  • The Korea has significant tidal current energy resources, but it is so hard to work underwater for tidal turbine installation. Therefore commercial diving work is very important for tidal current generator. Also, Jangjuk channel is vary famous as proper area to generate tidal current energy. Nevertheless, no one is studied about characteristics of commercial diving works with installation of tidal current generator. The purpose of this study is to introduce commercial diving with work types and investigate critical limits of diving working under the conditions, which are working only to minutes at slack tide during the neap tide. As the results, work types are five as like mooring installation, OMAS(Offshore Maintenance Access System), support structure installation, cable and turbine installation. Here, the original construction period is expected about 4 months, but the construction take 18 months to complete. The cause of extends construction period is insufficiency of researching tidal current conditions at the site and ignorance of slack tide which need to secure diving working time. Total diving working times are 110th during 18 months, the highest percentage of diving times is turbine installation about 43.6 %, and cable, mooring installation and support structure construction are 27.3 %, 15.5 %, 13.6 %, respectively. On the basis of this study, estimation of times of commercial diving is possible with work types of tidal current power, and has a significance as basic data to determining construction period.

  • The flow pattern and water mass structure in the Chungmu channel were investigated using the field observations during June and July, 2001. The currents in the channel may be regarded as a hydraulic current decided by difference of tide levels between two sides in the channel. The strongest current in the channel occurs around in high water and low water. The coefficient C to be determined the characteristics of velocity in the channel was obtained from an equation, $u=C{\sqrt{2gh}}$ and ranges from 0.37 to 0.65 in the Chungmu Channel at the spring tide and from 0.23 to 0.37 at the neap tide. Eastward tidal transport is usually larger than that of westward transport in Chungmu the Channel. Sea water exchange rates are 39.2% in spring tide and 20.5% in neap tide respectively. The water mass structure in the channel is changed by the speed of the tidal current. The water mass is well mixed at the high water when the current is strong and is stratified at slack water when the current is weak.

  • Simultaneous tidal current observation at five or seven stations on the channel near Incheon Habour was conducted at neap, mean and spring tides during the period of August 16 to August 27, 1976 and the characteristic of tidal currents with each tide was studied by the analysis of these data. Times of slack refer to the times of high and low waters at neap, mean and spring tides seem to be small. Times of maximum current refer to the times of high and low waters at the mean tide tends to appear earlier than that of the neap tide and later than that of the spring tide. The velocity ratio of maximum ebb current to maximum flood current at the mean tide has larger value than that of neap tide and has smaller value than that of spring tide. The current velocity ratio of spring tide to neap tide and to mean tide are approximately 1.8 and 1.3, respectively.

  • Seasonal variations of chemical constituents of estuarine water at a definite station of the tidal flat in Guang Yang inlet have been determined for two days a month. The range and mean of the annual variations are as follows:Tidal variations through a year are as follows:1. Although the tidal value of pH is almost constant during one tidal cycle, it raises abruptly 0.1-0.2 intervals of pH value during the first period of flood.2. The lower values of chlorinity, magnesium and calcium contents have been determined the nearer the slack after ebb, and slightly higher during the first period of flood tide than the last of ebb. The tidal change of calcium contents is more remarkable than of magnesium.3. The higher per cent saturation values of dissolved oxygen, sometimes higher than 100 per cent, re determined the nearer the slack after ebb.4. The total nitrogen contents, relatively poor, varies accidentally during one tidal cycle, whereas phosphate-P and silicate-Si are rich at the slack after ebb and increase proportionally to the mixing percentage of fresh water. The average values, 52.2 and 18.5 of Si/P and N/P are greater than of the normal.5. The acid soluble iron contents, lower in winter than in summer, is also varies accidentally during one tidal cycle and the magnitude of the variation is large.6. The chemical composition considered from the value of Ca/Cl or Mg/Cl of estuarine water varies according to the chlorinity even at the high chlorinity of 18-19%.

  • A series of echo-sounding and current measurements as well as the drogue and the drift bottle experiments were carried out in Asan Bay since November 1974. Several sand bars or sand flats covered by silts were developed at ebb tide in the bay. Sand waves and sand ripples were seen on the surface of the sand bars, around which sea channels of 8~ 12 meters in depth are formed. The main stream axis of the flood current which is separated into east and west branch flows southward. A cyclonic and an anticyclonic eddy are developed at the early stage of flood tide. They are transformed into a clockwise eddy before the slack water. The maximum tidal current speed observed was 3.1 ~ 3.2 knots at the entrance of the bay, while it was 1.O ~ 2.8 knots in the bay. The location of the main stream axis of the tidal current coincides well with the sea channel. A salt wedge was observed at the estuary of the Sabgyo-cheon River.

