The satellite visible data have been successfully applied to study the ocean color. Another ocean color sensor, the Ocean Scanning Multi-spectral Imager (OSMI) on the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT) will be launched in 1999. In order to understand the characteristics of future OSMI images, we have first discussed the simulation models and procedures in detail, and produced typical patterns of radiances at visible bands by using radiative transfer models. The various simulated images of full satellite passes and Korean local areas for different seasons, water types, and the satellite crossing equator time (CET) are presented to illustrate the distribution of each component of radiance (i.e., aerosol scattering, Rayleigh scattering, sun glitter, water-leaving radiance, and total radiance). A method to evaluate the image quality and availability is then developed by using the characteristics of image defined as the Complex Signal Noise Ratio (CSNR). Meanwhile, a series of CSNR images are generated from the simulated radiance components for different cases, which can be used to evaluate the quality and availability of OSMI images before the KOMPSAT will be placed in orbit. Finally, the quality and availability of OSMI images are quantitatively analyzed by the simulated CSNR image. It is hoped that the results would be useful to all scientists who are in charge of OSMI mission and to those who plan to use the data from OSMI.
The satellite in the geostationary orbit rotates around Earth center with the same angular rate as the Earth. So, the Earth can be observed with sequential time series. GOES(Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites)-9 is a meteorological satellite, which is now located at 155ㆁE geostationary orbit location in order to monitor East-Asia meteorological environment including Korean Peninsular. Every meteorological information is acquired from GOES-9 with the period of about 1 hour. COMS(Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) has been developed by KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) since 2003 and will be launched at 2008. COMS will be located at different orbit location compared to GOES-9. In this study, a simulated COMS image which is the perspective from different geostationary orbit location is generated using an GOES-9 image.

Various satellite sensors having ranges of the visible, infrared, and thermal wavelengths have been launched due to the improvement of hardware technologies of satellite sensors development. According to the development of satellite sensors with various wavelength ranges, the fusion and integration of multisensor images are proceeded. Image matching process is an essential step for the application of multisensor images. Some algorithms, such as SIFT and SURF, have been proposed to co-register satellite images. However, when the existing algorithms are applied to extract matching points between optical and thermal images, high accuracy of co-registration might not be guaranteed because these images have difference spectral and spatial characteristics. In this paper, location of control points in a reference image is extracted by SURF, and then, location of their corresponding pairs is estimated from the correlation of the local similarity. In the case of local similarity, phase correlation method, which is based on fourier transformation, is applied. In the experiments by simulated, Landsat-8, and ASTER datasets, the proposed algorithm could extract reliable matching points compared to the existing SURF-based method.

In order to promptly respond to disasters, the era of new spaces has opened where satellite images with various characteristics can be used. As the number of satellites in operation at home and abroad increases and the characteristics of satellite sensors vary, it is necessary to find satellite images optimized for disaster types. Disaster types were divided into typhoons, heavy rains, droughts, forest fires, etc., and the optimal satellite images were selected for each type of disaster considering satellite orbits, active/passive sensors, spatial resolution, wavelength bands, and revisit cycles. Each satellite orbit TLE (Two Line Element) information was applied to the SGP4 (Simplified General Perturbations version 4) model to develop a satellite orbit simulation algorithm. The developed algorithm simulated the satellite orbit at 10-second intervals and selected an accurate observation area by considering the angle of incidence of each sensor. The satellite orbit simulation algorithm was applied to the case of Typhoon Mitag in 2019 and compared with the actual satellite list. Through the analyzed results, the time and area of the captured image and the image to be recorded were analyzed within a few seconds to select the optimal satellite image according to the type of disaster. In the future, it is intended to serve as a basis for building a system that can promptly request and secure satellite images in the event of a disaster.

SAR has pulse compression gain through the process including range and azimuth. Efficient jammers against the SAR with simulated elements are evaluated in the view of power and SAR image. In this paper, J/S is analysed for SAR with RF propagation equation firstly. Several jamming signals on SAR signal are made into SAR image through pulse compression process. Objective jamming performance is evaluated using euclidean distance.

