The electrical conductivity of highly pure polycrystalline sample of $La_2O_3$ has been measured at temperatures from $600^{\circ}C$ to $1,050^{\circ}C$ and oxygen pressure range of $1{\times}10^{-6}$ torr to $1{\times}10^2$ torr. The defect structure and semiconductor type are investigated by measuring the temperature and oxygen pressure dependences of electrical conductivity. Sintered $La_2O_3$ exhibits the electrical conductivities in the range of $1{\times}10^{-9}\;to\;1{\times}10^{-3}\;ohm^{-1}{\cdot}cm^{-1}$ under the above oxygen pressures. The oxygen pressure dependences on electrical conductivity are characterized by 5.3 at $1,000^{\circ}C$ and 5.7 at $700^{\circ}C$ and more higher values of 9∼14 below $700^{\circ}C$. The increase in n value with decreasing temperature indicates that a simple conduction mechanism does not exist in this material. The conduction carriers are not metal vacancy but oxygen ion at lower pressures. The conduction data indicate a significant ionic conduction at lower temperatures and electronic conduction at higher temperatures.

MoSi2, (Mo1/2W1/2)Si2, and WSi2 powders were synthesized by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) method. The synthesized powders were heat-treated at 500, 1,000, 1,200, 1,300, 1,400, 1,500 and 1,600℃ in ambient atmosphere. Oxidation of Mo-W silicide powder was found at low temperature of 500℃. XRD structure analysis and DTA/TG data showed that MoO3 was formed with 500℃ heat treatment for 1 hour, and that it was α-cristobalite phase that was formed with 1200℃ heat treatment, not α-quartz phase which is commonly found and stable at room temperature. Existence of W accelerated decomposition at both low and high temperature. Fully sintered MoSi2 and (Mo1/2W1/2)Si2 specimen did not show decomposition or weight loss by oxidation, with 1 hour heat treatment at either low or high temperature. Notably, it was difficult to sinter WSi2 because of oxidation reaction at low temperature.

In order to improve electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of 8YSZ SOFC electrolyte material, we used Al₂O₃ as an additive and applied the spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. The sintered bodies were densified above 96 % of theoretical density at 1200℃ and possessed microstructures composed of homogeneous grains less than 1 ㎛ in size. The addition of Al₂O₃ improved fracture toughness and bending strength by inhibiting grain growth of 8YSZ and increased total ionic conductivity because grain interior conductivity appeared to remain constant and grain boundary conductivity increased. It was assumed that the dissolution of Al₂O₃ into 8YSZ which was inevitable problem at commercial sintering method was effectively prohibited by the SPS technique with a relatively low sintering temperature and the reaction between Al₂O₃ and SiO₂ present at grain boundary to produce the crystalline Al/sub 2-x/Si/sub l-y/O/sub 5/ phase, resulting in the increase of grain boundary conductivity.

$SiC/Si_3N_4$ composites were prepared by mixing ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ powder to $\alpha$-SiC powder in the range of 10 to 30 vol% with 10 vol% interval. 6 wt% of $Al_2O_3$ and $Y_2O_3$ were also added respectively as sintering aids. Then, pressureless sintering was performed at 1,78$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours in $N_2$ gas. In the case of adding 20 vol% of ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ powder, the relative desity to theoretical value and the flexutal strength were 92 % and 3,560 MPa, respectively. The smallest relative worn amount thereof was $2.68{\times}10^{-3}\;mm^2$ for 20 vol% ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$. The composite containing 30 vol % of ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ powder showed the highest fracture toughness $(K_{1c})$ of $4.9\;MN/m^{3/2}$, although the reduction of the wear resistance due to the effect of the pores was observed.

The microstructure of ceramic composite has been found to be governed by the type and amount of the secondary phase, the sintering aid, and the sintering conditions such as sintering temperature, pressure and holing time. Moreover, tribological properties are strongly dependent on microsturcture of composite and operating conditions. In this study, silicon nitride with various amount of magnesia as a sintering aid were prepared and sintered by a hot pressing (HP) technique. Microstructure, mechanical properties (hardness, strength, and fracture toughness), and tribological properties in different environments of $Si_{3}N_{4}$ (in air, water, and paraffine oil) were investigated as a function of MgO content in $Si_{3}N_{4}$. As increasing the amount of MgO in $Si_{3}N_{4}$, the glassy phase in the grain boundaries enlarged the $\beta$-phase elongated grains, and also degraded the Hertzian contact damage resistance. Tribological behaviors in air was seemed to be determined by fracture toughness of $Si_{3}N_{4}$, and those in water and paraffin oil was seemed to be determined by hardness as well as strength. Since glassy grain-boundary phase (MgO) in $Si_{3}N_{4}$ expected to be reacted with water during sliding, such tribochemical reaction reduced wear. In paraffin oil under a higher applied load, the initial sliding dominated wear rate because of Hertzian contact damage.

