The fault monitoring technique is presented for identifying the status of the agitator driving system in thermal reduction reactor. For identifying a fault such as bearing defect or clearance blocking, Wavelet transform (WT) is applied to vibration signals and features are extracted. For classification, the fuzzy ARTMAP is employed. With the features from WT, a single training epoch and a single learning iteration are sufficient for the fuzzy ARTMAP to classify the faults. The test results show the perfect classification though some features extracted from the test data are distorted against those in the training data

Friction factor and two-phase flow frictional multiplier for a CANFLEX bundle are newly developed and presented in this paper. CANFLEX as a 43-element fuel bundle has been developed jointly by AECL/KAERI to provide greater operational flexibility for CANDU reactor operators and designers. Friction factor and two-phase flow frictional multiplier have been developed by using the experimental data of pressure drops obtained from two series of Freon-l34a (R-134a) CHF tests with a string of simulated CANFLEX bundles in a single phase and a two-phase flow conditions. The friction factor for a CANFLRX bundle is found to be about 20 % higher than that of Blasius for a smooth circular pipe. The pressure drop predicted by using the new correlations of friction factor and two-phase frictional multiplier are well agreed with the experimental pressure drop data of CANFLEX bundle within ${\pm}\;5\;%$ error.
Comparative analysis of driving inverters for piezo-electric transformer (PT) is performed and the suit- able drive circuit for portable devices such as personal digital assistants (PDA) is chosen with the experiment in this paper. As a result, a single-switch inverter with a small two winding reactor is chosen, and then the advantages of this method are clarified. It is also confirmed that the driving inverter with this method enables to realize a stabilized AC 400v output and 82% power efficiency from DC 3V input under the conditions of the variations of load current or input voltage from the experiments. We reports improved monitoring performance of Self plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (SP-OES) by augmenting a by-pass tube to a conventional straight (or single) tube type self plasma reactor. SP-OES has been used as a tool for the monitoring of plasma chemistry indirectly in plasma process system. The benefits of SP-OES are low cost and easy installation, but some semiconductor industries who adopted commercialized SP-OES product experiencing less sensitivity and slow sensor response. OH out-gas chemistry monitoring was performed to have a direct comparison of a conventional single type tube and a by-pass type tube, and fluid dynamic simulation on the improved hardware design was also followed. It is observed faster pumping out of OH from the chamber in the by-pass type SP-OES.

Dehydrogenation from the hydrolysis of a sodium borohydride ($NaBH_4$) solution has been of interest owing to its high theoretical hydrogen storage capacity (10.8 wt.%) and potentially safe operation. An experimental study has been performed on the catalytic reaction rate and pressure drop of a $NaBH_4$ solution over both a single microchannel with a hydraulic diameter of $300{\mu}m$ and a staggered array of micro pin fins in the microchannel with hydraulic diameter of $50{\mu}m$. The catalytic reaction rates and pressure drops were obtained under Reynolds numbers from 1 to 60 and solution concentrations from 5 to 20 wt.%. Moreover, reacting flows were visualized using a high-speed camera with a macro zoom lens. As a result, both the amount of hydrogenation and pressure drop are 2.45 times and 1.5 times larger in a pin fin microchannel array than in a single microchannel, respectively.
Two different MFC designs were evaluated in batch mode: single compartment combined membrane-electrodes (SCME) design and twin-compartment brush-type anode electrodes (TBE) design (single chamber with two air cathodes and brush anodes at each side of the reactor). In SCME MFC, carbon anode and cathode electrodes were assembled with a proton exchange membrane (PEM). TBE MFC was consisted of brush-type anode and carbon cloth cathode electrodes without the PEM. A brush-type anode was fabricated with carbon fibers and was placed close to the cathode electrode to reduce the internal resistance. Substrates used in this study were glucose, leachate from cattle manure, or sucrose at different concentrations with phosphate buffer solution (PBS) of 200 mM to increase the conductivity thereby reduce the internal resistance. Hydrogen generating bacteria (HGB) were only inoculated in TBE MFC. The peak power densities ($P_{peak}$) produced from the SCME systems fed with glucose and leachate were 18.8 and $28.7mW/m^2$ at external loads of 1000 ohms, respectively. And the $P_{peak}$ produced from TBE MFC were 40.1 and $18.3mW/m^2$ at sucrose concentration of 5 g/L and external loads of 470 ohms, with a mediator (2-hydroxy-1, 4-naphthoquinone) and without the mediator, respectively. The maximum power density ($P_{max}$) produced from mediator present TBE MFC was $115.3mW/m^2$ at 47 ohms of an external resistor.

