Size distribution of diesel particles measured by ELPI and SMPS were compared. The results of ELPI and SMPS showed acceptable agreements in the qualitative comparison but showed differences in the quantitative comparison. In addition, the results of ELPI and SMPS showed a same trend about the change of engine loads. In this study, the effects of dilution methods and measuring positions on the measurement of PM size distribution were also studied by using the SMPS. As results, the decrease of large particles and the increase of small particles were observed when the dilution air was heated. It was also observed that the number concentration of the diesel particles was varied within 20$\%$ by the different measuring positions of 140 cm.
Particulate contamination is known to be a significant cause of failures of removable storage media. In this work, the effect of particles on the surface damage of removable hard disk media was investigated. The particles of different materials and size were introduced to the Head Disk Interface (HDI) using a particle injection system. It was round that the particles of particulate size and property serious damaged the media. This study showed that cleaning pad is effective for reducing particle contamination, except fer the particles of specific size and property. As a means to remove the particles of specific sire. the concept of using a stepped taper at the leading edge of the slider is proposed.
In this work, we investigate the toughening mechanism of the rubber-modified epoxy resin. The fracture toughness($K_{IC}$) is measured using CT specimens for three kinds of rubber-modified epoxy resin with different rubber content. The damage zone and rubber particles around a crack tip of a damaged specimen just before fracture are observed by a polarization microscope and an atomic force microscope(AFM). Both the fracture energy($G_{IC}$) and the size of damage zone increase with the rubber content below l5wt%. The size of the rubber particles can be qualitatively correlated with the $G_{IC}$ and the size of damage zone. The cavitation of the rubber particles inside the damage zone is observed, which is expected to be main toughening mechanism by rubber particles. the stress which causes the cavitation of rubber particles is estimated by the Dugdale model.

Barium ferrite particles were synthesized from Ba(NO$_3$)$_2$, Fe(NO$_3$)$_3$ and KOH mixed solutions using hydrothermal crystallization in supercritical water. The experimental apparatus for production of barium ferrite is a flow-type apparatus. Fine barium ferrite particles were produced because supercritical water causes the metal hydroxides to be rapidly dehydrated before significant growth takes place. The effects of Fe/Ba ratio and reaction time on the formation, particle size, and magnetic properties of barium ferrite were studied. When Fe/Ba ratio were varied from 0.5 to 12, single-phase barium ferrite powder was only produced in the range of 0.5〈Fe/Ba〈2. Also, with elevating reaction time, the BaO.6Fe$_2$O$_3$ particle size grew smaller. Especially, uniform barium hexaferrite particles of size 100-200nm were obtained at 80sec. In this study, therefore, single-phase barium ferrite particles are highly stable and can be produced continuously in a reaction time of less then 2min.
Atmospheric particulate matters (A. P. M. ) were collected on quartz-fiber filters from March 1985 to May 1986, using the Andersen high-volume air sampler and contents of six heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb Ni) in the A. P. M. were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. These heavy metals were divided into the three groups with respect to their particle size distribution. Fe and Mn were mainly associated with coarse particles (diameter > 2.0 $\mu$m), but Pb and Ni were related fine particles (diameter < 2.0 $\mu$m). Cu and Zn had mized size distributions in both of them. In the seasonal variation of heavy metals, the contents of Fe and Mn in spring and Ni and Pb in winter were higher than any other season. There were high mutual correlation between Fe and Mn coarse particles, and between Pb and Ni in fine particles.
Ultrafine cadmium ferrite particles have been investigated by X-ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy and SQUID magnetometry. All peaks of X-ray diffraction patterns are broad, but correspond to a cubic spinel structure with the lattice constant of 8.65 $\AA$. The average particle size determined by TEM is 9.7 nm and the size distribution of particles is not normal, but lognormal. The maximal magnetization measured at 5 K was 17.7 emu/g. The experimental data show a transi-tion from a disorder ferrimagnetic phase to a spin-glass phase (i.e. reentrant behavior) with a freezing temperature (T$\_$f/) of 30 K. Superparamagnetic behavior of the particles is confirmed by the coincidence of the plots of M vs. H/T for 100 and 300 K.