Ecological lightweight aggregates were made by using the wastes come from various industrial fields. Wastes were crushed and pulverized by mills and a certain portions of wastes were mixed and formed by pelletizer like small beads. The formed lightweight aggregates were finally sintered with $1125^{\circ}C$/15 min conditions by using rotary kiln. Lightweight concrete sound absorbers were made of ecological lightweight aggregates K73 (Coal bottom ash 70 wt%: Dredged soil 30 wt%) and K631 (Clay 60 wt%: Stone sludge 30 wt%: Spent bleaching clay 10 wt%). For the reference, lightweight concrete sound absorbers made of DL (German made 'L' company LWA) were also made under the same conditions. Sound absorption characteristics were observed and measured according to the kinds of aggregates, water/cement ratio (W/C=20, 25, and 30%), and designed pore rates (V=20, 25, and 30%). The pore rates of the lightweight concrete sound absorber were turned out to be 5 to 10% higher than designed ones. Absorption coefficient of the lightweight concrete sound absorber by using K631 aggregates with W/C=20% and V=25% conditions was 0.88 at 1000 and 3150 Hz from the measurement by the impedance tube.

In this study, the artificial coarse aggregate was manufactured by using coal ash and low grade clay. The characteristics of a coal ash-clay system were investigated using XRD, XRF, TG-DTA, SEM and Dilatometer with various coal ash contents. The chemical compositions are the fly ash, bottom ash and clay, $Al_2O_3$ are 28.5 wt%, 32.4 wt% and 18.1 wt%, and $SiO_2$ are 33.0 wt%, 53.7 wt% and 68.4 wt% in weight ratio, respectively. The shrinkage of specimens started at around $850^{\circ}C$ and changed little up to $1100^{\circ}C$, but increased markedly at above $1100^{\circ}C$. The shrinkage rate is strongly related to the decarbonization amount of coal ash. At the sintering temperature $1150^{\circ}C$, it was found that quartz, mullite, anorthite and albite phase exist in all specimens. It was found that bottom-clay system specimen sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ had a good compressive strength of 87.5 kg/$cm^2$, and the compressive strength of bottom-clay specimen was higher than that of fly-clay system specimen. The reusability of coal ash as a raw material in the process of shotcrete resources such as artifical coarse aggregate is highly expected.

We have applied mechanical alloying (MA) to produce soft magnetic composite material using a mixture of elemental $Fe_2O_3$-Mg powders. An optimal milling and heat treatment conditions to obtain soft magnetic ${\alpha}$-Fe/MgO composite with fine microstructure were investigated by X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) measurement. It is found that ${\alpha}$-Fe/MgO composite powders in which MgO is dispersed in ${\alpha}$-Fe matrix are obtained by MA of $Fe_2O_3$ with Mg for 30 min. The saturation magnetization of ball-milled powders increases with increasing milling time and reaches to a maximum value of 69.5 emu/g after 5 h MA. The magnetic hardening due to the reduction of the ${\alpha}$-Fe grain size by MA was also observed. Densification of the MA powders was performed in a spark plasma sintering (SPS) machine at $800{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$ under 60 MPa. X-ray diffraction result shows that the average grain size of ${\alpha}$-Fe in ${\alpha}$-Fe/MgO nanocomposite sintered at $800^{\circ}C$ is in the range of 110 nm.

Influences of dose and particle size of $Al_2O_3$ filler and sintering time on the dielectric properties of $Al_2O_3$ filler/CaO-$Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ (CAS) glass composites were investigated with a view to applying the composites to the substrate material in low temperature co-firing ceramic (LTCC) technology. The increased addition of $Al_2O_3$ filler with the particle size of 1 ${\mu}m$ monotonically decreased the density of the sintered specimen at a given temperature, while sintering of the 10 wt% $Al_2O_3$ added specimen at $925^{\circ}C$ for 2 h demonstrated 96.0 % of the relative density, dielectric constant of 6.34, and quality factor of 2,760 GHz. As for the influence of the particle size of the $Al_2O_3$ filler, there existed an optimum particle size (30 ${\mu}m$) to ensure successful densification (96.5 %) of the 10 wt% $Al_2O_3$/CAS composites at $925^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, at which condition the specimen demonstrated dielectric constant of 5.45 and quality factor of 3,740 GHz. When the influence of the sintering time of the 10 wt% $Al_2O_3$) (30 ${\mu}m$) added specimen was investigated at the sintering temperature of $925^{\circ}C$, an overly long sintering time degraded dielectric properties due to the over-sintering and the significant growth of the second phase such as anorthite, while the sintering for 4 h demonstrated 96.58 % of the relative density, dielectric constant of 5.4, and quality factor of 4,050 GHz. These results demonstrate the feasibility of the investigated material as the substrate material in LTCC technology.