We investigated the analysis of operation mode of three-phase flux-lake type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL). The structure of the integrated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL consisted of three-phase flux-lock reactor wound on an iron core with the same turn between coil 1 and coil 2 in each phase. When the SFCL is operated under the normal condition, the flux generated in the iron core is zero because the flux generated between two coils of each single phase is canceled out. Therefore, the SFCL's impedance is zero and the SFCL has negligible influence on the power system, However, if a fault occurs in any single-phase among three phases, the flux generated in the iron core is not zero any more. The flux makes elements of all phase-quench irrespective of the fault type, which reduces the current of fault phase as well as the current of sound phase.
A Nonlinear model-based Hybrid Controller (NHC) is developed which consists of the adaptive proportional-integral-feedforward (PIF) gains and variable structure controller. The controller has the robustness against modeling uncertainty and is applied to the trajectory tracking control of single-input, single-output nonlinear systems. The essence of the scheme is to divide the control into four different terms. Namely, the adaptive P-I-F gains and variable structure controller are used to accomplish the specific control actions by each terms. The robustness of the controller is guaranteed by the feedback of estimated uncertainty and the performance specification given by the adaptation of PIF gains using the second method of Lyapunov. The variable structure controller is incorporated to regulate the initial peak of the tracking error during the parameter adaptation is not settled yet. The newly developed NHC method is applied to the power tracking control of a nuclear reactor and the simulation results show great improvement in tracking performance compared with the conventional model-based control methods.

Dimethyl ether (DME) is a new clean fuel as an environmentally-benign energy resource. DME can be manufactured from various energy sources including natural gas, coal, and biomass. In addition to its environmentally friendly properties, DME has similar characteristics to those of LPG. The aim of this article is to represent the development of new DME process with KOGAS's own technologies. KOGAS has investigated and developed new innovative DME synthesis process from synthesis gas in gaseous phase fixed bed reactor. DME has been traditionally produced by the dehydration of methanol which is produced from syngas, a product of natural gas reforming. This traditional process is thus called the two-step method of preparing DME. However, DME can also be manufactured directly from syngas (single-step). The single-step method needs only one reactor for the synthesis of DME, instead of two for the two-step process. It can also alleviate the thermodynamic limitations associated with the synthesis of methanol, by converting the produced methanol into DME, thereby potentially enhancing the overall conversion of syngas into DME. KOGAS had launched the 10 ton/day DME demonstration plant project in 2004 at Incheon KOGAS LNG terminal. In the mid of 2008, KOGAS had finished the construction of this plant and has successively finished the demonstration plant operation. And since 2008, we have established the basic design of commercial plant which can produce 3,000 ton/day DME.
As the single chamber SOFC(SC-SOFC) showed higher prospect on reducing the operation temperature as well as offering higher design flexibility of SOFCs, lots of concerns have been given to investigate the catalytic activity of perovskite-type oxide in mixed fuel and oxidant conditions. Hence we thoroughly investigated the catalytic property of various perovskite-type oxides such as $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}MnO_3(LSM),\;La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}CoO_3(LSC),\;La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_3(LSCF),\;Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_3(SSC),\;and\;Ba_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}Co_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}(BSCF)$ under the partial oxidation condition of methane which used to be given for SC-SOFC operation. In this study, powder form of each perovskite oxides whose surface areas were controlled to be equal, were investigated as functions of methane to oxygen ratios and reactor temperature. XRD, BET and SEM were employed to characterize the crystalline phase, surface area and microstructure of prepared powders before and after the catalytic oxidation. According to the gas phase analysis with flow-through type reactor and gas chromatography system, LSC, SSC, and LSCF showed higher catalytic activity at fairly lower temperature around $400^{\circ}C{\sim}450^{\circ}C$ whereas LSM and BSCF could be activated at much higher temperature above $600^{\circ}C$.
