This paper reviews the studies on the pressure drop and the heat transfer in microchannels. Although a lot of studies about the single-phase flow have been done until now, conflicting results are occasionally reported about flow transition from laminar flow to turbulent flow, friction factor, and Nusselt number. Some studies reported the early flow transition due to relatively greater wall effect like surface roughness, but the other studies showed that the flow transition occurred at the Reynolds number of about 2300 and the early flow transition might be due to less accurate measurement of the channel geometry. Also, there have been arguments whether the conventional relation based upon continuum theory can be applied to the fluid flow and the heat transfer in microchannels without modification or not. The studies about the two-phase flow in microchannels have been mostly about investigating the flow pattern and the pressure drop in rectangular channels using two-component, two-phase flow like air/water mixture. Some studies proposed correlations to predict two-phase flow pressure drop in microchannels. They were mostly based on Lockhart-Martinelli model with modification on C-coefficient, which was dependent on channel geometry, Reynolds number, surface tension, and so on. Others investigated the characteristics of flow boiling heat transfer in microchannels with respect to test parameters such as mass flux, heat flux, system pressure, and so on. The existing studies have not been fully satisfactory in providing consistent results about the pressure drop and the heat transfer in microchannels. Therefore, more in-depth studies should be done for understanding the fundamentals of the transport phenomena in the microchannels and giving the basic guidelines to design the micro devices.
Single-phase heat transfer performance and pressure drop for internally grooved tubes with angles were studied. Experiments were carried out in a counter flow heat exchanger with water as a working fluid. Two commercially available internally grooved tubes and smooth tube were tested. The internal diameter of the smooth tube was 16.5mm and the internal diameters of grooved tubes were 15.4mm, 14.9mm, 15.0mm, 16.7mm, respectively. Grooved angles in the tubes were $37^{\circ},\;43^{\circ},\;45^{\circ},\;50^{\circ}$, respectively. An experimental device to measure the friction factor and heat transfer coefficient was constructed. The experimental results were obtained for the fully developed turbulent flow of water in tube on the condition of uniform heat flux. As the increase of flow rate, Reynolds number, numbers of groove and grooved angle led to the increase of pressure drop. Also this paper showed that heat transfer rate increased with increasing numbers of groove and grooved angle. An empirical relation taken from this study represented most of the data within ${\pm}25%$.
In this study, three-dimensional numerical calculations are peformed to simulate the flow and heat transfer in helically coiled tube steam generator employing a commercial CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code. The problem considered herein includes the boiling phase change flow of tube side fluid and the single-phase counter-current flow of shell side hot fluid transferring heat to the tube side flow thru the tube wall. Detailed investigations are performed for both shell-side and tube-side flow fields in terms of density and volume fractions of each phase of fluids as well as for the tube wall heat transfer field in terms of heat transfer coefficients.
Experiments were performed to characterize single-phase heat transfer behavior of submerged liquid jet with multiple nozzle normally impinging on the smooth and extended surfaces. Arrays of 9 and 36 nozzles were used, with diameters of 0.5 to 2.0mm providing nozzle area ratio (AR) from 0.05 to 0.2. The square pin fin arrays were chosen as extended surfaces and the effects of geometrical parameters such as fin height, the ratio of fin width to channel width on heat transfer enhancement were examined. Single nozzle characteristics were also evaluated for comparison. The results clearly showed that heat transfer enhancement could be realized by using multiple nozzles at the constant volume flow rate. The average Nusselt number of multiple nozzle impingement on the smooth surface was correlated by the following equation : Nu/$Pr\frac{1}{3}=0.94 Re^{0.56}N^{-0.12}AR^{0.50}$The average heat transfer coefficients of multiple nozzle impingement on the extended surfaces decreased with increasing fin height and the ratio of fin width to channel width. The effectiveness of ex-tended surfaces ranged from 1.5 to 3.5 depending on the fin height, the ratio of fin width to channel width of pin fin arrays, nozzle number and nozzle area ratio.
