The limit equilibrium method (LEM) is commonly used for slope design and stability analysis because it is easy to simulate slope and requires short calculating time. However, LEM cannot adequately simulate ploughing failure in a footwall slope with a joint set dipping parallel with slope, e.g. bedding joint set. This study performed parametric study to analyze the influence factors on ploughing failure using UDEC which is a commercial two-dimensional DEM (Distinct Element Method)-based numerical program. The influence of joint structure and properties on stability of a footwall slope against ploughing failure was investigated, and the factor of safety was estimated using the shear strength reduction method. It was found that the stability of footwall slope against ploughing failure strongly relies on dip angle of conjugate joint, and the critical bedding joint spacing and the critical length of slab triggering ploughing failure are also affected by dip angle of conjugate joint. The results obtained from this study can be used for effective slope design and construction including reinforcement.
The Paved Track is applied to reduce maintenance cost of conventional line. The Paved Track could be used in all types of lines including earthwork, bridge, tunnel and turnout sections. In case of earthwork section, the construction joint is the most critical factor to track durability. The construction joint does not affect to the track structure directly, but the gap due to discontinuity of slabs may affect to the long-term serviceability. To evaluate this problem, the accelerated track test has been performed on the construction joint and the middle part to of the real scale Paved Track. The purpose of this test is that evaluate the vulnerability of construction joint section comparing the trends of settlement and earth pressure under repeated loads of construction joint with those of the middle slab part.

ACI318-89 Recommended that when the specified compressive strength of concrete in a column is greater than1.4 times that specified for a floor system, top surface of the column concrete shall extend 2ft(600mm)into the slab from the face of column to avoid unexpected brittle failure. The major variables are extension distance, flexural strength ratio(Mr), and shear reinforcement ratio(Vs). Test results are as follows ; (1) The failure modes of specimens under cyclic loading were concentrated at critical region from beam-column joint face. (2) Ductility index($\mu$f) were increased with increasing of shear confinement ratio and flexural strength ratio. (3)The specimens with 2ft extension distance showed more ductility than the specimens with 1ft extension distance.
As bridge conditions in the United States continue to deteriorate, rapid bridge replacement procedures are needed. Decked precast prestressed concrete (DPPC) girders are used for rapid bridge construction because the bridge deck is precast with the girders eliminating the need for a cast-in-place slab. One of the concerns with using DPPC girders as a bridge construction option is the durability of the longitudinal joints between girders. The objectives of this paper were to propose a method to use a spring element modeling procedure for representing welded steel connector assemblies between adjacent girders in DPPC girder bridges, perform a preliminary study of bridge performance under multiple loading scenarios and bridge configurations, and discuss model flexibility for accommodating future field data for model verification. The spring elements have potential to represent the contribution of joint grout materials by altering the spring stiffness.

ACI318-89 Recommened that when the specified compressive strength of concrete in a column is greater than 1.4 times that specified for a floor system, top surface of the column concrete shall extend 2ft (600mm) into the slab from the face of column to avoid unexpected brittle failure. The major variables are extension distance, compressive strength of concrete (f'c), shear confinement ratio(Vs), and loading types. The test results showed that the load capacity of the specimen subjected to monotonic loading had more than that of the specimen subjected to one way cyclic loadings. The failure models of specimens under cyclic loading were concentrated at 5∼20cm apart region from beam-column joint face. Ducility index(μf) are increased with increasing of shear confinement ratio. The specimen with 2ft extension distance shows more ductility than specimen with lft extension distance.

This paper provides the engineer with a simple design method dealing with situations arise where in-situ reinforced concrete joints are cast between hollow core units. Using finite element method, hollow core slabs with wide in-situ RC joints under point load and line loads are analysed. In addition, some important behavioural characteristics of the floor slab subjected to line and point loads are investigated. In-situ reinforced concrete joint causes reduction of load distribution for remote units because distance to the remote units from the point of load is increased, while the portion of load distribution carried by loaded unit increases. Also, it was turned out load distribution factors for point load and line loads are almost same. Finally, we suggest a simple analytical method, which can determine load distribution factors using normalized deflections by regression analysis for design purposes.

