  • A deep neural network composed of encoders and decoders, such as U-Net, used for speech enhancement, concatenates the encoder to the decoder through skip-connection. Skip-connection helps reconstruct the enhanced spectrum and complement the lost information. The features of the encoder and the decoder connected by the skip-connection are incompatible with each other. In this paper, for complex-valued spectrum based speech enhancement, Self-Attention (SA) method is applied to skip-connection to transform the feature of encoder to be compatible with the features of decoder. SA is a technique in which when generating an output sequence in a sequence-to-sequence tasks the weighted average of input is used to put attention on subsets of input, showing that noise can be effectively eliminated by being applied in speech enhancement. The three models using encoder and decoder features to apply SA to skip-connection are studied. As experimental results using TIMIT database, the proposed methods show improvements in all evaluation metrics compared to the Deep Complex U-Net (DCUNET) with skip-connection only.

  • This paper introduces a derivation method of both P-SKIP and B-SKIP modes for illumination compensation in the multi-view video coding scheme. In this proposed method, mismatches between IC flag and IC offset in P-SKIP mode are removed, and also computational complexity is far reduced in B-SKIP mode in comparison to a multi-view video coding scheme. In simulation results, proposed method has the almost same coding efficiency in comparison with the referenced coding scheme. However computational complexity in 11m-time decoding process is tremendously reduced, such that the average number of blocks that should be processed in P-SKIP mode is saved in about 7.47%, and the average number of operations per block in B-SKIP mode is saved in about 50.36% and corresponding average decoding time per block is also saved in 46%.

  • In order to reduce the complexity of HEVC, we propose a fast mode decision algorithm in depth videos. Since almost CU mode is decided as SKIP mode in depth-continuity regions, we design the algorithm using the property of depth videos. If cost of SKIP is smaller than the multiplication between the threshold for EarlySKIP and average cost of SKIP, EarlySKIP is performed. Otherwise, we calculate Inter $2N{\times}2N$. Then, if motion vector of Inter $2N{\times}2N$ is 0 and variance of CU is smaller than threshold for inter, we skip Inter $2N{\times}N$, Inter $N{\times}2N$. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm reduces the encoding time from 39% to 82% with negligible PSNR loss and bitrate increase.

  • We address a new storage policy, called Skip-k storage, which gives storing priority to the items with relatively higher turnover rates. Applying the policy in storage systems such as AS/RS will reduce expected travel distance considerably. We analyze system behavior and find an appropriate skip size expressed by the system parameters in case arrival rates become larger enough.

  • In a deep neural network (DNN)-based speech enhancement, using global and local input speech information is closely related to model performance. Recently, a nested U-Net structure that utilizes global and local input data information using multi-scale has bee n proposed. This nested U-Net was also applied to speech enhancement and showed outstanding performance. However, a single skip connection used in nested U-Nets must be modified for the nested structure. In this paper, we propose a multi-level skip connection (MLS) to optimize the performance of the nested U-Net-based speech enhancement algorithm. As a result, the proposed MLS showed excellent performance improvement in various objective evaluation metrics compared to the standard skip connection, which means th at the MLS can optimize the performance of the nested U-Net-based speech enhancement algorithm. In addition, the final proposed m odel showed superior performance compared to other DNN-based speech enhancement models.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out what type of skip button used in forced exposure advertising is the most positive to the users. The four types of skip buttons were produced for the experiment and tested by survey and eye tracker to reveal the effects of the skip buttons on perceived intrusion, advertising attention, attitude toward advertising, and memory consisting of recall and recognition. Out of 80 participants, 20 were randomly assigned to the specific type of skip button group. The results showed that there is no statistical difference in advertising attention, perceived intrusiveness and attitude toward advertising. However, the recall and recognition rate are the highest in the static text type and kinetic text, product image, and default follow statistically. This study has implications for using skip buttons as a major variable for inventory of TrueView advertising effects and suggests that the amount of information in the image is critical processed by users within very short time.

  • This paper is the generalization of the modified two-level skip-lot sampling plan(MTSkSP1) to n-level. The general formulas of the operating characteristic(OC) function, average sample number(ASN) and average outgoing quality(AOQ) for the plan are derived using Markov chain properties. The operating characteristic curves, average sample numbers and average outgoing qualities of a reference plan, modified two-level, three-level and five-level skip-lot sampling plans are compared.

  • PI(3,4,5)$P_3$ produced by the activated PI3-kinase is a key lipid second messenger in cell signaling downstream of insulin. Skeletal muscle and kidney-enriched inositol phosphatase (SKIP) identified as a 5'-inositol phosphatase that hydrolyzes PI(3,4,5) $P_3$ to PI(3,4)$P_2$, negatively regulates the insulin-induced glycogen synthesis in skeletal muscle. However the mechanism by which this occurs remains unclear. To elucidate the function of SKIP in glycogen synthesis, we employed RNAi techniques to knockdown the SKIP gene in differentiating C2C12 myoblasts. Insulininduced phosphorylation of Akt (protein kinase B) and GSK-3$\beta$ (Glycogen synthase kinase), subsequent dephosphorylation of glycogen synthase and glycogen synthesis were increased by inhibiting the expression of SKIP, whereas the insulin-induced glycogen synthesis was decreased by overexpression of WT-SKIP. Our results suggest that SKIP plays a negative regulatory role in Akt/ GSK-3$\beta$/GS (glycogen synthase) pathway leading to glycogen synthesis in myocytes.

  • A feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effect of skip-a-day feeding program in early growing stage of male broiler chicks on the compensatory growth, and development of visceral organs during the later realimentation period. Day-old 328 male broiler chickens( Avian x Avian) were divided into control(ad libitum feeding) and skip-a-day feeding(limited feeding) treatments. Each treatment was consisted of 4 pens( replicates) of 41 birds each. Chickens on the skip-a-day program were fasted every other day during the second wk of age(8~15 d of age). During the starter period(0~4 wk), chickens were fed a commercial crumble diet. A commercial pellet diet was fed to chickens during the finishing period( 5~8 wk). Chickens were group-weighed every week, and one bird was selected from each pen to measure carcass characteristics. The skip-a-day program delayed the growth rate of male broilers up to 4 wk of age(P
