In evaluating the performance of a dual-hop wireless link, the effects of large and small scale fading has to be considered. To overcome this fading effect, several schemes, such as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with orthogonal space time block codes (OSTBC), different combining schemes at the relay and receiving end, and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) are used in both the transmitting and the relay links. In this paper, we first make compare the performance of a two-hop wireless link under a different combination of space diversity in the first and second hop of the amplify-and-forward (AF) case. Our second task in this paper is to incorporate the weak signal of a direct link and then by applying the channel model of two random variables (one for a direct link and another for a relayed link) we get very impressive result at a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) that is comparable with other models at a higher SNR. Our third task is to bring other three schemes under a two-hop wireless link: use of transmit antenna selection (TAS) on both link with weak direct link, distributed Alamouti scheme in two-hop link and single relay antenna with OFDM subcarrier. Finally, all of the schemes mentioned above are compared to select the best possible model. The main finding of the paper is as follows: the use of MIMO on both hops but application TAS on both links with weak direct link and the full rate OFDM with the sub-carrier for an individual link provide a better result as compared to other models.

In this paper, a radio resource allocation scheme for a multi-hop relay transmission in cognitive radio (CR) system is proposed to support the employment of relay nodes in IEEE 802.22 standard for wireless regional area network (WRAN). An optimization problem is formulated to maximize the number of serving secondary users (SUs) under system constraints such as time-divided frame structure for multiplexing and a single resource-unit to every relay-hop. However, due to mathematical complexity, the optimization problem is solved with a sub-optimal manner instead, which takes three steps in the order of user selection, relay/path selection, and frequency selection. In the numerical analysis, this proposed solution is evaluated in terms of service rate denoting as the ratio of the number of serving SUs to the number of service-requesting SUs. Simulation results show the condition of adopting multi-hop relay and the optimum number of relaying hops by comparing with the performance of 1-hop system.
During meiosis, exchange of DNA segments occurs between paired homologous chromosomes in order to produce recombinant chromosomes, helping to increase genetic diversity within a species. This genetic exchange process is tightly controlled by the eukaryotic RecA homologs Rad51 and Dmc1, which are involved in strand exchange of meiotic recombination, with Rad51 participating specifically in mitotic recombination. Meiotic recombination requires an interaction between homologous chromosomes to repair programmed double-strand breaks (DSBs). In this study, we investigated the budding yeast meiosis-specific proteins Hop2 and Sae3, which function in the Dmc1-dependent pathway. This pathway mediates the homology searching and strand invasion processes. Mek1 kinase participates in switching meiotic recombination from sister bias to homolog bias after DSB formation. In the absence of Hop2 and Sae3, DSBs were produced normally, but showed defects in the DSB-to-single-end invasion transition mediated by Dmc1 and auxiliary factors, and mutant strains failed to complete proper chromosome segregation. However, in the absence of Mek1 kinase activity, Rad51-dependent recombination progressed via sister bias in the $hop2{\Delta}$ or $sae3{\Delta}$ mutants, even in the presence of Dmc1. Thus, Hop2 and Sae3 actively modulate Dmc1-dependent recombination, effectively progressing homolog bias, a process requiring Mek1 kinase activation.
This paper proposes a dynamic timeout scheduling for energy efficient and accurate aggregation by analyzing the single hop delay in wireless sensor networks based on IEEE 802.15.4. The proposed scheme dynamically configures the timeout value depending on both the number of nodes sharing a channel and the type of wireless media, with considering the results of delay analysis of the single hop delay. The timeout of proposed scheme is much smaller than the maximum single hop delay which is used as the timeout of traditional data aggregation schemes. Therefore the proposed scheme considerably reduces the energy consumption of idle monitoring for waiting messages. Also, the proposed scheme maintains the data accuracy by guaranteeing the reception ratio required by the sensor network applications. Extensive simulation has revealed that proposed scheme enhances energy consumption by 30% with maintaining data accuracy, as compared with the TAG data aggregation.
In this paper the Dynamic Minislot Reservation Protocol(DMRP) in which the control channel is divided into contention-less and contention minislots in order to reduce re-transmission probability in multicasting is proposed. In the network, earth node has two pairs of transceivers. A transceiver consisting of a fixed transmitter and a fixed receiver is used to control packet registration and the other transceiver is used to transmit data. Two types f transceivers for data transmission are considered : one is FT-TR(Fixed Transmitter-Tunable Receiver) and the other is TT-TR(Tunable Transmitter-Tunable Receiver). In the analysis, FT-TR and TT-TR single-hop passive star networks are compared. As results, we conclude that the DMRP protocol with dynamically divided control channel has improved the system performance such as throughput and system delay regardless of traffic type or network structure.

