  • The objective of this research was to determine if leaf size (width and length) is correlated with seed size to the extent that leaf size can be used as a predictor of seed size in a population of soybean plants or lines. Twelve soybean strains, representing three distinct seed size groups, were analyzed. Data on seed size and leaf size of the 12 strains were obtained in 1994 and 1995 field experiments. Strain seed size was positively associated with leaf width (r=0.918) and leaf length (r=0.925). The results of our study indicate that there is a significant correlation between seed size and leaf size in soybean. It is possible that selection for greater seed size either leads to, or results from, greater leaf size.

  • In this study, by using nickel chloride solution as a raw material, a nano-sized nickel oxide powder with an average particle size below 50 nm was produced by spray pyrolysis reaction. A spray pyrolysis system was specially designed and built for this study. The influence of nozzle tip size on the properties of the produced powder was examined. When the nozzle tip size was 1 mm, the particle size distribution was more uniform than when other nozzle tip sizes were used and the average particle size of the powder was about 15 nm. When the nozzle tip size increases to 2 mm, the average particle size increases to roughly 20 nm, and the particle size distribution becomes more uneven. When the tip size increases to 3 mm, particles with an average size of 25 nm and equal to or less than 10 nm coexist and the particle size distribution becomes much more uneven. When the tip size increases to 5 mm, large particles with average size of 50 nm partially exist, mostly consisting of minute particles with average sizes in the range of 15~25 nm. When the tip size increases from 1 mm to 2 mm, the XRD peak intensities greatly increase while the specific surface area decreases. When the tip size increases to 3 mm, the XRD peak intensities decrease while the specific surface area increases. When the tip size increases to 5 mm, the XRD peak intensities increase again while the specific surface area decreases.

  • In this paper, the target size and model based target size estimator (TMBE) algorithm is presented for iimaging infrared (IIR) seeker. At the imaging seeker, target size information is important factor for accurate tracking. The model based target size estimator filter (MBEF) algorithm was proposed to estimate target size at imaging infrared seeker. But, the model based target size estimator filter algorithm need to know relative distance from the target. In order to overcome the problem, we propose target size and model based target size estimator filter (TMBEF) algorithm which based on the target size. The performance of proposed algorithm is tested at target intercept scenario. The experiment results show that the proposed algorithm has the accurate target size estimating performance.

  • To develop a optimized method for educing the errors associated with the estimation of portion size of foods, fuzzy-dta processing of portion size was performed. Cooked-rice was chosen as a food item. The experiment was conducted in two parts. First, to study the conceptions of respondents to bowl size(large, medium, small), 11 bowls of different size and shape were used and measured the actual weights of cooked-rice. Second, to study the conceptions of respondents to volume(1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4), 16 different volumes of cooked-rice in bowls of same size and shape were used. Respondents for this study were 31 graduate students. After collecting the data of respondents to size and volume, fuzzy sets of size and volume were produced. The critical values were calculated by defuzzification(mean of maximum method, center of area method). The differences of the weights of cooked-rice in various bowl size and volume between the critical values and the calculated values by average portion size using in conventional methods were compared. The results hows large inter-subject variation in conception to bowl size, especially in large size. However, conception of respondents to volume is relatively accurate. Conception to bowl size seems to be influenced by bowl shape. Considering that the new fuzzy set was calculated by cartesian product(bowl size and volume), bowl shape should be considered in estimation of bowl size to make more accurate fuzzy set for cooked-rice portion size. The limitations of this study were discussed. If more accurate data for size and volume of many other food items are collected by the increased number of respondents, reducing the errors associated with the estimation of portion size of foods and rapid processing will be possible by constructing computer processing systems.

