Rolling Fatigue Life of Silicon Nitride Ceramic Balls (질화규소 세라믹볼의 구름피로수명)

  • The rolling fatigue lives (RFL) of five kinds of silicon nitride balls were investigated. Four kinds of Si$_3$N$_4$ balls were fabricated using different raw materials, sintering aids and sintering conditions, Commercially available Si3N4 ball was also studied for comparison. All the balls were finished up to the dimensional accuracy of Grade 10 defined in KS B 2001 (Steel Balls for Ball Bearings) with a size of 9.525mm. RFL tests were then conducted under the initial theoretical maximum contact stress 6.38 GPa and the spindle speed 10,000 rpm. Gear oil was provided by oiled race as lubricant. The results of RFL test indicated the prerequisitic conditions for the long rolling life of Si$_3$N$_4$ball : (1) the high density, (2) mjcrostructures consisted of small uniformly distributed grains, (3) little glassy phase in grainboundary, and (4) little crystalline phase and secondary phase that induces residual thermal stress due to the differences of thermal expansion coefficient with Si$_3$N$_4$Phase.

  • AlN powder was synthesized by carbothermal reduction and nitridation using Al2(SO4)3.18H2O as the starting material. The synthesized AlN powder was fine but contained oxygen. Therefore carbonaceous material (carbon black or phenol novolac) was added teogether with the sintering aids (CaO, CaF2, CaCl2, Y2O3 and YF3). It was found that pressureless sintering at 1700~180$0^{\circ}C$ after deoxidation at 150$0^{\circ}C$ suppressed the formation of second phase (27R) and reduced the contents of lattice oxygen within AlN ceramics.

  • The nonuniform shrinkage has been investigaed in pressureless sintering of $\alpha$-SiC, where born carbide and phenolic resin as a carbon source are used as densification aids. Compacted specimens, prepared from the granulated powder, were sintered at 215$0^{\circ}C$ for 30min in Ar atmosphere. Using the fresh and unseasoned graphite crucible, the upwarped specimens were obtained, while specimens were uniformly shrunk in the seasoned crucible. This effect is mainly due to the nonuniform distributjion of boron carbide during heatig, which originates in the reaction of boron carbide with CO gas, providing from the result of SiO2 reduction with carbon during heating.

High Strength $Si_3N_4/SiC$ Structural Ceramics (고강도 $Si_3N_4/SiC$ 구조세라믹스에 관한 연구)

  • Si3N4(p)-SiC(p) composites were prepared by gas pressure sintering at 190$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. $\alpha$-SiC with average particle size of 0.48${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were dispersed from zero to 50vol% in $\alpha$-Si3N4 with average particle size of 0.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Y2O3-Al2O3 system was used as sintering aids. When 10vol% of SiC was added to Si3N4, optimum mechanical properties were observed; relative density of 98.8%, flextural strength of 930MPa, fracture toughness of 5.9MPa.m1/2 and hardness value of 1429kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$. Grain growth of $\beta$-Si3N4 was inhibited as the amount of added SiC was increased. SiC particles were found inside the $\beta$-Si3N4 intragrains in case of 10, 20 and 30vol%SiC added composites.

  • Si3N4-TiN electro-conductive ceramic composites with 7wt% Al2O3+3wt% Y2O3 or 5wt% MgO as sintering aids were fabricated by pressureless sintering at 1,80$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. The 3pt. flexural strength, KIC and Vickers hardness were measrued in order to investigate the effects of TiN on the mechanical properties. Also oxidation behavior was observed by measuring the weight gain after exposure to air at 1,10$0^{\circ}C$ for 100h. the reaction products between Si3N4 and TiN was not detected by XRD and EDS. Mechanical properties of the composites were not influenced by the addition of TiN less than 30vol%, but oxidation resistance of the composites was rapidly decreased with the amount of added TiN.

  • In this study, in order to develop multilayer ceramic actuator for ultrasonic nozzle and ultrasonic vibrator, PMN-PNN-PZT ceramics were fabricated using $Li_2CO_3$. $Na_2CO_3$ and ZnO as sintering aids. And then, their piezoelectric and dielectric properties according to the amount of ZnO addition were investigated. The addition of ZnO improved density, dielectric constant, electromechanical coupling factor, mechanical quality factor and piezoelectric d constant of PMN-PNN-PZT ceramics due to the increase of sinterability and accepter doping effect. Electromechanical coupling factor and mechanical quality factor of PMN-PNN-PZT ceramics increased with ZnO amount up to 0.4wt% and then decreased. At the sintering temperature of $900^{\circ}C$ and 0.4wt% ZnO addition, density, dielectric constant, electromechanical coupling factor, mechanical quality factor and piezoelectric d constant showed the optimum value of 7.876g/$cm^2$, 1299, 0.612, 1151 and 369pC/N, respectively.

  • In this study, in order to develop multilayer piezo-actuator, PMN-PNN-PZT ceramics were fabricated using $Li_2CO_3,\;Na_2CO_3$, ZnO as sintering aids and their piezoelectric and dielectric properties were investigated according to the Bi substitution. Bi substitution enhanced electromechanical coupling factor$(k_p)$ and dielectric constant$({\varepsilon}_r)$. However, mechanical quality factor was deteriorated. At the sintering temperature of $870^{\circ}C$ and Bi substitution of 1mol%, density, electromechanical coupling factor$(k_p)$, mechanical quality factor$(Q_m)$, Dielectric constant$({\varepsilon}_r)$ and piezoelectric constant$(d_{33})$ of specimen showed the optimum value of $7.878g/cm^3$, 0.608, 835, 1603 and 397pC/N, respectively.

  • In this study, in order to develop low temperature sintering piezoelectric actuator, $Pb(Mg_{1/2}W_{1/2})_{0.03}(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_x(Zr_{0.50},Ti_{0.50})_{1-x-0.03}$ (PMW-PNN-PZT) ceramic systems were fabricated using $CaCO_3-Li_2CO_3$ sintering aid and their dielectric and piezoelectric properties were investigated with the variation of PNN substitution. The piezoelectric actuator requires high piezoelectric constant $d_{33}$ and high electromechanical coupling factor kp. At the PMW-PNN-PZT ceramics with 9mol% PNN substitution sintered at $900^{\circ}C$, the density, electromechanical coupling factor kp, dielectric constant, piezoelectric constant $d_{33}$ and mechanical quality factor Qm showed the excellent values of 7.86 [$g/cm^3$], 0.584, 1881, 485 [pC/N] and 76, respectively for piezoelectric actuator application.

  • In this study, in order to develop multilayer piezoelectric actuator, PMN-PNN-PZT ceramics were fabricated using $Li_2CO_3-Na_2CO_3$ as sintering aids and their piezoelectric and dielectric characteristics were investigated with the function of PNN substitution. With increasing PNN substitution, dielectric constant(${\varepsilon}r$), electromechanical coupling factor(kp), and piezoelectric d constant($d_{33}$) were increased at 10~12[mol%] PNN substitution and then decreased at all sintering temperature. With increasing PNN substitution, phase changed from tetragonal to rhombohedral at [10~12mol%] PNN substitution. At the 12[mol%] PNN substituted PMN-PZT composition ceramic sintered at 950[$^{\circ}C$], density, ${\varepsilon}r$, kp, $d_{33}$ and Qm showed the optimum value of 7.79[$g/cm^3$], 1160, 0.599, 419[pC/N) and 894, respectively for multilayer piezoelectric actuator application.
