converter slag was modified it's composition by mixing of silica, alumina and quenched BF slag and reduced in induction furnace and quenched in running water. The hydraulic properties and structures of modified and quenched converter slag are significantly changed depend on the amount and kinds of additives. The addition of alumina up to 10% and BFQ slag up to 20% by weight on converter slag was effective to enhance the hydraulic properties of modified and quenched slag. The addition of reduced and quenched converter slag up to 20% by weight in replacement of portland cement in mixing of concrete mortar were shown higher compressive strength than 100% cement concrete mortar.

Study on the Iron Production Process through the Analysis of By-Products Found at Jiǔdiàn Iron Production Site, China

  • $Ji{\check{u}}di{\grave{a}}n$ iron production site in China is a relic smelting site, which in the past produced pig iron. In this study, scientific analysis of the smelting furnace and collected slag was conducted to reveal some aspects of the ancient Chinese smelting technique. A 3D model of the smelting furnace showed a narrow lower part and an upper section which increased in diameter upwards. Although the smelting furnace relic does not include the upper part and its complete shape cannot be predicted, the remaining part suggests that the furnace had a larger diameter in the central part compared to the upper and lower parts. Most of the collected slag was completely vitrified. Long prismatic fayalite was observed in the matrix of some samples. The iron particles contained phosphorus, which could not be discharged during smelting work. In addition, as the $CaO/SiO_2$ ratio was 0.42 or lower in the results of the content analysis, no CaO slag former had been added. However, the ratio of $CaO/SiO_2$ to $Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ did not have a constant trend. This needs to be investigated in a further study.

  • LF slag is formed by EAF carryover slag and slag former(such as lime, dolomite) put into the ladle during the tapping molten metal. After LF process, continuous casting is started when molten steel is sent from ladle to tundish through bottom nozzle of ladle. Conventionally, remained molten slag and steel in ladle are poured into a slag port and they are transferred to a slag yard and then recycled. In this study, we investigated about recycling of molten LF slag residue(including Fe residue to reuse) which is made in steelmaking process. As a result, lime usage was decreased about 2.2~3.2 kg/steel-ton and also molten steel yield rate was increased about 0.3 ~ 0.5 percent point.

  • A fundamental study on the melt decontamination of metal wastes generated by dismantling the nuclear facility, the melting of metal wastes such as stainless steel and carbon steel have been carried out to investigate the distribution phenomena of the radioisotopes such as $^{60}Co$ and $^{137}Cs$ into the ingot, slag and dust phases by using the various slag types, slag concentration and basicity in an arc furnace. The $^{60}Co$ remained homogeneously in the ingot phase above 90 % and it was barely present in the slag below 10 %. The effect of the slag composition on the distribution for Co-60 was not considerable, but a basic slag former with high fluidity showed effective. $^{137}Cs$ was completely eliminated from the melt of the stainless steel as well as the carbon steel and distributed to the slag and the dust phase.

  • The aim of the research is to analyze the feasibility of rapid quality evaluation method for blast furnace slag using hydrometer based on the former research of the prediction method for concrete compressive strength using hydrometer. Using this method, it is expected to provide a new application for blast furnace slag quality evaluation easily and rapidly during the receiving inspection. According to the experimental results, the settling time period of hydrometer was delayed with increased fineness of blast furnace slag. By using the regression equation of y = 198 120 x - 193 936(R=0.9398) obtained from the correlation between density of suspension at three minutes and fineness, it was possible to evaluate the quality of blast furnace slag fineness rapidly. Therefore, for ready-mixed concrete receiving inspection, the suggested method can be used as a cheap, a simple, and a rapid inspection method.

Analysis of Iron Production Technology of Army against Japanese through Slag from Saengsoegol Iron Production Site

  • Slag was collected from the iron-producing furnace site in Saengsoegol, Baegun mountain, where iron was manufactured by a righteous army against Japan in the Gwangyang region; then, the iron-manufacturing technique of the early modern period was investigated through scientific analysis. In the microstructure analysis results of the selected samples, iron bloom was mainly observed together with magnetite and fayalite. In the component analysis results of the compounds, it was confirmed that the furnace was built by using gangue of alkali feldspar or plagioclase series, and the ironmaking work was performed at a high temperature of at least 1050℃, because mullite was identified together with cristobalite and hercynite. Based on the chemical composition, it was speculated that low-grade iron ores were used as raw materials, and it seemed that the yield was low, because the total Fe content of the smelting slag samples was 37.72-49.93%. It was difficult to confirm whether a slag former was used, and it seemed that materials easily obtained nearby were used when the furnace was built, without considering the corrosion resistance. It appeared that the ironmaking work was performed at the Gwangyang Saengsoegol iron-producing furnace based on the direct ironmaking method in an environment that could escape the vigilance of the Japanese Empire to produce weapons that would be used for the resistance against Japan. It seemed that there was neither an advanced ironware production system nor a mass production system, and small-scale works were performed in short periods of time.

A study on the Utilization of the Domestic Low-Grade Talc In Ceramic Industry (Tremolitic Talc-Slag-Clay System) (요업공업에 있어서 국산저질골석의 이용에 관한 연구 (투각섬석질 골석-슬라그-점토계))

  • In our former paper, tremolitic talc, -wollastonite-clay system was studied. In this study blast furnace slag was used(B.F.S.) instead of wollastonite for developing a fast-firing wall tile body. The wall tile bodies consisting of tremolitic talc and B.F.S. asmajor constituents have been fired in the temperature range 1000-120$0^{\circ}C$. Some of these bodies have showed good properties for wall tile manufacture. According to the increased content of B.F.S the fired bodies have showed the decreased thermal expansion which was resulted from the fact that the amounts of diopside and anorthite were gradually increased and those of quartz relatively decreased. Being reasonable in low price and thermo-stable properties tremolitic talc and B.F.S. will be good materials for the fast-firing tile body.
