Characteristics of the Droplet Behavior in the Overlap Region of Twin Spray and in Single Spray (이중분무의 중첩영역과 단일분무에서 액적의 거동 특성)

  • The objectives of this study was to investigate the spray characteristics of single spray and twin spray in the overlap region such as mean axial velocity, mean radial velocity, mean droplet size and probability density function of droplet size. A phase doppler anemometer was used as the measurement system for droplet size and velocity. In case of single spray, injection pressure was varied from 0.2MPa to 0.7MPa. Mean axial velocity, mean radial velocity and droplet size were decreased as the distance below nozzle tip was increased. In case of twin spray, the spray characteristics were measured by varying the distance between two nozzles from 127mm to 155mm. In the overlap region, the boundary of the overlap region was determined by obtaining the distribution of mean axial and radial velocity. Droplet size was increased as the distance from nozzle tip was increased. It was found that the distribution of droplet size for twin spray in the overlap region was different to single spray.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the flow characteristics of the multi nozzle. The configurations of the single, the 3- and the 6-nozzle were selected under Mach number of 2.5. Under-expanded pressure ratio such as 1.2, 1.6 and 2.0 were selected to elucidate interference of the free jet. The flow visualization was carried out with the Schlieren system and a supersonic cold-flow system. Also, the flow characteristics were studied computationally with the density measurements. Reasonable agreement between experimental and theoric equation has been achieved qualitatively.

  • A computational analysis has been conducted on the compressible flow in the turbine exhaust nozzle of the gas generator cycle liquid rocket engine. The commercial CFD code Fluent has been used. Four nozzle designs have been compared to select the turbine exhaust nozzle concept. Three candidates with single nozzle have comparable performance. The model with bifurcated nozzles shows significant performance loss. However it will be better in the view of balanced thrust distribution because of its symmetric geometry.

  • The combustion process and the performance of a diesel engine are considerably affected by the characteristics of fuel spray. It is known that the spray of swirl nozzle for diesel engine injector of small orifice ratio becomes soft spray that has no core, therefore its penetration, one of the characteristics of spray becomes werse inspite of its good dispersion. In this paper, the spray characteristics of variously designed swirl nozzle for diesel injector were investigated by the photographic method. The nozzles, used in this experiment, vary in the diameter of swirl chambers and orifice ratio. From the results of the study, the sprays of this type nozzle of optimum swirl chamber and orifice ratio show that penetration decreased slightly but dispersion and spray volume increased remarcably, compared with unswirled single hole nozzle of the same size. It was suggested as a reason for the results, that the spray of this type swirl nozzle is similar to hard spray, therefore the core of the spray sustains good penetration considerably.

  • Single Stage To Orbit (SSTO) missions which require its engines to be operated at varying back pressure conditions, use engines operate at high combustion chamber pressures (more than 100bar) with moderate area ratios (AR 70~80). This ensures that the exhaust jet flows full during most part of the operational regimes by optimal expansion at each altitude. Aero-spike nozzle is a kind of altitude adaptation nozzle where requirement of high combustion chamber pressures can be avoided as the flow is adapted to the outside conditions by the virtue of the nozzle configuration. However, the thrust prediction using the conventional thrust equations remains to be a challenge as the nozzle plume shapes vary with the back pressure conditions. In the present work, the performance evaluation of a new aero-spike nozzle is being carried out. Computational studies are carried out to predict the thrust generated by the aero-spike nozzle in varying back pressure conditions which requires the unsteady pressure boundary conditions in the computational domain. Schlieren pictures are taken to validate the computational results. It is found that the flow in the aero-spike nozzle is mainly affected by the base wall pressure variation. The aerospike nozzle exhibits maximum performance in the properly expanded flow regime due to the open wake formation.

  • Experiments have been carried out to study the atomisation characteristics of superheated liquid(water) jet injected into the atmosphere through a single-hole nozzle. In present experi-mental range, superheated liquid jet has been observed to be atomised in two-phase effluent type; that is, spray formed by the bubble nucleation in the nozzle. In case of liquid injection through a long nozzle (L/D=29.09), the critical superheat for occurrence of two-phase effluent atomisa-tion can be determined from sudden change of spray angle. Sauter mean diameter of the spray droplets decreases as the degree of superheat increases. For the short nozzle (L/D=7.27), mean diameter increases with the injection pressure, while it decreases for the long nozzle; however for the long nozzle the effect of injection pressure is not significant compared with the short nozzle. For the short nozzle the uniformity of drop size distribution increases with increasing the degree of superheat, but for the long nozzle the effect of superheat on the uniformity is not appreciable.

  • Characteristic of turbulent nonpremixed interacting flames are investigated experimentally 8 or 9 nozzles are arranged in the shape of matrix or circle. When there is no center nozzle, flame is more stable than with center nozzle case. It is shown that these blowout limit enlargements are related with the recirculation of burnt gases. The interacting flame base was not located at the stoichiometric point. NO concentrations of interacting flame are smaller than that of single flame using same area nozzle.

  • A single free jet formed by the interaction of two curved wall jets on a Cylinder surface is defined as "the Coanda nozzle jet" in this study. In order to investigate the characteristics of Coanda nozzle jet, an experimental analysis was carried out; measurements of the static pressure distribution on the cylinder surface, the mean velocity profile, the turbulence intensity, and the Reynolds shear stress by using x-type hot-wire probe.ire probe.

  • Flow characteristics of turbulent elliptic jets were experimentally investigated using a single-frame PIV system. A sharp-edged elliptic nozzle with aspect ratio(AR) of 2 was tested and the experimental results were compared with those of circular jet having the same equivalent diameter($D_e$). The Reynolds number based on the nozzle exit velocity and nozzle equivalent diameter was about $1{\times}10^4$. The spreading rate along the major and minor axis are different remarkably. The jet half width along the major axis decreases at first and then increases with going downstream. But along the minor axis the jet width increases steadily. The elliptic jet of AR=2 has one switching points at $X/D_e=2$ within the near field. Turbulence properties are also found to be significantly different along the major and minor axis planes.

Analysis of Spray Characteristics of Tractor-mounted Boom Sprayer for Precise Spraying

  • Purpose: This study determines the spray characteristics and effective spray width of a tractor-mounted commercial boom sprayer through experiments. Methods: Performance tests were conducted to investigate the spray characteristics of the nozzles on a commercial boom sprayer. The flow rate and spray width of a single nozzle were measured at three levels of spray pressure (0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 MPa) and spray height (15, 30, and 45 cm), respectively. The average value of three repetition tests was used as the representative value. A coefficient of variation (CV) was used as an index of spray uniformity, and the width that guarantees CV values of approximately 15% was determined as the effective spray width. The spray characteristics of the overall boom sprayer were derived analytically by superimposing the spray characteristics of a single nozzle. Results: The test results for a single nozzle showed that the spray width tended to increase as the spray height and spray pressure increased. The effective spray width for a single nozzle was the largest at a spray pressure of 1.0 MPa and spray height of 45 cm, which resulted in a coverage of 84 cm of width. The effective spray width for the entire boom sprayer was also the largest at the spray pressure of 1.0 MPa and spray height of 45 cm, with a magnitude of 424.5 cm. The chemical spraying work in an actual field was simulated by applying a spray width of 400 cm. As a result of the operation for three swaths, the CV value was less than 10% for 1,200 cm of the overall spray width, which meant that uniform application was achieved. Conclusions: It was reasonable to set the effective spray width of the boom sprayer used in this study to 400 cm.
