(Photosensitive Polymers VII) Mechanism of Photosensitized Curing Reaction of Cinnamoylated Polymers ((感光性 高分子에 關한 硏究 VII) Cinnamoylated Polymers의 光增感 硬化反應機構)

  • The multistep mechanism of photosensitized curing reaction cinnamoylated photosensitive polymer is proposed from the energy level diagram of cinnamic acid and sensitizer, and from the fact that excess of sensitizer brings the sensitivity to a limiting value etc. Various factors which have effects on the ability of sensitizer are also discussed. The mechanism involves following steps: activation to the first excited singlet states of cinnamoyl group(C) and sensitizer(S) by their absorption of photon, their intersystem crossing to the lowest triplet state, bimolecular internal quenching by formation of excimer of sensitizer, triplet excitation energy transfer and intermolecular addition between cinnamoyl group in ground state and that in triplet state. The rate equation derived from this mechanism is $-\frac{d[C]}{dt} = \frac{K_1[C]}{K_2 + [C]}[\frac{I^c_{abs}}{K_3 + [S]} + \frac{K_4[C]}{(K_5 + [C])(K_6 + [S])}(I^s_{abs} + \frac{K_7I^c_{abs}[S]}{K_8 + [S]})]$ where $I^c_{abs}\;and\;I^s_{abs}$: the rates of absorption of photon by cinnamoyl group and sensitizer $K_n$: Constants. It is proved with the cinnamate of poly(glyceryl phthalate)(PGC) in the absence of sensitizer using the infrared analytical method and successfully applied for the experimental data reported on the effects of the degree of cinnamoyl esterification and the concentration of sensitizer upon the sensitivity.

Effects of Riboflavin-photosensitized Oxidation on the Formation of Volatile Compounds in Oleic Acid Model Systems (리보플라빈 광산화에 의한 올레산 모델시스템에서 휘발성 물질 발생연구)

  • Formation mechanisms of light-induced volatile compounds were studied using riboflavin-photosensitized oleic acid model systems. Volatile compounds in model systems with 4000 ppm riboflavin at $35^{\circ}C$ under light or in the dark for 39 hr were isolated and identified by a combination of solid phase microextraction (SPME), gas chromatography (GC), and mass spectrometry (MS). Total volatiles in oleic acid with riboflavin under light for 13, 26, and 39 hr increased by 90, 190, and 270%, respectively, compared to those in oleic acid without riboflavin under light. Total volatiles in samples without riboflavin under light or samples with riboflavin in the dark were not significant in tested conditions (p>10.05). Riboflavin did not act as a photosensitizer when it was dispersed in oleic acid. Heptane, octane, heptanal, octanal, nonanal, and 2-nonenal were significantly increased in riboflavin-photosensitized samples compared to those in samples without riboflavin (p<0,05). Light-induced volatile compounds including heptanal and 2-nonenal from oleic acid could be explained using singlet oxygen oxidation, the formation mechanism of which were not understood using triplet oxygen oxidation. These results will help to understand volatile formation in oleic acid containing foods stored under light.

Effect of Ulmus macrocapa Ethanolic Extracts on Anti-oxidant Activity and Melanin Synthesis in B16F1 Cells (B16F1세포에서 항산화 활성 및 멜라닌 합성에 대한 유백피 에탄올 추출물의 효능)

  • Melanin plays a key role in the protection of skin from ultraviolet light that generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as superoxide, hydroxyl radical, singlet oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. However, the ROS leading to the oxidation of lipids, proteins and DNA are involved in the overproduction of melanin that is known to cause melasma, age spots and freckles. Among the herb medicines, Ulmus macrocarpa used in this study was reported to contain flavonoids as a main component. The aim of this study is to investigate the whitening and anti-oxidant effects of Ulmus macrocarpa ethanolic extracts (UMEE) in B16F1 cells. UMEE below $3.12{\mu}g/ml$ did not show cytotoxicity. In an anti-oxidant experiment, UMEE showed not only high reducing power and scavenging activity on DPPH, but it was also observed that UMEE exhibit an inhibitory effect on lipid peroxidation. UMEE did not display an inhibitory effect on tyrosinase activity in vitro. However, UMEE inhibited melanin synthesis in B16F1 cells. In addition, UMEE reduced the expression levels of tyrosinase and tyrosinase-related protein-2 (TRP-2), which are key enzymes in melanogenesis. These results indicate that UMEE exert a whitening effect through the inhibition of both tyrosinase and TRP-2 expressions as well as anti-oxidant activity, suggesting that UMEE could have the functional potential for a whitening effect on the skin.

