Temperature Prediction of Al6061 Tube in Cryogenic Heat Treatment by CFD Analysis and Experimental Verification (CFD 해석을 이용한 Al6061 튜브의 극저온 열처리 시 소재의 온도 예측 및 실험적 검증)

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the analysis method for prediction of temperature during cryogenic heat treatment. Experimental cryogenic heat treatment is conducted to observe the phenomena such as boiling of fluid, ice layer on the material surface and to measure the temperature distribution of Al6061 tube. The CFD analysis considering the observed phenomena in the experiment is performed to predict the temperature distribution and convection heat transfer coefficient at each stage of cryogenic heat treatment, in which the boiling of fluid is considered as the multi-phase condition of vapour and liquid. The formation of ice layer on the tube surface is also modeled between material and fluid. The predicted results are in good agreement with the experimental ones. From the results, it is shown that the analysis method can predict the temperature distribution and convection heat transfer coefficient during cryogenic heat treatment.

Convective heat transfer of MWCNT / HT-B Oil nanofluid inside micro-fin helical tubes under uniform wall temperature condition

  • Experiments are performed to investigate the single-phase flow heat transfer augmentation of MWCNT/HT-B Oil in both smooth and micro-fin helical tubes with constant wall temperature. The tests in laminar regime were carried out in helical tubes with three curvature ratios of 2R/d=22.1, 26.3 and 30.4. Flow Reynolds number varied from 170 to 1800 resulting in laminar flow regime. The effect of some parameters such as the nanoparticles concentration, the dimensionless curvature radius (2R/d) and the Reynolds number on heat transfer was investigated for the laminar flow regime. The weight fraction of nanoparticles in base fluid was less than 0.4%. Within the applied range of Reynolds number, results indicated that for smooth helical tube the addition of nanoparticles to the base fluid enhanced heat transfer remarkably. However, compared to the smooth helical tube, the average heat transfer augmentation ratio for finned tube was small and about 17%. Also, by increasing the weight fraction of nanoparticles in micro-fin helical tubes, no substantial changes were observed in the rate of heat transfer enhancement.

  • Tests were conducted to obtain heat transfer coefficients during slush formation from 10% sucrose solution. The slush was made by scraping the ice formed on the cylinder. Cold brine was supplied inside of the cylinder to cool the outer surface. Below a certain brine temperature, which was $5^{\circ}C$ in this study, the solution was supercooled, and suddenly turned into ice. The super-cooling increases as the brine temperature increased. During slush formation, the heat transfer coefficient oscillated significantly, due to periodic removal of ice chunk form the surface. The average heat transfer coefficient during slush formation was approximately twice of that obtained during single phase cooling. The heat transfer coefficient was also affected by the brine temperature with increasing heat transfer coefficient at lower brine temperature.

  • Heat transfer performance of integral-fin tube which is used in recipro turbo refrigerator or high compact heat exchangers is studied. Eight tubes with trapezoidal shaped integral-fins having fin densities from 748 to 1654 fpm and 10, 30 internal grooves are tested. A plain tube having the same(inner and outer) diameter as the fin tubes is also tested for comparison. Pool boiling heat transfer of R-11 is investigated experimentally and theoretically on single tube arrangement. The refrigerant evaporates at saturation state of 1 bar on the outside tube surface and heat is supplied by not water which circulates inside of the tube. From the result of eight fin tubes and one plain tube tested, a tube having 1299 fpm-30 grooves shows the best performance. A maximum overall heat transfer coefficient of this tube is about 4000 $W/m^{2}K$ at 2.8m/s of water velocity. The maximum heat transfer enhancement (i.e., the ratio of overall heat transfer coefficients of finned to plain tubes)is about 2.1.

  • By using unique experimental techniques and careful construction of the experimental apparatus, the characteristics of the local heat transfer were investigated using the condensing R134a two-phase flow, in horizontal single mini-channels. The circular channels ($D_h=0.493$, 0.691, and 1.067 mm) and rectangular channels ($D_h=0.494$, 0.658, and 0.972 mm) were tested and compared. Tests were performed for a mass flux of 100, 200, 400, and 600 $kg/m^2s$, a heat flux of 5 to 20 $kW/m^2$, and a saturation temperature of $40^{\circ}C$. In this study, effect of heat flux, mass flux, vapor qualities, hydraulic diameter, and channel geometry on flow condensation were investigated and the experimental local condensation heat transfer coefficients are shown. The experimental data of condensation Nusselt number are compared with existing correlations.

  • Experiments have been conducted to measure the overall heat transfer coefficient for gas-solid fluidized double pipe heat exchanger with finned tube. The average particle diameters of alumina are used in 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 and 0.9mm. And the effects of average particle diameter, static bed height and flow velocity on overall heat transfer coefficient have been investigated. Also the heat transfer effect of fluidized bed was compared with that of single phase forced convection and that of heat exchanger with smooth tube.

  • In order to obtain a new heat transfer fluid having a high thermal capacity, micro-capsules of a phase-change material can be a successful candidate to be added into water. In this study, 25, 50, 100, and $200\mu$m diameter micro-encapsulated Lauric acids were tested by a differential scanning calorimeter. The Lauric acid itself had a single freezing curve, but the micro-encapsulated Lauric acid had double freezing curves. The second freezing dominated for $25\mu$m diameter Lauric acids. But the first freeing energy became big as the size of the capsule increased.

The Heat Transfer and Pressure drop Characteristics of R7l8 in Small Diameter Tubes (세관내 액단상의 열전달과 압력강하에 관한 연구)

  • The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of R718 flowing in smooth horizontal copper tubes with inner diameter of 3.36 mm, 5.35 mm, 6.54 mm and 8.12 mm were investigated. The test section is a counterflow heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and water flowing in the annulus. Experiments were peformed for the flowing range of variables : Reynolds number (1000 to 20000), mass flow rate of brine (450 kg/h) and refrigerant temperature (5$0^{\circ}C$). The main results were summarized as follows : (1) The heat transfer coefficient of 3.36 mm ID was about 10% to 30% higher than that of 5.35 mm, 6.54 mm and 8.12 mm ID, and the heat transfer coefficients for small diameter. tubes are about 20% to 27% higher than these predicted by Gnielinski. The new correlation is proposed to predict the experimental data. (2) As a result of comparison with correlation prosed by Blasius. the deviation of the experimental data slightly increased as the tube diameter decreased. (3) The ratio of heat transfer to friction factor (j/f) correlated by all experimental data increased as the tube diameter decreased.

  • The demand on quantitative measurement of the heat flux is motivated in making higher-quality steel product through a water quenching process of plate mill. To improve a spatial degree of heat flux measurement, the multi-point heat flux measurement was carried out by a unique experimental technique that has a combination of the existing single-point heat flux gauge. The corresponding heat flux can be easily determined by Fourier's law in a conventional way. The multi-point heat flux gauge developed in this study can be applicable to measure the surface heat flux, the surface heat transfer coefficient during a water quenching applications of steelmaking process. The results exhibit different heat transfer regimes; such as single-phase forced convection, nucleate boiling, and film boiling, that are occurred in close proximity on the multi-point heat flux gauge quenched by water impinging jet.