A new multi-channel access scheme and the associated network architecture for a single-hop WDM local area network is proposed in this paper. The proposed architecture has Central Scheduling Node (CSN) for the transmission coordination among many users, which is one of the key issues in single-hop WDM networks. The data channels, source nodes, and destination nodes are selected at CSN in very simple menner. Our scheme can relive the control processing overhead at all nodes in the network which is caused in existing distributed scheduling algorithms. CSN is simple in the architecture can be implemented easily. in respect to the network performance, the maximum obtainable throughput is up to that of the ideal output queuing because of collision free scheduling. We use the MQMS (multi-queue multi-server) model for performance analaysis.

The IEEE802.16j standard uses non-transparent relay stations to extend coverage. There are two types of non-transparent relay modes, that is, the time-division transmit and receive (TTR) relay mode which can operate with one of two types of frame structures, a single-frame and multiframe structure, and the simultaneous transmit and receive (STR) relay mode. In this paper, we analyze the relay performance of TTR and STR relay modes in IEEE 802.16j MMR system. We also propose a fair resource allocation scheme for the downlink relay frame. Numerical results show that relay performance of the TTR with a single-frame or a multiframe structure and that of the STR relay modes are almost the same in a two-hop system. However, in a three-hop system, the TTR mode with a single-frame structure outperforms other relay modes.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of three functional performance tests and one-legged hop test and to establish the reference data of the three functional performance tests of the active young Korean men. Materials and methods: We performed five tests on 40 normal subjects such as one-legged hop test (single hop, triple hop) and the three functional performance tests (carioca test, co-contraction test, shuttle run test). The mean age was 28.4 years. The mean score of Tegner activity scale was 6.2 and Lysholm score 98.2 Mean value and standard deviation were obtained. The correlation of age, height and weight with the results, the relationship between FPT and one-legged hop test and the mean difference between dominant and non-dominant limbs were statistically calculated. Results: All data obtained were normally distributed and there were no significant relationship between age, height and weight. The paired t-test of one legged hop test showed no statistical significance between dominant and non-dominant limbs. The results of one legged hop test had strong relationship with functional performance test. Conclusion; The three functional performance tests can be a useful functional test in ACL-insufficient athletes. Our results can be used as normal reference data of the normal active Korean men.
Wireless smart sensor networks (WSSNs) have been proposed by a number of researchers to evaluate the current condition of civil infrastructure, offering improved understanding of dynamic response through dense instrumentation. As focus moves from laboratory testing to full-scale implementation, the need for multi-hop communication to address issues associated with the large size of civil infrastructure and their limited radio power has become apparent. Multi-hop communication protocols allow sensors to cooperate to reliably deliver data between nodes outside of direct communication range. However, application specific requirements, such as high sampling rates, vast amounts of data to be collected, precise internodal synchronization, and reliable communication, are quite challenging to achieve with generic multi-hop communication protocols. This paper proposes two complementary reliable multi-hop communication solutions for monitoring of civil infrastructure. In the first approach, termed herein General Purpose Multi-hop (GPMH), the wide variety of communication patterns involved in structural health monitoring, particularly in decentralized implementations, are acknowledged to develop a flexible and adaptable any-to-any communication protocol. In the second approach, termed herein Single-Sink Multi-hop (SSMH), an efficient many-to-one protocol utilizing all available RF channels is designed to minimize the time required to collect the large amounts of data generated by dense arrays of sensor nodes. Both protocols adopt the Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol, which provides any-to-any routing and multi-cast capability, and supports a broad range of communication patterns. The proposed implementations refine the routing metric by considering the stability of links, exclude functionality unnecessary in mostly-static WSSNs, and integrate a reliable communication layer with the AODV protocol. These customizations have resulted in robust realizations of multi-hop reliable communication that meet the demands of structural health monitoring.
In this paper, we study the role of cooperative relays to provide and improve secure communication rates through decodeand-forward (DF) strategies in a full-duplex multiple relay network with an eavesdropper. We consider the DF scheme as a basis for cooperation and propose several strategies that implement different versions of this scheme suited for cooperation with multiple relays. Our goal is to give an efficient cooperation paradigm based on the DF scheme to provide and improve secrecy in a multiple relay network. We first study the DF strategy for secrecy in a single relay network. We propose a suboptimal DF with zero forcing (DF/ZF) strategy for which we obtain the optimal power control policy. Next, we consider the multiple relay problem. We propose three different strategies based on DF/ZF and obtain their achievable secrecy rates. The first strategy is a single hop strategy whereas the other two strategies are multiple hop strategies. In the first strategy, we show that it is possible to eliminate all the relays' signals from the eavesdropper's observation (full ZF), however, the achievable secrecy rate is limited by the worst source-relay channel. Our second strategy overcomes the drawback of the first strategy, however, with the disadvantage of enabling partial ZF only. Our third strategy provides a reasonable compromise between the first two strategies. That is, in this strategy, full ZF is possible and the rate achieved does not suffer from the drawback of the first strategy. We conclude our study by a set of numerical results to illustrate the performance of each of the proposed strategies in terms of the achievable rates in different practical scenarios.
