Phloxine O, a Cosmetic Colorant, Suppresses the Expression of Thymic Stromal Lymphopoietin and Acute Dermatitis Symptoms in Mice

  • Cosmetics are primarily applied to the skin; therefore, the association of cosmetic dyes with skin diseases or inflammation is a topic of great interest. Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) is an interleukin 7-like cytokine that activates dendritic cells to promote Th2 inflammatory immune responses. TSLP is highly expressed in keratinocytes under inflammatory conditions, which suggests that it may play a critical role in the development of skin diseases, such as atopic dermatitis. Therefore, we investigated whether cosmetic dyes influenced the production of TSLP by keratinocytes. Phloxine O, also known as D&C Red No.27, is one of the most common red synthetic pigments and is widely used in colored cosmetics. Our results showed that Phloxine O downregulated phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate-induced production of TSLP in a murine keratinocyte cell line (PAM212). Phloxine O also suppressed TSLP expression in KCMH-1 cells, which are mouse keratinocytes that constitutively produce high levels of TSLP. To investigate the in vivo effects of Phloxine O, we induced TSLP expression in mouse ear skin by topically applying MC903, a vitamin D3 analogue that is a well-known inducer of atopic dermatitis-like symptoms. Topical application of Phloxine O prevented MC903-induced TSLP production in mouse ear skin, attenuated the acute dermatitis-like symptoms and decreased serum IgE and histamine levels in mice. Suppression of TSLP expression by Phloxine O correlated with reduced expression of OX40 ligand and Th2 cytokines in mouse ear skin. Our results showed that Phloxine O may be beneficial to prevent dermatitis by suppressing the expression of TSLP and Th2 cytokines in skin.

Oral Administration of Lactobacillus plantarum HY7714 Protects Hairless Mouse Against Ultraviolet B-Induced Photoaging

  • Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation alters multiple molecular pathways in the skin, thereby inducing skin damage, including photoaging. In recent years, probiotics have gained interest due to their beneficial effects on skin health, such as inhibiting atopic dermatitis and improving skin immunity or inflammation. However, little is known about the effects of probiotics on UVB-induced photoaging. In this study, we evaluated the effect of Lactobacillus plantarum HY7714 against UVB-induced photoaging in human dermal fibroblasts and hairless mice. The results showed that L. plantarum HY7714 treatment effectively rescued UVB-reduced procollagen expression through the inhibition of UVB-induced matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 expression in human dermal fibroblasts. Data from a western blot showed that L. plantarum HY7714 inhibited the phosphorylation of Jun N-terminal kinase, thereby suppressing the UVB-induced phosphorylation and expression of c-Jun. Oral administration of L. plantarum HY7714 clearly inhibited the number, depth, and area of wrinkles in hairless mouse skin. Histological data showed that L. plantarum HY7714 significantly inhibited UVB-induced epidermal thickness in mice. Western blot and zymography data also revealed that L. plantarum HY7714 effectively inhibited MMP-13 expression as well as MMP-2 and -9 activities in dermal tissue. Collectively, these results provide further insight regarding the skin biological actions of L. plantarum HY7714, a potential skin anti-photoaging agent.

Multiple nonmelanocytic skin cancers in multiple regions

  • The most common forms of nonmelanocytic skin cancer (NMSC) are basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The growing incidence of skin cancer in the Republic of Korea has sparked increasing scientific interest in these types of tumors. In the case described herein, multiple NMSCs occurred asynchronously in various areas of the body in a single patient. A 67-year-old man presented with an ulcerative lesion on the right retro-auricle and multiple keratinized masses on the back and face. The right retro-auricular lesion was diagnosed as BCC, and the keratinized masses on the patient's back and face were diagnosed as SCC. He subsequently presented with numerous pigmented skin lesions on the forehead, temple, pre-auricle, neck, right forearm, right hand, and both thighs. One lesion on the neck was diagnosed as BCC, and five lesions on the right hand and forearm were diagnosed as SCC. The patient was also diagnosed with supraglottic SCC and external auditory canal SCC. An otolaryngologist performed radical excision of the primary SCC. Suspected skin cancer lesions observed on the face and both ears were diagnosed as SCC. Patients with multiple NMSCs are at an elevated risk for additional skin cancers, making periodic follow-up important; furthermore, all suspicious lesions should be biopsied.

AF를 위한 피부색 영역의 얼굴 특징을 이용한 Face Detection 알고리즘 및 하드웨어 구현 (Face Detection Algorithm and Hardware Implementation for Auto Focusing Using Face Features in Skin Regions)

  • 본 논문은 얼굴을 자동 초점(AF, Auto Focusing) 기능의 관심영역(ROI, Region of Interest)으로 이용하기 위한 얼굴 검출(Face Detection) 알고리즘 및 하드웨어 구현에 관한 것이다. 얼굴 검출을 위해 YCbCr 색 좌표계에서의 피부색 영역을 바탕으로 얼굴의 특징을 이용하였다. 얼굴에 해당하는 피부, 눈에 해당하는 에지, 그리고 입에 해당하는 음영의 픽셀수를 얼굴 특징으로 선택하였고, 얼굴 특징은 2,000개의 얼굴 샘플을 통하여 통계적으로 구하였다. 제안된 알고리즘은 하드웨어 설계 시, 하드웨어 자원의 효율성을 고려하여 영상의 중심에 가까운 두 명의 얼굴을 검출하게 하였다. 그리고 검출된 얼굴을 자동 초점의 관심 영역으로 이용하기 위하여 얼굴 영역을 사각형의 박스로 표시하였고, 영상에서 박스의 시작점과 끝점에 해당하는 위치를 출력하게 하였다. 하드웨어로 설계된 얼굴 검출 기능은 FPGA 보드와 모바일 폰 카메라 센서를 사용하여 검증하였다.

