We investigate the constraints on the matter density ${\Omega}m$ and the cosmological constant ${\Omega}{\Lambda}$ using the gravitational lensed QSO (Quasi Stellar Object) systems from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) by analyzing the distribution of image separation. The main sample consists of 16 QSO lens systems with measured source and lens redshifts. We use a lensing probability that is simply defined by the gaussian distribution. We perform the curvature test and the constraints on the cosmological parameters as the statistical tests. The statistical tests have considered well-defined selection effects and adopt parameter of velocity dispersion function. We also applied the same analysis to Monte-Carlo generated mock gravitational lens samples to assess the accuracy and limit of our approach. As the results of these statistical tests, we find that only the excessively positively curved universe (${\Omega}m+{\Omega}{\Lambda}$ > 1) are rejected at 95% confidence level. However, if the informations of the galaxy as play a lens are measured accurately, we confirm that the gravitational lensing statistics would be the most powerful tool.
Halo coronal mass ejections (HCMEs) are major cause of the geomagnetic storms. To minimize the projection effect by coronagraph observations, we consider two CME cone models: an ice-cream cone model and an asymmetric cone model. These models allow us to determine three dimensional parameters of HCMEs such as radial speed, angular width, and the angle between sky plane and cone axis. In this study, we compare these parameters obtained from both models using 50 well-observed HCMEs from 2001 to 2002. Then we obtain the root mean square error (RMS error) between measured projection speeds and estimated ones for the models. As a result, we find that the radial speeds obtained from the models are well correlated with each other (R=0.89), and the correlation coefficient of angular width is 0.68. The correlation coefficient of the angle between sky plane and cone axis is 0.42, which is much smaller than what is expected. The reason may be due to the fact that the source locations of the asymmetric cone model are assumed to be near the center. The average RMS error of the asymmetric cone model (86.2km/s) is slightly smaller than that of the ice-cream cone model (88.6km/s).

High resolution intertidal DEM is a basic material for science research like sedimentation/erosion by ocean current, and is invaluable in a monitoring of environmental changes and practical management of coastal wetland. Since the intertidal zone changes rapidly by the inflow of fluvial debris and tide condition, remote sensing is an effective tool for observing large areas in short time. Although radar interferometry is one of the well-known techniques for generating high resolution DEM, conventional repeat-pass interferometry has difficulty on acquiring enough coherence over tidal flat due to the limited exposure time and the rapid changes in surface condition. In order to overcome these constraints, we tested the feasibility of radar interferometry using Cosmo-SkyMed tandem-like one-day data and ERS-ENVISAT cross tandem data with very short revisit period compared to the conventional repeat pass data. Small temporal baseline combined with long perpendicular baseline allowed high coherence over most of the exposed tidal flat surface in both observations. However the interferometric phases acquired from Cosmo-SkyMed data suffer from atmospheric delay and changes in soil moisture contents. The ERS-ENVISAT pair, on the other hand, provides nice phase which agree well with the real topography, because the atmospheric effect in 30-minute gap is almost same to both images so that they are cancelled out in the interferometric process. Thus, the cross interferometry with very small temporal baseline and large perpendicular baseline is one of the most reliable solutions for the intertidal DEM construction which requires very accurate mapping of the elevation.

External shading devices are well known solar control devices that can help reduce the cooling load of commercial buildings. For this study, experiments were conducted to examine the feasibility of shading devices in reducing both the cooling and heating loads. The influence of sky radiant cooling during winter was verified for the external shading device, internal roller blind, and window. Results can be summarized as follows. The temperature difference between the inner and outer surfaces of the window with the external shading device was 11.8℃ compared to 14.6℃ for one without the external shading device. This 2.8℃ difference was due to heat exchange by sky radiation when the surface temperature of the shading device was lower than the ambient outdoor air temperature. The roller blind resulted in a lower temperature of 0.8℃ compared to the average temperature of the window's air cavity. This was due to heat exchange by sky radiation of the roller blind surfaces. Without shading devices, the outside surface temperature of the window is about 3℃ higher. The study also found that when external shading devices were installed on both the southwest and southeast sides, the outside surface temperature of the windows were lower on the southwest side than the southeast side.
