  • The hydrodynamics and the liquid flow characteristics were investigated in an internal circulation airlift reactor with a single nozzle as a gas distributor. In an air-water system, the gas holdup in the individual flow zone and the impulse-response curve of tracer were measured at various gas velocities and reactor heights. Experimental results showed that for the higher gas velocity(>about 8 cm/s), the flow behavior of bubbles in the riser was turbulent flow due to strong bubble coalescences and the axial height of dispersion zone of large bubbles having uniform sizes in the downcomer was decreased with increasing gas velocity. And mean gas holdups in the individual flow zone and the reactor were increased with increasing gas velocities and were decreased with increasing heights of the top section of the reactor and it was decreased with increasing the height of the top section and gas velocity. Flow characteristics of liquid in the riser and the downcomer was tend to access to plug flow and the overall flow behavior of liquid was mainly varied with the size of the top section which it was assumed to be perfect mixing zone. In these conditions, liquid circulation velocities were increased with increasing gas velocities and they were higher than those by using other gas distributors.

  • Congenital duodenal obstruction in the newborn infant may be due to a variety of causes. Duodenal obstruction often presents with bilious vomiting and upper abdominal distention. Diagnosis is usually established on plain x-ray of the abdomen by the classic finding of the double-bubble. In the period July 1986 to June 1990, 16 patients with congenital duodenal obstruction were operated and the following results were obtained. 1. Sixteen patients were comprised of 11 males and 5 females, the ratio of male and female was 2.2:1. 2. Thirteen patients(81%) had been admitted to our hospital during one month of life. 3. Congenital duodenal obstruction was in 16 cases; malrotation in eight(50%), annular pancreas in six(38%), type 1 atresia in one(6%), and wind-sock anomaly in one(6%). 4. There were two premature patients and six patients of small for gestational age. 5. Overall, bilious vomiting, occurring in three fourths, was the single most frequent presenting complaint. 6. Polyhydramnios occurred in two of the patients. 7. Diagnosis was possible with clinical symptom and simple abdomen. 8. The operative procedures performed were ; duodenoduodenostomy in five, duodenojejunostomy in two, excision of wind-sock membrane in one, and Ladd's procedure in eight. 9. A total of ten asociated congenital anomalies were found in six patients. 10. Postoperative complications occurred in five cases(31%).

  • The authors propose to use the slot system in order to improve of the efficiency for the cambered otter boards. The experiment is divided into 2 parts, one is the efficiency model test, and the other is the visualization model test. The hydrodynamic characteristics of the model otter boards were tested by efficiency model test to measure the shearing, drag force of the models and visualization test using hydrogen bubble method to observe the streak-line and time-line of flow around the models, and milk spout method to observe the separation zone in the wake behind the models. This study tested for 5 models such ad without slot, slot position 0.2C, 0.4C, 0.6C and 0.8C. The results obtained are as follows: \circled1 The maximum C sub(L) of model otter board with slot position 0.6C in attack angle 27$^{\circ}$ was the highest of all models, it's value was 1.59. \circled2 In general, the L/D ratio of the one slot otter boards were 16~28% higher than otter board without slot. \circled3 The slot position 0.6C was better than any other slot position, and it's conformed by visiualization. \circled4 As to the model otter board with slot position 0.6C, flow speed of the back side was faster 1.3 to 1.7 times than in the front side. \circled5 The size of the separated zone in case of the model otter board with 0.6C was smaller than that of any other models.

  • Some drugs can offer far better medical effectiveness as it is injected through the intradermal layer of the skin, known as a needle-free injection. However, conventional needle-free devices might deliver a relatively large amount of drug in a just single spot of skin, splitting open the tissue layer structure, which might cause bruising and bleeding. By injecting the small volume with a fast repetition rate in a large surface area of skin, the patient may get much fewer injuries and pain. To achieve that specification, the driving force must be instantaneous and short-pulsed. Such a form of an injection device has been developed but the efficacy of those devices has been rarely examined. Therefore, this study developed the laser-induced microjet device that ejects microjet whose speed is ~310 m/s, during the 400~800 ㎲ of pulse time. The device can eject ~1 µL of the drug at the rate at which each shot repeated 10 shots per second. Using this specification, we evaluated the efficacy of drug injection onto mouse models. After injecting the insulin solution into the mouse model, the blood insulin level is detected, resulting in 20 % of blood insulin level with the ordinary needle syringe injection method.