내재적 혁신성과 상품 관심이 특정 상품에 대한 소비자 혁신성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Innate Innovativeness and Product Interest on Product-Specific Consumer Innovativeness)

  • This study investigated consumer innovativeness by examining a relationship model of innate innovativeness, product interest, product-specific innovativenss, and actualized innovativeness for eight product items as well as observed gender differences in the variables. The eight product items for the survey were smartphones, movies, clothing, cars, skin care products/cosmetics, traveling, AI products, and books. An online survey was conducted in January 2018, and 400 responses from male and female consumers in their twenties and thirties, were analyzed using reliability test, descriptive statistics, regression, and ANCOVA. The positive effect of innate innovativeness and product interest on product-specific innovativeness, and positive effect of innate innovativeness and product-specific innovativeness on actualized innovativeness were confirmed. Product interest was found to have a stronger power on product-specific innovativeness than innate innovativeness. Gender differences in product interest, product-specific innovativeness, and actualized innovativeness were identified as hypothesized. Female consumer's clothing interest, clothing innovativenss, and actualized clothing innovativeness were higher than male consumers; in addition, male consumer's cars and AI interest, cars and AI innovativenss, and actualized cars and AI innovativeness were higher than female's. The controversial results that indicated the higher innate innovativeness of male consumers useful to further in-depth discussion and research. This study contributed to the theory construction of consumer innovativeness research areas and offered practical implications for new product launching and customer relationship management.

여성 소비자의 외모만족도가 아이 메이크업 관심도 및 메이크업 관리행동에 미치는 영향 (The Influence of Appearance Satisfaction on Interest in Eye Makeup and Makeup care Behavior in Female Consumers)

  • 본 연구는 여성 소비자의 외모만족도가 아이 메이크업 관심도 및 메이크업 관리행동에 미치는 영향을 검증하고, 아이 메이크업 화장품 시장에서의 마케팅 전략 수립 및 화장품 개발의 기초 자료를 제공하고자 하였다. 수도권 지역의 20-50대 여성을 대상으로 399부의 자료를 최종 분석하여 사용하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 일반적 특성에 따른 외모만족도, 아이 메이크업 관심도, 아이 메이크업 관리행동에서는 각 요인에 따라 차이가 나타났으나, 아이 메이크업에 대한 관심은 자신에 대한 관리로부터 시작되며 유행을 따르는 것에 관심을 가지는 것을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 외모만족도가 아이 메이크업 관심도에 미치는 영향에서는 이목구비에 대한 외모만족도가 높을수록 아이 메이크업 관심도가 높게 나타났다. 셋째, 외모만족도가 아이 메이크업 관리행동에 미치는 영향에서는 피부상태에 대한 외모만족도가 높을수록 유행선도형 메이크업 관리행동이 높게 나타났다. 결론적으로 외모만족도가 높을수록 아이 메이크업 관심도가 높아지고 메이크업 관리행동에 영향을 미치는 것을 알 수 있었다.

천연 탄산음료 제품의 소비자 이용 실태 및 인식도에 관한 연구 (A Study of Consuming Status and Consumer Awareness for Natural Carbonated Drinks)

  • Purpose: This research was to understand the consumer awareness and consumption of natural carbonated drinks in Korea. Methods: A survey was conducted enrolling adults over the age of 20, residing in Seoul and its metropolitan area, and who consumed natural carbonated drinks. Data analysis of 544 valid samples was performed using SPSS 17.0. Results: The study showed that consumers mostly purchased natural carbonated water the most, primarily as a water substitute. However, many other usages that the consumer selected showed a possibility for a more versatile usages of natural carbonated drinks. As for the reason of purchase, 'interest in a new product' showed the highest mean value. The factor 'interest in a new product', 'interest in its effectiveness on skin care and diet', 'lower-calorie products', 'health benefits from the usage of natural flavoring and coloring' and 'recommendation from acquaintances' showed statistically significant higher values for women than men. The most frequent and preferred location for purchase were large discount stores, and the most preferred, major informants were in the order 'tasting events at marts and department stores', 'TV/radio advertisement' and 'recommendations from family/friends'. Analysis of the purchase intent showed high interest for non-alcoholic natural carbonated drinks. Conclusion: The study results can be used as baseline data to establish marketing strategies in the emerging natural carbonated beverage market.