This paper presents a fire detection criterion based on flame color, spatial and temporal characteristic analysis of color fire images. To propose the criterion, Firstly the fire candidate regions were selected by using analyzed Cr and Y threshold value, and then texture analysis of candidate regions was performed by using DCT. Finally variation of Y values of these regions was calculated for temporal analysis. The proposed fire detection criterion was simulated by using fifteen test images and practicality was verified.
This study proposed a modified anisotropic diffusion restoration for image classification. The anisotropic diffusion restoration uses a probabilistic model based on Markov random field, which represents geographical connectedness existing in many remotely sensed images, and restores them through an iterative diffusion processing. In every iteration, the bonding-strength coefficient associated with the spatial connectedness is adaptively estimated as a function of brightness gradient. The gradient function involves a constant called "temperature", which determines the amount of discontinuity and is continuously decreased in the iterations. In this study, the proposed method has been extensively evaluated using simulated images that were generated from various patterns. These patterns represent the types of natural and artificial land-use. The simulated images were restored by the modified anisotropic diffusion technique, and then classified by a multistage hierarchical clustering classification. The classification results were compared to them of the non-restored simulation images. The restoration with an appropriate temperature considerably reduces error in classification, especially for noisy images. This study made experiments on the satellite images remotely sensed on the Korean peninsula. The experimental results show that the proposed approach is also very effective on image classification in remote sensing.
Although EOC data have been frequently used in several applications since the launch of the KOMPSAT-1 satellite in 1999, its radiometric characteristics are not clear due to the inherent limitations of the on-board calibration system. The radiometric characteristics of remotely sensed imagery can be measured by the sensitivity of radiant flux coming from various surface features on the earth. The objective of this study is to analyze the radiometric characteristics of EOC data by simulating the sensor- received radiance. Initially, spectral reflectance values of reference targets were measured on the ground by using a portable spectre-radiometer at the EOC spectrum. A radiative transfer model, LOWTRAN, then simulated the sensor-received radiance values of the same reference target. By correlating the digital number (DN) extracted from the EOC image to the corresponding radiance values simulated from LOWTRAN, we could find the radiometric calibration coefficients for EOC image. The radiometric gain coefficients of EOC are very similar to those of other panchromatic optical sensors.
ROCSAT-2 mission is to daily image over Taiwan and the surrounding area for disaster monitoring, land use, and ocean surveillance during the 5-year mission lifetime. The satellite will be launched in December 2003 into its mission orbit, which is selected as a 14 rev/day repetitive Sun-synchronous orbit descending over (120 deg E, 24 deg N) and 9:45 a.m. over the equator with the minimum eccentricity. National Space Program Office (NSPO) is developing a ROCSAT-2 Image Processing System (IPS), which aims to provide real-time high quality image data for ROCSAT-2 mission. A simulated ROCSAT-2 image, based on Level 1B QuickBird Data, is generated for IPS verification. The test image is comprised of one panchromatic data and four multispectral data. The qualification process consists of four procedures: (a) QuickBird image processing, (b) generation of simulated ROCSAT-2 image in Generic Raw Level Data (GERALD) format, (c) ROCSAT-2 image processing, and (d) geometric error analysis. QuickBird standard photogrammetric parameters of a camera that models the imaging and optical system is used to calculate the latitude and longitude of each line and sample. The backward (inverse model) approach is applied to find the relationship between geodetic coordinate system (latitude, longitude) and image coordinate system (line, sample). The bilinear resampling method is used to generate the test image. Ground control points are used to evaluate the error for data processing. The data processing contains various coordinate system transformations using attitude quaternion and orbit elements. Through the qualification test process, it is verified that the IPS is capable of handling high-resolution image data with the accuracy of Level 2 processing within 500 m.

Subsurface Internal Waves(IWs) can be detected in satellite images as periodic alternating brighter/darker stripes. It is known that there are two types of IWs-depression type and elevation type-depending on the water depth in stratified oceans. In this study, we have quantitatively verified the process of converting polarity from depression waves to elevation waves using ERS-2 SAR image acquired over the northern South China Sea. We simulated the evolution of IWs near a turning point with a numerical model for internal wave propagation. The simulation results near the turning point clearly showed us not only a conversion process of IWs from depression to elevation waves, but also a similar wave pattern with the observed SAR image. We also simulated SAR intensity variation near the turning point. The upper layer currents were computed at regular intervals using the numerical model, as the IWs were passing through the turning point. Then, an integrated hydrodynamic-electromagnetic model was used for simulating SAR intensity profiles from the upper layer currents. The simulated SAR intensity profiles were compared with the observed SAR intensities.