  • This study provides a size specification and ease for the development of pants for working clothes in the construction industry according to season. We collected and measured the size specification of 4 types of Spring/Fall pants, 4 types of winter brushed bonding pants, and 4 types of winter padded pants. Subjective comfort evaluation and analysis of ease sensation were performed for all products on 12 subjects. The average size specifications for the pants according to seasons were as follows. Spring/Fall pants had 74.0/80.0cm waist size (relaxed/maximum stretched) and 104.0cm hip size. Winter brushed bonding pants had 76.0/83.4cm for waist size and 106.0cm for hip size. Winter padded pants had 71.5/84.0cm for waist size and 112.8cm for hip size. When designing a pattern by comparing product size specification and subject body size, the recommended ease is 0.2/7.2cm for waist size (relaxed, maximum stretched) and 13.6cm for hip size for Spring/Fall pants, and 0.2/6.2cm for waist size and 11.6cm for hip size of winter brushed bonding pants, and -5.3/7.2cm for waist size and 19.4cm for the hip size of winter padded pants.

  • Objective: This study aimed to provide policy implications by studying the class size of early childhood education institutes. Methods: By looking through researches, the educational influence of class size was examined. By using the latest statistical data, class size standard and status were compared. After class size perception in the field was considered and the main results of advanced researches were summarized and analyzed, the actual condition of class size was diagnosed. Furthermore, the national research trend was analyzed. Results: First, class size was an influencing factor on young children and teachers and its importance was reconfirmed. Second, as for standard in relation to class size in Korea, the maximum class size and teacher-child ratio were not presented together. In respect of overseas standards, infancy has similar standards, but early childhood has a little higher ratio. In the educational fields, there was growing awareness that class size should be modified. Third, there were not enough domestic researches on class size and they tended to be biased in terms of the method, targets, and contents. Conclusion/Implications: It is suggested that it is necessary to establish a class size policy for future early childhood education institutes, to implement a system, and to perform follow-up studies.

  • Fashion industry has tried to adopt the virtual garment technology to reduce the time and effort spent on sample creation. For garment manufacturers to adopt the virtual garment technology as an alternative to sample creation, 3D avatars that meet the needs of each brand should be developed. Virtual garment softwares that are available in the market provide avatars with standardized body models and allow to modify the size by manually entering size specifications. This study proposed a methodology to develop size specifications for 3D avatars as well as brand-customized production sizes. For this, a man's fashion brand which is using virtual garment technology is selected. And the Size Korea database is used to develop size specification based on the customers' body shape. This study developed regression equations on body size specifications, which in turn proposed a regression model to proportionately change size specifications of 3D fitting-models. Based on the each body size calculated by the regression model, a standard model is created, and the skeleton-skin algorithm is applied to the regression model to obtain the results of size changes. Then, the 3D model sizes are tested for size changes as well as measured, which verifies that the regression model reflects body size changes.

  • The pore structure of paper was modified by the application of the blending of pulp, refining, and filler particle size and ash content. It was conformed that the reflectivity of paper can be modified by the combination of the above parameters. It was also found that the change of reflectivity of paper was greatly dependent on the pore structure, such as average pore size, pore size distribution and porosity. The average pore size was decreased with addition of HwBKP, but the smallest average pore size was obtained from the addition of 80% HwBKP Refining of pulp decreased both average pore size and the reflectivity of paper. The pore size distribution of filled paper can be varied by the combination of filler particle size and ash content

  • This study was done to provide the basic data for improving the sizing system for infants and children's clothing. The 97 brands were surveyed through market research and on-line searching. Size and body measurements were analyzed according to the content of nominal size, type of market, national and foreign brands, and meaning of reference size. The results are as follows: 1. The meaning of nominal sizes was categorized as five cases: the size based on body measurements, the size based on age, the meaningless size, letter cord and combination of 2 out of 4 cases above. The nominal size based on height was most observed, and the meaningless nominal size was second. The meaningless nominal size can cause confusion when consumer buys clothing. 2. The department stores mainly used the nominal size based on body measurements, but the Internet shopping malls largely used the meaningless nominal size. 3. Both national brands and foreign brands mainly used the nominal size based on height. But national brands largely used the different nominal sizes. 4. 41 brands indicated body measurements as reference size and 26 brands indicated product measurements as reference size. Therefore consumers tended to confuse the body measurements with the product measurement.