We compare insolation results calculated from two well-known empirical formulas (Socket and Beaudry's SB73 formula and the original Smithsonian (SMS) formula) and a radiative transfer model using input data predicted from meteorological weather-forecast models, and review the accuracy of each method. Comparison of annual mean daily irradiance values for clear-sky conditions between the two formulas shows that, relative to the SMS, the SB73 underestimates spring values by 9 W $m^{-2}$ in the northern Adriatic Sea, although overall there is a good agreement between the annual results calculated with the two formulas. We also elucidate the effect on SMS of changing the 'Sun-Earth distance factor (f)', a parameter which is commonly assumed to be constant in the oceanographic context. Results show that the mean daily solar radiation for clear-sky conditions in the northern Adriatic Sea can be reduced as much as 12 W $m^{-2}$ during summer due to a decrease in the f value. Lastly, surface irradiance values calculated from a simple radiative transfer model (GM02) for clear-sky conditions are compared to those from SB73 and SMS. Comparison with iu situ data in the northern Adriatic Sea shows that the GM02 estimate gives more realistic surface irradiance values than SMS, particularly during summer. Additionally, irradiance values calculated by GM02 using the buoy meteorological fields and ECMWF (The European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts) meteorological data show the suitability of the ECMWF data usage. Through tests of GM02 sensitivity to key regional meteorological factors, we explore the main factors contributing significantly to a reduction in summertime solar irradiance in the Adriatic Sea.
Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) is the first optical survey system of its kind in a way that three KMTNet observatories are longitudinally well-separated, and thus have the benefit of 24-hour continuous monitoring of the southern sky. The wide-field and round-the-clock operation capabilities of this network facility are ideal for survey and the physical characterization of small Solar System bodies. We obtain their orbits, absolute magnitudes (H), three dimensional shape models, spin periods and spin states, activity levels based on the time-series broadband photometry. Their approximate surface mineralogy is also identified using colors and band slopes. The automated observation scheduler, the data pipeline, the dedicated computing facility, related research activity and the team members are collectively called 'DEEP-South' (DEep Ecliptic Patrol of Southern sky). DEEP-South observation is being made during the off-season for exoplanet search, yet part of the telescope time is shared in the period between when the Galactic bulge rises early in the morning and sets early in the evening. We present here the observation mode, strategy, software, test runs, early results, and the future plan of DEEP-South.
Beijing-Arizona-Taipei-Connecticut (BATC) survey is a long term project to map the spectral energy distribution of various objects using 15 intermediate band filters and aims to cover about 450 sq degrees of northern sky. The SED information, combined with image structure information, is used to classify objects into several stellar and galaxy categories as well as QSO candidates. In this paper, we present a preliminary setup of robust data reduction procedure recently developed at NCU and also briefly discuss general classification scheme: redshift estimate, and automatic detection of variable objects.
From 146 B.C. to A.D. 1760, 363 sets of cometary observations have been recorded in Chinese Ancient Records of Celestial Phenomena. The positions of all recorded comets, or their paths, on the sky are compared. Taking into account the perturbations of all nine planets and using the numerical method of N-body problem, the orbits of well-recorded comets are calculated. Identification of a periodic comet is presented.
Two control algorithms of active suspension system for improving ride quality are described and their effectiveness is assessed using a quarter car model. Optimal control approach demonstrates great flexibility to meet various running conditions of a vehicle. However, in order to fully utilize the power of optimal control apporach, accurate estimation of the state variables is essential. Simple, yet effective sky-hook algorithm seems to be well suited for real application because of its much relaxed requirements on sensing the stste variables and relative easiness to implment.
A deep stellar analysis is introduced for the poorly studied open cluster NGC 2509. The Near-IR database of the digital Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) has been used to re-estimate and refine the fundamental parameters of the cluster, i.e. age, reddening, distance, and diameter. As well as, luminosity function, mass function, total mass, relaxation time, and mass segregation of NGC 2509 have been estimated here for the first time..
