Deformations of bridge deck ends on abutment can cause extreme deformations on track. Especially, since slab track was fixed onto the bridge deck slab on concrete slab track installed bridges, deformations of bridge deck ends directly affect the slab track behavior, and thus these interactions can bring about the premature failure of rail fastenings or other deteriorations to lower the serviceability. In this study, a foreign standard to evaluate forces on track components caused by the track-bridge interactions and the behavior of bridge deck ends was investigated and for real scale bridges. It was found that rail support spring coefficients, as well as toe loads, support spacing were very important parameters.
Deformations of bridge deck ends on abutments or on transition between bridge decks can cause extreme deformations on track. Especially, since slab track is fixed onto the bridge deck slab on concrete slab track-installed bridges, deformations of bridge deck ends directly affect the track behavior, and thus these interactions can bring about the premature failure of rail fastenings or other deteriorations to lower the serviceability. In this study, a foreign standard to evaluate forces on track components caused by the track-bridge interactions and the serviceability of bridge deck ends is investigated, and for the real bridges, the serviceability of bridge deck ends according to several parameters of bridge and track is analyzed. It is found that arrangements and spring coefficients of bridge bearings, as well as distance between bridge bearing and last rail support, support spacings, rail support spring coefficient, are very important parameters.

This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of the curling behavior of long-span pavement slabs under environmental loads. By developing and using finite element models of the long-span pavement slabs, the stress distribution and the effects of slab length, slab thickness, stiffness of underlying layers, and the restraints of the slab ends on the curling behavior were analyzed. In addition, the field experiments were performed with the actual long-span pavement slab to obtain the curling behavior of the real structure under environmental loads. As a result of this study, it was found that the vertical displacements of the long-span pavement slab along the centerline due to the curling behavior were zero except for the areas near the slab ends, and the curling stresses were maximum and constant where the displacements were zero. The slab length and the stiffness of underlying layers did not affect the maximum curling stresses. The restraints at the slab ends made the curling stresses occur near the slab ends, but did not much affect the maximum curling stresses.

The section of double-tee is considered as one of the most efficient type for flexure. However, the depth of it is bigger then that of other slab systems. The story height of it is also increased because the duct space is required under the double tee in addition to their net depth. Thus, a new modified double-tees with the nib length of 1.58m was suggested in this study. The story height of this one is reduced up to 450mm by including duct space under the nib at the ends of slab. The four ends of the modified two single tees were designed by strut-tie models. Shear tests were performed on them to verify the safety. The ultimate shear strengths of non-prestressed two specimens were larger than the design shear strength by strut-tie models. They were failed in ductile with many distributed flexural crackings. However, the other prestressed two specimens showed much stiffer behaviors, less deflection. and strength than those of prestressed.

The increasement in the floor hight may be one of the most significant problem in the use of precast concrete double slab in the multi-story buildings. The modified double-tees including duct space at the ends of slab were considered in this study. The length and thickness of nib of modified double tee was increased to receive the uniform reaction from rectangular beam, while the original PCI dapped one to receive the point load from inverted tee beam to the leg of double tee. Shear tests were performed on the ends of the modified double tees which were designed by strut-tie model. The modified double tees generally show more ductile flexural failure in the long thickened nib. It is concluded that they show superior failure patterns than that of original dapped one with shear failure.

Recently, with increasing social interests on noise and vibration induced by railway traffic, the application of floating slab track that can efficiently reduce the railway vibration is increasing. In this study, to more accurately understand the dynamic behavior of the floating slab track, a laboratory mock-up test has been performed, and the static and dynamic behaviors at frequency range near the system resonance frequency were explored. Based on the test results, the design of the floating slab track and the structural analysis model used in the design have been verified. The analytic and test results demonstrate that the dominant frequency of the floating slab track occurs at the frequencies between vertical rigid body mode natural frequency and bending mode natural frequency, and the dominant deformation mode is close to the bending mode. This suggests that in the design of the floating slab track, the bending rigidity of the slab and the boundary conditions at slab joints and slab ends should be taken into consideration. Also, the analytic results by the two-dimensional finite element analysis model using Kelvin-Voigt model, such as static and dynamic deflections and force transmissibility, are found in good agreement with the test results, and thus the model used in this study has shown the reliability suitable to be utilized in the design of the floating slab track.
In this article, we consider an unbounded minimal graph $M{\subset}R^3$ which is contained in a slab. Assume that ${\partial}M$ consists of two Jordan curves lying in parallel planes, which is symmetric with the reflection under a plane. If the asymptotic behavior of M is also symmetric in some sense, then we prove that the minimal graph is itself symmetric along the same plane.
The composite reinforced concrete and steel (RCS) structural systems have larger structural lateral stiffness, higher inherent structural damping, and faster construction speed than either traditional reinforcement concrete or steel structures. In this paper, four RCS subassemblies with or without the RC slab designed following a strong column-weak beam philosophy were constructed and tested under reversed-cyclic loading. Parameters including the width of slab and composite effect of the RC slab and beam were explored. The test results showed that all specimens performed in a ductile manner with plastic hinges formed in the beam ends near the column faces. The seismic responses of composite connections are influenced significantly by different width of slabs. Compared with that of the steel beam without the RC slab, it was found that the load carrying capacity of composite connections with the RC slab increased by 30% on average, and strength degradation, energy dissipation also had better performance, while the ductility of that were almost the same. Furthermore, the contribution of connection deformation to the overall specimen displacement was analyzed and compared. It decreased approximately 10% due to the coupling effect in the columns and beams with the RC slab. Based on the test result, some suggestions are presented for the design of composite RCS joints.

Deformations of bridge deck ends on abutments and piers bring about severe problems in track geometry and require maintenance work. In case of concrete slab track, more severe deformation and additional forces on rail and rail supports can be induced by bridge deck deformation, which affect the serviceability of track structure since concrete slab track is much stiffer than ballasted track and the behavior of track structure is integrated with that of bridge deck. In this study, the design variables affecting the serviceability of track structure are selected and the influence level is estimated by a parametric study. As a result, it is found that continuous span is advantageous than simply supported span and the stiffness of bridge bearing and rail fastener as well as the distance between last rail support and bridge bearing are most important parameters.
We have developed a slab-type Nd:YAG gain module based on the techniques of conduction cooling and end pumping. The Nd:YAG slab is end-capped on both ends by undoped pure YAG and is pumped through the end-caps by stacked arrays of laser diode bars. The slab's surfaces of total internal reflection are in contact on both sides with microchannel cooling blocks which are cooled by water circulation. The power oscillator based on the gain module generates more than 400 W at 1-kW pumping with a slope efficiency of 55%. The small-signal gain of the gain module is 10 in a single zig-zag pass, and the amplified beam shows a near diffraction-limited beam quality.
