A Study on the Combustion Characteristics of Coke and Anthracite in an Iron Ore Sintering Bed (소결층 내에서의 코크스와 무연탄의 연소 특성 비교 연구)

  • Coal combustion in an iron ore sintering bed is a key parameter that determines quality of the sintered ores and productivity of the process. In this study, effects of the different types of coal coke and anthracite - on the combustion in the iron ore sintering bed are investigated by modeling and experiment. Fuel characteristics of coke and anthracite are observed through a few basic analysis and thermo-gravimetric analysis. It was found that coke has a higher reactivity than anthracite due to the difference of surface area and density. Those characteristics are reflected to the 1-D unsteady simulation of the iron ore sintering bed. Calculation results show that different reactivity of the fuel can affect the bed combustion, which implies the further investigation should be performed for obtaining optimal combustion conditions in the sintering bed.

Properties of Compacts and Pellets Made Using Bimodal- Sized $UO_2$ Powder

  • The powder mixture which has a bimodal size distribution, with a large mode corresponding to AUC-UO$_2$ powder and a small one corresponding to ADU-UO$_2$ powder, was prepared, pressed into compacts, and sintered at 1680t for 4 hours in hydrogen gas. The compact density of the powder mixture increases with increasing ADU-UO$_2$content within a content of 20 wt %, since small ADU-UO$_2$ particles can fill interstices between large AUC-UO$_2$particles. The UO$_2$ pellet made using the powder mixture has a lower open porosity than that made using AUC-UO$_2$ powder alone. The mechanism for the formation of a flake-like pore is proposed, and the decrease in open porosity may be ascribed to the decrease in the number of flake-like pores.

  • The microstructure, electrical properties, and clamping voltage characteristics of $ZnO-Pr_6O_{11}-CoO-Cr_2O_3-Y_2O_3(ZPCCY)-based$ varistor ceramics sintered at $1350^{\circ}C$ were investigated as a function of sintering time from 1 to 3 h. With increasing sintering time, the average grain size and density increased in the range of $11.4\~16.0\;{\mu}m$ and $5.34\~5.54g/cm^3$, respectively, in accordance of increasing sintering time. The nonlinear exponent decreased in the range of $60\~26$ and the leakage current increased in the range of $1.3\~10.7\;{\mu}A$ with increasing sintering time. The clamping voltage ratio increased in the range $1.58\~1.65$ for ratio surge current of 10 A as the sintering time increased.

Synthesis of NiZn-Ferrite from Waste Iron Oxide Catalyst (산화철 페촉매를 애용한 NiZn-페라이트의 합성)

  • NiZn-ferrite was synthesized usign waste iron oxide catalysts which were produced from styrene monomer process and buried underground as an industrial wastes. The spinel type ferrite was obtained by calcination and sintering of the mixture of finely ground waste catalysts, nickel oxide and zinc oxide powders. The sintered body of Ni/sub 0.5/Zn/sub 0.5/Fe₂O₄ composition at 1230℃ for 5 hours showed the density of 5.38g/㎤, and initial permeability of 59 at 1 kHz. Not only cerium oxide, which existed as a major component in the catalyst, but also unicorporated NiO and ZnO into spinel structure remained as second phases after sintering.

  • The effects of joining process such as contact method, shape of joined area and pressure on the properties of Bi-2223 superconducting tape have been optimized. In the process tapes were etched to expose the superconductor core in the shape of 'ㅁ' and 'ㄷ'. The exposed cores of the two tapes were brought into contact, uniaxially pressed and sintered. Subsequently, the current capacity of the joined tape was measured as a function of uniaxial pressure. It was observed that the current capacity was significantly dependent on uniaxial pressure. The joined tape, fabricated with a pressure of 1,600 MPa, showed the highest value of current capacity(90%) of highest value of current capacity is resulted from improvements in core density, contacting area and grain alignment, etc. In addition the effect of processing variables on microstructural evolution and mechanical property of joined tape will be presented.

  • The effect of $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeding on preparation of zirconia/alumina gel fragment prepared by sol-gel processing was characterized through XRD, SEM, TG/DTA and IR analysis. Aluminum isopropoxide and zirconium butoxide were used as starting materials. $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeding restrained grain growth of alumina and zirconia, and decreased tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation of zirconia on cooling. Therefore, fine zirconia-toughened alumina composite having the relative sintered density of about 98% of theoretical at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 2h could be obtained.

  • Five Al2O3/SiC/metal composites with four different particle sizes of green SiC abrasive grains are grown by the directed oxidation of an commercially available Al-alloy. Oxidation was conducted in air at 100$0^{\circ}C$, 96 hours long. Slip casted SiC-fillers were placed on the alloy or SiC powder deposited up to the required layer thickness. Their microstructures are described and measurements of density, elastic constants, frexural strength, fracture toughness and work of fracture are reported. The results are compared with those of commercial dense sintered Al2O3. The properties of produced materials have a strong relationship to not only the properties of Al2O3, SiC, Al and Si but also to the phase share and phase distribution. The composite materials are dense (0.5% porosity), tough (KIC = 3.4~6.4 MPa{{{{ SQRT { m} }}), strong ({{{{ sigma }}B = 170~345 MPa) and reasonably shrinkage free producible. The reinforcements is attained mainly through the plastic deformation of ductile metal phase.

  • The hydrolysis of aluminum nitride was increased gradually with increasing reaction time from 1 hrs to 24 hrs and/or with decreasing the addition of the reaction water from 100 mι 100mι. Amorphous aluminum hydrate, formed in the beginning of the reaction, was transformed to bayerite and to pseudoboehmite at below and above 8$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. Aluminum oxynitride was synthesized by heating the partially hydrolyzed aluminum nitride at 1$700^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs or at 175$0^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. AlON specimen with 1 wt% of Y2O3 that was molded and then sintered pressurelessly at 190$0^{\circ}C$, exhibits 98% of the theoretical density and a translucency of 68% in the visible ray zone.

Microstructural Evolution and Dielectric Response Characteristics During Crystallization of Amorphous Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O3

  • Development of phases, evolution of microstructures, and dielectric response characteristics of amorphous lead iron tungstates during crystabllization were investiageted. A series of mircographs showing the evolution sequence of microstructures is presented. Crystallization was observed to initiate from inside of the amorphous material. A cubic perovskite phase developed fully at $760^{\circ}C$ from amorphous state via intermediate metastable crystalline structures. Dielectric constant of amorphous PFM was totally insensitive to the temperature change around the Curie temperature of crystalline material. Sintered pellet, with relative density of 96% and an almost pore-free dense internal microstructure, could be prepared from amorphous powder.

  • Hydroxyapatite powders were synthesized with Ca/P=1.67, 1.70 and pH=7, 11 by precipitation method and fluorine substituted hydroxyapatite ceramics were prepared using these powders. After characterization of these hydorxyapatite bioceramics, chemical bonding between these sepcimens in simulated body fluid was investigated. Bysubstitution of 7.5% of fluorine, hydroxyapatite was prevented to decompose into β-tricalcium phosphate and its sintered density and mechanical strength were increased. The bending strength of these hydroxyapatite ceramics was 137MPa. The hydroxyapatite ceramics chemically bonded each other in Ringer's solution and the component of bonded layer was also hydroxyapatite.