Many investigations have been made to determine the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics for single phase flow in tape generated swirl flow. But few studies have been carried out to investigate the heat transfer in two component, two phase swirl flow with non-boiling. An experimental study has been conducted to determine the effects of tape twist ratios on two phase convective heat transfer coefficients, pressure drop, and void fraction distribution in a non-boiling, air-water, two phase flow. The flow conditions were both swirl and non swirl flows. The internal diameter of the test section is 42.5mm. The tape twist ratios of pitch to diameter ratio varied from 4.0 to 10.6. The heating conditions were isothermal and nonisothermal. The flow patterns identified with experiments were bubbly, bubbly-slug, slug, and slug-annular flow in up-flow. This study has concluded that no significant difference in void fraction distribution were observed both isothermal and nonisothermal conditions, the pressure drop for two phase flow with twisted tape swirler increase as the tape twist ratio decrease, and that values of two phase heat transfer coefficient increase when the tape twist ratio decreases.
Two-phase flow and heat transfer characteristics during the reflood phase of a single heated rod in the KHU reflood experimental facility were examined. Two-phase flow behavior during the reflooding experiment was carefully visualized along with transient temperature measurement at a point inside the heated rod. By numerically solving one-dimensional inverse heat conduction equation using the measured temperature data, time-resolved wall heat flux and temperature histories at the interface of the heated rod and coolant were obtained. Once water coolant was injected into the test section from the bottom to reflood the heated rod of >700℃, vast vapor bubbles and droplets were generated near the reflood front and dispersed flow film boiling consisted of continuous vapor flow and tiny liquid droplets appeared in the upper part. Following the dispersed flow film boiling, inverted annular/slug/churn flow film boiling regimes were sequentially observed and the wall temperature gradually decreased. When so-called minimum film boiling temperature reached, the stable vapor film between the heated rod and coolant was suddenly collapsed, resulting in the quenching transition from film boiling into nucleate boiling. The moving speed of the quench front measured in the present study showed a good agreement with prediction by a correlation in literature. The obtained results revealed that typical two-phase flow and heat transfer behaviors during the reflood phase of overheated fuel rods in light water nuclear reactors are well reproduced in the KHU facility. Thus, the verified reflood experimental facility can be used to explore the effects of other affecting parameters, such as CRUD, on the reflood heat transfer behaviors in practical nuclear reactors.
This experimental study measured and analyzed the heat transfer and pressure drop performance of brazed plate heat exchangers. Heat exchangers with different plate numbers of 10, 20, 30, and 40 were used for measurement, and their plate pattern was identical. The experiment was performed with distilled water, by changing the hot-side flow rate, with the cold-side flow rate fixed. The experimental results were compared with the calculated values by correlations based on gasketed plate heat exchangers, and showed that the heat transfer performance and pressure drop of brazed plated heat exchangers were higher than those of gasketed plate heat exchangers. From the variation of the friction factor, it could be inferred that in the flow channels of brazed plate heat exchangers, turbulent flow occurred at Reynolds numbers higher than 500. A new correlation to predict the Nusselt number was developed, and its absolute average deviation was 2.62%, compared with the values from the experimental data.
Single-phase convection and nucleate boiling heat transfer were locally investigated for confined planar water jets. The detailed distributions of the wall temperature and the convection coefficient as well as the typical boiling curves were discussed. The curve for the single-phase convection indicated the developing laminar boundary layer, accompanied by monotonic increase of the wall temperature in the stream direction. Boiling was initiated from the furthest downstream as heat flux increased. Heat transfer variation according to the streamwise location was reduced as heat flux increased enough to create the vigorous nucleate boiling. Velocity effects were considered for the confined free-surface jet. Higher velocity of the jet caused the boiling incipient to be delayed more. The transition to turbulence precipitated by the bubble-induced disturbance was obvious only for the highest velocity, which enabled the boiling incipient to start in the middle of the heated surface, rather than the furthest downstream as was the case of the moderate and low velocities. The temperature at offset line were somewhat tower than those at the centerline for single-phase convection and partial boiling, and these differences were reduced as the nucleate boiling developed. For the region prior to transition, the convection coefficient distributions were similar in both cases while the temperatures were somewhat lower in the submerged jet. For single-phase convection, transition was initiated at $x/W{\cong}2.5$ and completed soon for the submerged jet, but the onset of transition was retarded to the distance at $x/W{\cong}6$ for the fee-surface jet.
This paper presents a new approach regarding thermal characteristics associated with a design of the high efficiency motor. The adjoint variable design sensitivity equations for both electromagnetics with respect to permeability and heat transfer considering conduction and convection terms are derived using the continuum method. For multi-objective topology optimization, FEA is validated in terms of electromagnetics and heat transfer by experiments. The proposed method is applied to a single-phase induction motor of the scroll compressor in order to control the direction of heat flow by maximizing/minimizing the temperature of the target area while maintaining the efficiency.
