A novel hybrid carrier-based pulse width modulation (CBPWM) scheme that combines unipolar and dipolar modulations is proposed for single-phase three-level rectifiers, which are widely applied in railway traction drive systems. The proposed CBPWM method can satisfy the volt-second balancing principle in the complete modulation index region through overmodulation compensation. The modulation scheme features two modulation modes: unipolar and dipolar. The operation range limits of these modulation modes can be modified by changing the separation coefficient. In comparison with the traditional unipolar CBPWM, the proposed hybrid CBPWM scheme can provide advantageous features, such as lower high-order harmonic distortion of the line current and better utilization of switching frequency. The separation coefficient value is optimized to achieve the maximum utilization of these advantages. The experimental results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed hybrid CBPWM scheme.
The purpose of a solar tracking system (STS) is to control the attitude of a space vehicle so that it will track the sun with high accuracy. In this paper, the literature of tracking of the sun in a plane is surveyed and a control modeling for the analysis of STS is presented by simultaneous transfer functions and state-space equations. Also a program for obtaining state variables by the single term Walsh series(STWS) approach is developed. The proposed approach is much simpler in analysis and easier in implementation than the Runge-Kutta numerical integration Method. The results of computer simulation are shown for the dynamic behaviors of vehicle axis, armature-controlled dc motor and controller of STS via a Runge-Kutta method and a single term Walsh series approach, respectively.
A unit-load automated guided vehicle system is considered in which a single vehicle is operated on a unidirectional path in a closed loop. The vehicle serves a manufacturing cell moving pallets from one station to another based on the "First-Encountered-First-Serve" dispatching rule. An approximation method is developed to compute the mean waiting time of an arbitrary pallet at each station. Extensive numerical experiments, performed for various problems, yield fairly good results in most of the cases compared with those obtained by simulation method.
The vehicle emissions of primary air pollutants are described by the emission factor (EF), defined as the emitted mass (g) of a compound per distance (km) and vehicle. The EF can be determined by exhaust measurements from single vehicles in dynamometric tests. However, the EF of a large number of vehicles has to be measured to obtain the representative results for actual road traffic emissions. Road traffic emissions can also be determined by exhaust measurements of driving vehicles or in tunnel measurements. (omitted)

Tracking the location (position) of a surface or underwater marine vehicle is important as part of guidance and navigation. While the Global Positioning System (GPS) works well in an open sea environment but its use is limited whenever testing scaled-down models of such vehicles in the laboratory environment. This paper presents the design, development and implementation of a low energy ultrasonic augmented single beacon-based localization technique suitable for such requirements. The strategy consists of applying Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to achieve location tracking from basic dynamic distance measurements of the moving model from a fixed beacon, while on-board motion sensor measures heading angle and velocity. Iterative application of the Extended Kalman Filter yields x and y co-ordinate positions of the moving model. Tests performed on a free-running ship model in a wave basin facility of dimension 30 m by 30 m by 3 m water depth validate the proposed model. The test results show quick convergence with an error of few centimeters in the estimated position of the ship model. The proposed technique has application in the real field scenario by replacing the ultrasonic sensor with industrial grade long range acoustic modem. As compared with the existing systems such as LBL, SBL, USBL and others localization techniques, the proposed technique can save deployment cost and also cut the cost on number of acoustic modems involved.
This paper describes a multiple vehicle tracking algorithm using an integrated probabilistic data association filter (IPDAF) in urban environments. The algorithm consists of two parts; a pre-processing stage and an IPDA tracker. In the pre-processing stage, measurements are generated by a feature extraction method that manipulates raw data into predefined geometric features of vehicles as lines and boxes. After that, the measurements are divided into two different objects, dynamic and static objects, by using information of ego-vehicle motion. The IPDA tracker estimates not only states of tracks but also existence probability recursively. The existence probability greatly assists reliable initiation and termination of track in cluttered environment. The algorithm was validated by using experimental data which is collected in urban environment by using single laser scanner.
Due to recent improvements in computer processing speed and image processing technology, researches are being actively carried out to combine information from a camera with existing GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and dead reckoning. In this study, the mathematical model based on SPR (Single Photo Resection) is derived for image-based assistant algorithm for vehicle positioning. Simulation test is performed to analyze factors affecting SPR. In addition, GNSS/on-board vehicle sensor/image based positioning algorithm is developed by combining image-based positioning algorithm with existing positioning algorithm. The performance of the integrated algorithm is evaluated by the actual driving test and landmark's position data, which is required to perform SPR, based on simulation. The precision of the horizontal position error is 1.79m in the case of the existing positioning algorithm, and that of the integrated positioning algorithm is 0.12m at the points where SPR is performed. In future research, it is necessary to develop an optimized algorithm based on the actual landmark's position data.
Generally, a single phase H-bridge converter feeding a single primary track is employed in conventional inductive power transfer systems. However, these systems may not be suitable for some high power applications due to the constraints of the semiconductor switches and the cost. To resolve this problem, a novel dual coupled primary tracks IPT system consisting of two high frequency resonant inverters feeding the tracks is presented in this paper. The primary tracks are wound around an E-shape ferrite core in parallel which enhances the magnetic flux around the tracks. The mutual inductance of the coupled tracks is utilized to achieve adjustable power sharing between the inverters by configuring the additional resonant capacitors. The total transfer power can be continuously regulated by altering the pulse width of the inverters' output voltage with the phase shift control approach. In addition, the system's efficiency and the control strategy are provided to analyze the characteristic of the proposed IPT system. An experimental setup with total power of 1.4kW is employed to verify the proposed system under power ratios of 1:1 and 1:2 with a transfer efficiency up to 88.7%. The results verify the performance of the proposed system.