The thermal bridge occurring in a building influences its thermal performance and durability. The domestic typical multi-unit residential buildings suffer thermal losses resulting from thermal bridges of the balcony slab. To minimize the thermal loss between inside and outside of the balcony slab, thermal bridge breaker(TBB) systems have been developed and applied in building construction. Although thermal bridge breaker systems for reinforced concrete(RC) wall-slab joints can improve the thermal performance of a building, it is necessary to verify the structural performance of TBB systems whether they provide proper resistance for cyclic loading. In order to investigate the structural characteristics of TBB systems embedded in RC slabs, cyclic tests of wall-slab joints were performed by applying two reversed cycles at each up to 30 cycles. The test results show that the RC slabs embedding TBBS systems can present excellent structural performance and the maximum moment capacity, energy dissipation capacity and ductility of TBBs systems are enhanced compared to those of the typical RC slabs.
In order to study the fire resistance of castellated composite beams with ortho-hexagonal holes and different beam-end restraints, temperature rise tests with constant load were conducted on full-scale castellated composite beams with ortho-hexagonal holes and hinge or rigid joint constraints to investigate the temperature distribution, displacement changes and failure patterns of castellated composite beams with two different beam-end constraints during the whole course of fire. The results show that (1) During the fire, the axial pressure and horizontal expansion deformation generated in the rigid joint constrained composite beam were larger than those in the hinge joint constrained castellated composite beam, and their maximum horizontal expansion displacements were 30.2 mm and 17.8 mm, respectively. (2) After the fire, the cracks on the slab surface of the castellated composite beam with rigid joint constraint were more complicated than hinge restraint, and the failure more serious; the lower flange and web at the ends of the castellated steal beams with hinge and rigid joint constraint produced serious local buckling, and the angles of the ortho-hexagonal holes at the support cracked; the welds at both ends of the castellated composite beam with rigid joint constraint cracked. (3) Based on the simplified calculation method of solid-web composite beam, considering the effect of holes on the web, this paper calculated the axial force and displacement of the beam-end constrained castellated composite beams under fire. The calculation results agreed well with the test results.

Joint opening of jointed concrete pavement is caused by change in temperature and humidity of adjoined slab. The magnitude of joint opening influences on the load-transfer-efficiency and the behavior of sealant. If temperature or humidity decreases, joint opening increases. Generally maximum joint opening of a given joint is predicted by using AASHTO equation. While different magnitudes of joint opening at the individual joints have been observed in a given pavement section, AASHTO equation is limited to predict average joint opening in a given pavement section. Therefore the AASHTO equation may underestimate maximum joint for the half of joint in a given pavement section. Joints showing larger opening than the designed may experience early joint sealant failure, early faulting. Also unexpected spalling may be followed due to invasion of fine aggregate into the joints after sealant pop-off. In this study, the variation of the joint opening in a given pavement section was investigated based on the LTPP SMP data. Factors affecting on the variation are explored. Finally a probabilistic joint opening model is developed. This model can account for the reliability of the magnitude of joint opening so that the designer can select the ratio of underestimated joint opening.
PURPOSES: The objective of this study is to evaluate construction issues and design for transverse steel in continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP). METHODS : The first continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP) design procedure appeared in the 1972 edition of the "AASHTO Interim Guide for Design of Pavement Structures", which was published in 1981 with Chapter 3 "Guide for the Design of Rigid Pavement" revised. A theory that was accepted at that time for the analysis of steel stress in concrete pavement, called subgrade drag theory(SGDT), was utilized for the design of reinforcement of CRCP - tie bar design and transverse steel design - in the aforementioned AASHTO Interim Guide. However SGDT has severe limitations due to simple assumptions made in the development of the theory. As a result, any design procedures for reinforcement utilizing SGDT may have intrinsic flaws and limitations. In this paper, CRCP design procedure for transverse steel was introduced and the limitations of assumptions for SGDT were evaluated based on various field testing. RESULTS: Various field tests were conducted to evaluate whether the assumptions of SGDT are reasonable or not. Test results show that 1) temperature variations exist along the concrete slab depth, 2) very little stress in transverse steel, and 3) warping and curling in concrete slab from the field test results. As a result, it is clearly revealed out that the assumptions of SGDT are not valid, and transverse steel and tie bar designs should be based on more reasonable theories. CONCLUSIONS : Since longitudinal joint is provided at 4.1-m spacing in Korea, as long as joint saw-cut is made in accordance with specification requirements, the probability of full-depth longitudinal cracking is extremely small. Hence, for transverse steel, the design should be based on the premise that its function is to keep the longitudinal steel at the correct locations. If longitudinal steel can be placed at the correct locations within tolerance limits, transverse steel is no longer needed.