In the present study, a new pattern recognition algorithm was proposed to size spray particles using the boundary curvature information. Conceptually, this algorithm has an advantage over the others because it can identify the particle size and shape simultaneously, and also can separate the overlapped particles more effectively. Curvature of a boundary was obtained from the change of the slopes of two neighboring segments at the corresponding part. The algorithm developed in this study was tested by using an artificially prepared image of a group of spherical particles which were either isolated or overlapped. Particle sizes obtained from the measured curvatures agreed well with the true values. By detecting abrupt changes of the curvature along the image boundary, the element particles could be separated out from their overlapped images successfully.
Atmospheric aerosol particles collected in Seoul on four single days, each in every seasons of 2001, were characterized and classified on the basis of their chemical species using low-Z particle electron probe X-ray microanalysis (low-Z particle EPMA). Low-Z particle EPMA technique can analyze both the size and the chemical species of individual aerosol particles of micrometer size and provide detailed information on the size distribution of each chemical species. The major chemical species observed in Seoul aerosol were aluminosilicate, silicon dioxide, calcium carbonate, organic, carbon-rich, marine originated, and ammonium sulfate particles, etc. The soil originated species, such as aluminosilicate, silicon dioxide, and calcium carbonate were the most popular in the coarse fraction, meanwhile, carbonaceous and ammonium sulfate were the dominant species found in the fine fraction. Marine originated species such as sodium nitrate was frequently encountered, up to 30% of the analyzed aerosol particles.
Rheocasting of AZ91D magnesium alloys yielded the microstructure consisted of the spherical primary particles in the matrix which is different from conventional casting. Rheocast ingots were produced under various processing conditions using batch type rheocaster. Morphology of primary particles was changed from rosette-shape to spherical shape with increasing stirring rate$(V_s)$ and decreasing isothermal stirring temperature$(T_s)$. With increasing $V_s$, more effective shearing between the particles occurred rather than the agglomeration and clustering, so the primary particle size decreased. But with decreasing $T_s$, primary particle size increased mainly due to sintering and partially Ostwald ripening. The sphericity of primary particles increased with increasing $V_s$ and decreasing $T_s$ due to enhanced abrasion among the primary particles. The uniformity of primary particle size increased with increasing Vs and $T_s$.
A numerical analysis on condensation and coagulation of the metallic species with fly ash particles pre-existing in an incinerator was performed. Waste was simplified as a mixture of methane, chlorine, and small amounts of Pb and Sn. Vapor-phase amounts of Pb- and Sn -compounds were first calculated assuming a thermodynamic equilibrium state. Then theories on vapor-to-particle conversion, vapor condensation onto the fly ash particles, and particle-particle interaction were examined and incorporated into equations of aerosol dynamics and vapor continuity. It was assumed that the particles followed a log-normal size distribution and thus a moment model was developed in order to predict the particle concentration and the particle size distribution simultaneously. Distributions of metallic vapor concentration (or vapor pressure) were also obtained. Temperature drop rate of combustion gas, fly ash concentration and its size were selected as parameters influencing the discharged amount of metallic species. In general, the coagulation between the newly formed metal particles and the fly ash particles was much greater than that between the metal particles themselves or between the fly ash particles themselves. It was also found that the amount of metallic species discharged into the atmosphere was increased due to coagulation. While most of PbO vapors produced from the combustion were eliminated due to combined effect of condensation and coagulation, the highly volatile species, PbCl$_{2}$ and SnCl$_{4}$ vapors tended to discharge into the atmosphere without experiencing either the condensation or the coagulation. For Sn vapors the tendency was between that of PbO vapors and that of PbCl$_{2}$ or SnCl$_{4}$. To restrain the discharged amount of hazardous metallic species, the coagulation should be restrained, the number concentration and the size of pre-existing fly ash particles should be increased, and the temperature drop rate of combustion gas should be kept low.