피부노화 방지에 이용되는 천연물의 종류 및 추출연구 동향 (Trends in Extraction Research and Types of Natural Substances Used for Skin Aging Prevention)

  • 노인인구 증가와 피부미용에 관해 관심이 커지고 천연물에 대한 과학적 고찰의 전문화는 천연소재에 대한 활용 증가로 이어지고 있다. 본 논문은 천연원료를 피부노화 경감 소재로 활용한 문헌의 추출법 및 경감능을 기반으로 천연물의 종류, 추출물의 기능성 및 추출 기술을 조사하였다. 천연물 유래 기능성 소재의 피부노화 경감에 대한 직접적 영향을 평가하기 위해 콜라겐에 미치는 영향 중 Procollagen 합성능과 MMP-1 경감능을 기반으로 추출물의 기능성을 판단하였다. 각 천연물은 위의 평가법을 이용한 문헌 중 식물, 한약재 및 녹조류로 구분하여 각 원료로부터 기능성 소재의 확보를 위한 추출 기술과 주요 결과를 서술한다. 이에 따라 피부노화 완화를 위한 기능성 소재의 추출 기술과 연구 동향을 제공하여 천연물 활용 연구 분야에 신속한 접근을 제공한다.

여대생의 의복디자인 기호와 흥미간의 상관연구 (A Study on the Relationship between College Women's Preference in Clothing Design and Interest)

  • The social and psychological approaches to clothing researches by Fluge,l, Hurlock and Barr in the early 1930's have since been developed greatly. It has now been generally agreed that clothing is the symbol of one's personality and social status, for clothing is regarded as the second skin and a manifestation of one's emotional states as well. Based on this consensus, this study was intended to observe the possible relationship between one's clothing design preference-in line, color and texture- and interest. For this survey, 200 college woman students from four universities were selected at random, and an interest-test standardized by prof. Jung Bum Mo and a questionaire made of 20 items on the clothing prferences were given. The results as commputerized and analyzed are as follows : 1. Line Preference a) Structural line : It is quite obvious that those like straight line are interested in fine arts, and curved line in physics. b) Out-line : Among tubular, bell and bustle of the silhouette, those like the bustle have shown particular interest in music, and the tubular in politics and business. c) Style : There is a salient tendency that those like a dressy style are much interested in music, and casual style in physics and physical exercise. 2. Color Preference a) Favorite color : Those like red, orange and yellow show a high interest in artistic activities and physical exercise, and black, grey and white in politics. b) Variety and combination of color ; These have shown no relationship to the interest. 3. Texture Preference a) The touch : Those like the texture with the feeling the crisp and rough are interested in fine arts, and of soft and smooth in the field of social service. b) Fabric surface : Those like naturalistic pattern, i.e. print of flowers, show much interest in music and literature, and plain fabrics in physical exercise.

팬데믹에 따른 소비자의 피부 관련 관심 영역 변화 분석: 구조적 토픽모델링을 중심으로 (Analyzing Changes in Consumers' Interest Areas Related to Skin under the Pandemic: Focusing on Structural Topic Modeling)

  • 최근 뷰티 산업은 급격한 성장과 혁신으로 빠르게 발전하였으며, 코로나19 팬데믹으로 인한 마스크 착용 및 비대면 생활의 증가와 같은 생활 양식 변화에 따라 새로운 전환을 겪고 있다. 본 연구는 온라인상에 나타난 소비자의 피부에 대한 의견을 분석하여 코로나19 팬데믹 이후 뷰티 산업의 변화를 수요 측면에서 이해하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 2017년부터 2022년까지 소셜 미디어에 게재된 게시글 중 '피부 고민'을 포함한 96,908개의 게시글을 수집하고 이를 구조적 토픽모델에 적용하여 피부 관련 주제를 도출하였다. 분석 결과, 소비자가 고민하고 있는 피부 관련 주제는 총 22개로 구분될 수 있음을 확인하였으며, 이들 주제는 크게 뷰티 제조업, 뷰티 서비스업·연관산업, 피부고민, 기타 등 4가지 유형으로 구분될 수 있었다. 또한 본 연구는 분석 기간을 코로나19 팬데믹의 확산 양상을 기준으로 7개 단계로 나누고 각 토픽의 비중이 어떻게 변화하는지를 상승, 하강, 일정, 진동으로 구분하여 보았다. 코로나19 팬데믹 전과 후 시점에 대하여 주제별 비중의 변화 양상을 분석한 결과, 피부 고민 중 피부 트러블(여드름)과 이와 관련된 제품(스팟패치)은 상승 분야로, 뷰티 연관산업 중 성형외과와 한의원은 하강 분야로, 뷰티 제조업 중 수분 마스크팩, 메이크업 제품은 큰 변화가 없는 일정 분야로 나타났다. 또한 코로나 발생기간 내에서 팬데믹이 최고조에 달한 시기에는 바디케어 제품과 관련된 토픽이 급증하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구의 결과는 뷰티 산업의 수요 변화에 대응하여 기업이 제품 개발, 마케팅 전략을 수립하는 데에 활용될 수 있으며, 팬데믹 발생 시 정부가 경제적 지원 정책을 수립하는 경우 정책 추진의 근거로서도 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