  • It has been well known that extended exposure to reactive oxygens causes severe damage to susceptible biomolecules. In this study, the effects of flavonoids including trifling and kaempferol from Ginseng leaves on single oxygen induced photohemolysis of erythrocytes and free radical scavenging activities were investigated . Each flavonoid aglycone (5-50UM) such as kaempferol, quercetin or baicalein exhibited a high protective effect against the photohemolysis. They protected the cells by scavenging 102 and free radicals. Although the free radical scavenging activities of the flavonoid glycosides were not much lower than those of their corresponding aglycones, their insolubility into lipid bilayers of membrane made them less effective in preventing the photohemolysis induced by 1O2. The 102 and free radical scavenging activities of flavonoids were estimated by the decomposition of the flavonoid by 1O2 and the bleaching of free radicals by the flavonoid, respectively. The solubilization of the flavonoid into micelle or erythrocytes was deduced from spectrophotometric and microscopic observations. The cooperation of L-ascorbic acid and a flavonoid, and a possible involvement of lipoxygenase or cyclooxygenase in the photohemolysis mechanism were discussed. Photocyclization Reactions of ($\omega$-Phthalimidoalkoxy)acetic Acids via Sequential Single Electron Transfer-Decarboxylation Pathways

  • Studies have been conducted to explore single electron transfer(SET) promoted photocyclization of ($\omega$-phthalimidoalkoxy)acetic acids(alkoxy=ethoxy, n-propoxy and n-butyloxy). Photocyclizations occur in methanol or acetone in high yields to produce cyclized products in which phthalimide carbonyl carbon is bonded to the carbon of side chain in place of the carboxylic group. These photocyclizations are thought to proceed through pathways involving intramolecular SET from oxygen in the $\alpha$-carboxymethoxy groups to the singlet excited state phthalimide moieties followed by decarboxylation of the intermediate $\alpha$-carboxymethoxy cation fadicals and cyclizations by radical coupling. The photocyclizations occur ca. three times faster in both methanol or acetone with one equivalent of sodium hydroxide added to the reactions and occur slower in acetone than in methanol. The efficient and regiselective cyclization reactions observed for photolyses in methanol represent synthetically useful processes for construction of heterocyclic compounds.

  • Reactive oxygen scavenging activity and immune stimulatory activity of lactobacilli were investigated by different free radical scavenging assays and Ig G assay. Lactobacilli culture (S/N) and its complex with $Mn^{2+}$ have significant effects in XOD assay and response to paraquat. Cell free extract significantly prevented the photohemolysis. Thus, it seems that each sample from lactobacilli has a different free radical scavening mechanism. Furthermore, it is assumed that cell free extract from lactobacilli activates antibody stimulation of B cell through a stimulation of T cell.

Aberration analysis of telephoto lens system by using thin lens approximation (얇은 렌즈 근사를 이용한 Telephoto Lens계의 수차해석)

  • We derived analytic formulae for the correction of spherical aberration, coma, and axial color of a two-components lens system consisted of a cemented doublet and a singlet by using the thin lens approximation. The correction formulae were applied to design a telephoto lens system. We examined two kinds of glass combinations in the design, one was crown-flint-crown combination and the other was flint-crown-flint combination. We found two kinds of achromatic aplanat solutions in the crown-flint-crown combination. For the case of flint-crown-flint combination, there were also two kinds of solutions, but their configurations are not useful in practice.

Optical design of three-mirror telescope system for infra-red and visible imaging (적외선 및 가시광선 결상용 3반사망원경계의 설계)

  • To design three-mirror telescope system (F/8, 120 inch in focal length) for visible and infra-red band imaging, methods for power configuring and correction of the third order aberrations were studied. In the design of the telescope system, a three-mirror system corrected for spherical aberration, coma, and astigmatism was used for infra-red imaging, and the aberrations were corrected by using conic surfaces. For visible imaging, a singlet corrector lens was appended at the front of the focal plane to correct filed curvature. The telescope system has diffraction limited performance for 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in wavelength within 2.4$^{\circ}$ of field-of-view. In the visible band imaging, the rms spot size of the telescope system is less than 25 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ within 3$^{\circ}$ of field-of-view for monochromatic light, and the telescope system satisfies flat field condition for CCD application.

  • The effect of glucose oxidase (GO) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) on the oxidative stability of fish oil was investigated from oxygen content and peroxide value determinations of oil samples stored in vial. GO could inhibit the oxidation of the oil by removing headspace oxygen. When SOD was solubilized in the oil, peroxide value was slightly lower than that of a control, indicating that the enzyme also had an effect on retarding the oxidation.

  • Cryptoglena pigra Ehrenberg from Korea was a photosynthetic euglenoid alga, which had typical characteristics of the Euglenales. The ultrastructure examination of C. pigra revealed certain features which were distinctly photosynthetic euglenoid: one U-shaped chloroplast with thylakoid membranes; two paramylon grains appressed to both sides of the chloroplast; eyespot associated with the chloroplast but not part of it. Three flagellar roots were associated with the two basal bodies. The four-membered dorsal root arose from the dorsal body and extended anteriorly following the reservoir membrane. At the base of the reservoir the dorsal band was nucleated by the dorsal root and it ran anteriorly between the reservoir membrane and eyespot. The dorsal band was continued with the microtubules of the canal and the pellicle. The singlet dorsal microtubules at the transition level arranged into doublets by a successive linkage of the existing adjacent microtubules, and the doublets rearranged into the cytoskeletal microtubules that were continuous with four microtubules in pellicles. Finally, the sixteen ridges gave rise to the pellicular ridges. The five to six-membered ventral root extended anteriorly into a cytoplasmic pocket through the reservoir and lined a cytoplasmic pocket.
