  • Two new harpacticoid species belonging to the genera $Microarthridion$ Lang, 1944 (Tachidiidae) and $Nitocra$ Boeck, 1864 (Ameiridae) are recorded from underground caves in the karst area of Ninh Binh Province, North Vietnam. $Microarthridion$ $thanhi$ n. sp. is distinguished from congeneric species by the number of setae on the antennary exopod, the structure of leg 5 in both sexes, and the finger-like process modified from an outer distal pinnate seta of the third endopodal segment of leg 2 in the male. $Nitocra$ $vietnamensis$ n. sp. has the character combination of six setae on the ellipsoidal exopod of leg 5 in both sexes, the first endopodal segment of leg 1 shorter than the whole exopod, the seta/spine armature of an inner seta of P2-P4 enp-1 and four elements on P2 enp-3, and the reduction of the proximal endite to a seta on the maxillary syncoxa.

  • Through total fatty acid analysis by the Gas chromatography, 17 different fatty acids were identified from the sap extracted from bark of Korean Rhus(Anacardiaceae), six species. Linoleic acid(C18 :2) and oleic acid(C18 : 1) were identified as major fatty acids for the species investigated, but except in R. chinensis. In the fatty acid composition for the species, one or two specific-fatty acid was detected, and its could be utilized as a useful taxonomic character. The result of cluster analysis by the 22 reliable characters in the fatty acid composition suggested first group was R.trichocarpa and R. succedanea, the second group, R.verniciflua, R.ambgua and R. sylvestris, but R.chinensis was a greatly independent species. The possible chemotaxonomic application of the fatty acid composition of bark in the genus Rhus was discussed.

  • In order to study 2-formylpyridine dithiocarbohydrazones (DTCH's) and their Cu(II) chelates as potential effective antimicrobial agents, twelve new compounds of six DTCH's and their Cu(II) chelates were synthesized. The compositions of Cu(II) chelates were determined on the basis of the data obtained from elemental analysis, electronic and IR spectrophotometry, and other method. They were tested for antimicrobial activity in vitro against a gram-positive, seven gram-negative bacterial species and three fungal species. DTCH's exhibited high antibacterial activity against the gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, but low activity against the various gram negative bacterial species. In contrast to DTCH'S, their Cu(II) chelates exhibited higher antibacterial activity against St. aureus, but weaker, if any, activity against the gram-negative bacterial species. Both DTCH's and their Cu(II) chelates showed relatively potent antifungal activity against Cryptococcus neoformans, but weak activity against Candida albicans and Candida pseudotropicalis.

  • This study on the four families (Ampithoidae, Corophiidae, Dulichlldae, and lschyroceridae) of amphipods of Ulreung Island was based on the materials collected at eight localities in Ulreung Island. Eleven species of nine genera in four familles were identified. Of these, four (Sunamphithoe sineplumosa, Podocerus ulreungensis, P. hoonsool, and Ventojassa dentipal ma) were new to science. All eleven species were new records for Ulreung Island. Six species were described and illustrated. The keys to all eleven species and higher taxa were provided.

  • A total of six species of the genus Nacoleia is recognized from Korea. Among them, two species, Nacoleia inouei Yamanaka, 1980 and Nacoleia satsumalis South, 1901 are reported for the first time from Korea. All the known species were enumerated with their available information including the collecting localities, the distributional ranges and host plants.

  • This survey was carried out in four areas in southern Korea from May 1983 through April 1986. A total of 1, 717 house rats was caught by trapping technique throughout the 4 areas. The total of 1, 535 trombiculid mites (4 genera, 7 species) was found only among Rattus norvegicus. Six species were observed in Seoul and Yangsuri areas, and 5 species in Seongnam area. No trombiculid mites were found in the rats caught in Inchon area. The highest infection rate of trombiculid mites (25%) was recorded in the rats caught in Seongnam area. And Leptotrombidium palpale was abundant species in general (detection rate; 72.8%) In seasonal variation, the hightes number of trombiculid population was observed from October through December in all the areas surveyed, and especially Euschongastia koreaensis apperaed more in autumn and winter than in any other season. The values of specie diversity and evenness of trombiculid mites found in Yangsuri were comparatively higher than those from the other areas.

  • Tissue culture systems to optimize regeneration plant species of Ocimum spp were evaluated as a method to micropropagate individual plants and to better study their biology in vitro. Ocimum species were also evaluated for the production of natural plant products during and following the regeneration process. The primary goal of this project was to enhance the regeneration efficiency of basil. Several factors were examined using different Ocimum species and commercial varieties. The effect of cytokinin combination, activated charcoal, gelling agents, and different carbon sources were investigated. Anthocyanin callus spots were produced only in four varieties among six tested. 'Sweet Dani' showed the best results on anthocyanin accumulation, while 'African beauty', 'Tree basil' and 'Methylcinnamate' produced only a few spots. Shoot regeneration was only achieved from 'Sweet Dani' explants. As the activated charcoal concentration increased, callus formation rate decreased respectively compare to the controls for all varieties. There was a decrease in callus growth with increasing concentration of agar and phytagel.