  • Slack-tide sampling was carried out at 6 stations at high and low tide for a tidal cycle during spring tide of the early summer (June) and summer (July, August) of 2016 to determine the difference of water quality according to tide in Masan Bay, Korea. The mixing regime of all the water quality components investigated was well explained through the correlation with SAL. In the early summer and summer, TURB, DSi and NNN which mainly flow into the bay from the streams and SS, COD, AMN and $H_2S$ which mainly indicate the internal sink and source materials have a property of conservative mixing and non-conservative mixing, respectively. The conservative mixing showed a good linear relationship of the water quality between high and low tide, and the non-conservative mixing showed a variation of different pattern each other. Factor analysis performed on the concentration difference data sets between high and low tide helped in identifying the principal latent variables for them. In early summer, multiple effects (tidal action, natural influx and internal sinks and sources etc.) acted in combination for the differences to be distributed evenly in four factors (VF1~4), since there were few allochthonous inputs as a low-water season. On the contrary, in summer, the parameters showing large concentration difference at ST-1 affected by stream water were concentrated in one factor (VF1) and clearly distinguished from the parameters affected by the internal sinks and sources. In fact, there is no estuary (bay) that always maintains steady state flow conditions. The mixing regime of an estuary might be changed at any time due to the change of flushing time, and furthermore the change of end-member conditions due to the internal sinks and sources makes the occurrence of concentration difference inevitable. Therefore, when investigating the water quality of the estuary, it is necessary to take a sampling method considering the tide to obtain average water quality data.

  • Miraculous victory of Myeongnyang sea battle turned the tide of the Joseon's entire war against Japan and it is regarded as one of the most remarkable sea victories in the world history. In the sea battle of Myeongnyang, on September 16, 1597(lunar calender), the Joseon navy with 13 battle ships, led by Admiral Yi Sun-sin, won the Japanese navy with their fleet of 133 warships. There were several reasons why Admiral Yi decided on this location for battle. Myeongnyang strait is so narrow and had currents so powerful that many ships could not pass strait simultaneously. Therefore, despite being vastly outnumbered, Admiral Yi used terrain and tidal current advantage to defeat Japanese navy's numerical advantage. In order to find out the tidal state of Myeongnyang strait on September 16, 1597, topological phase of sun and moon was studied by orbital period of earth and moon. The tidal state of Myeongnyang strait on September 16, 1597 is estimated based on the theories of tide and tide tables. As a result of this study, time of slack water were found to be 0636, 1248, 1906 and time/speed of maximum tidal current were found to be 0930/8.3kts(NW), 1612/9.9kts(SE).

  • A study of estuarine flows during a neap tide was performed using 13-hour roving acoustic Doppler current profiles (ADCP) and conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) profiles in the Altamaha River estuary, Georgia, U.S.A. The least-squared harmonic analysis method was used to fit the tidal ($M_2$) component and separate the flow into two components: the tidal and residual ($M_2$-removed) flows. We applied this method to depth-averaged data. Results show that the $M_2$ component demonstrates over 95% of the variability of observation data. As the flow was dominated by the $M_2$ tidal component in a narrow channel, the tidal ellipse distribution was essentially a back-and-forth motion. The amplitude of $M_2$ velocity component increased slightly from the river mouth (0.45 m/sec) to land (0.6 m/sec) and the phase showed fairly constant values in the center of the channel and rapidly decreasing values near the northern and southern shoaling areas. The residual flow and transport calculated from depth-averaged flow shows temporal variability over the tidal time scale. Strong landward flows appeared during slack waters which may be attributed to increased baroclinic forcing when turbulent mixing decreases.

  • An analysis of potential flooding by storm surge and wave run-up and overtopping can be used to evaluate protection afforded by the existing storm protection system. The analysis procedure can also be used to evaluate various protection alternatives for providing typhoon flood protection. To determine risk, the storm surges for both historical and hypothetical are compiled with tide conditions to represent high, slack and low water for neap, spring and mid range tides to use with the statistical procedure known as the Empirical Simulations Technique (EST). The EST uses the historic and hypothetical events to generate a large population of life-cycle databases that are used to compute mean value maximum storm surge elevation frequency relationships. The frequency-of-occurrence relationship is determined for all relevant locations along the shoreline at appropriate locations to identify the effect using the Empirical Storm Simulation (EST). To assist with understanding the process, an example is presented for a study of storm surge analysis for Freeport, Texas. This location is in the Gulf of Mexico and is subject to hurricanes and other tropical storms that approach from the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Han River estuary (HRE) is located at the middle of the western coast of Korea, and tidal currents were measured at 4 stations in this estuary during the winter season, and previously observed tide data was analyzed. The results of amplitude ratio of $M_4/M_2$ showed that increasing upward to estuary in the HRE. Tide harmonic constants of relative phase $2M_2-M_4$ represent flood dominance, with under 180 degree. But this method has a limit of analysis that typically based on the non-linear distortion of the tidal current in tidal lagoon system where freshwater discharge is assumed to be relatively small. The results of statistically tidal current data indicated that ebb current velocity would be great unlike tide data. Ebb and flood duration time is calculated by slack time of tidal current showed that ebb duration time is longer than flood. The results of correlation of analysis show high value (0.9) between tidal current stations from Incheon harbor to north entrance of Yeomha channel. We reconstructed to find the reasons for the features of ebb dominance the results of harmonic analysis. As major component ($M_2$) in combination with shallow water component ($M_4$), the tidal curve was presented flood dominance that has a flood current is stronger. However, these curve were changed to ebb dominance add up the non-harmonic components that had ebb direction flow by calculated tidally averaged current. The characteristic of enhancement on ebb is showed around the Yeomha channel in the HRE, because averaged flow which acts seaward such as long-term tidal current components due to non-linear effect and freshwater which overcome the flood current.
