Development of the Interface Module for an Effective Application of a Digital Mockup

  • As the cumulative amount of spent fuel increases, the reliable and effective management of the spent fuel has become a world-wide mission. For this mission, KAERI is developing the Advanced Spent Fuel Conditioning Process (ACP) as a pre-disposal treatment process for spent fuel. Conventional approach to the development of the process and the remote operation technology is to fabricate the process equipment on the same scale as the real environment and demonstrate the remote handling operation using simulated fuel called a mock-up test. But this mock-up test is expensive and time consuming, since the design may need to be modified and the equipment fabricated again to account for the problems found during a testing. To deal with this problem, we developed a digital mockup for the ACP. Also, for an effective utilization of the digital mockup, we developed user interface modules such as the data acquisition and display module and the external input device interface module. The result of this implementation shows that a continuous motion of the manipulator using the external device interface can be represented easily and the information display screens responded well to the simulation situation.

  • This study presents the integrated modeling approach to simulate the proton exchange membrane [PEM] fuel cell system for vehicle application. The fuel cell system consisting of stack and balance of plant (BOP) was simulated with MATLAB/Simulink environment to estimate the maximum system power and investigate the effect of BOP component sizing on system performance and efficiency. The PEM fuel cell stack model was established by using a semi-empirical modeling. To maximize the net efficiency of fuel cell system, multi-variable optimization code was adopted. Using this method, the optimized operating values were obtained according to various system net power levels. The fuel cell model established was co-linked to AVL CRUISE, a vehicle simulation package. Through the vehicle simulation software, the fuel economy of fuel cell powered electric vehicle for two types of driving cycles was presented and compared. It is expected that this study can be effectively employed in the basic BOP component sizing and in establishing system operation map with respect to net power level of fuel cell system.

  • This paper describes a finite element model of the microstructure of dispersion type nuclear fuels, which can be used to determine the effective thermal conductivity of the fuels during irradiation. The model simulates a representative region of the fuel as a prism shaped unit cell made of brick elements. The elements within the unit cell are assigned material properties of either the fuel or the matrix depending on position, in such a way as to represent randomly distributed fuel particles with a size distribution similar to that of the as manufactured fuel. By applying an appropriate heat flux across the unit cell it is possible to determine the effective thermal conductivity of the unit cell as a function of the volume fraction of the fuel particles. The presence of a fuel/matrix interaction layer is simulated by the addition of a third set of material properties that are assigned to the finite elements that surround each fuel particle. In this way the effective thermal conductivity of the material may also be determined as a function of the volume fraction of the interaction layer. Work is on going to add fission gas bubbles in the fuel as a fourth phase to the model.

액상부탄 분사시스템의 수치시뮬레이션 및 분무특성 예측 (Simulation of Fuel Injection System and Model of Spray Behavior in Liquefied Butane)

  • The characteristics of liquefied butane spray are expected to be different from conventional diesel fuel spray, because a kind of flash boiling spray is expected when the back pressure is below the saturation vapor pressure of the butane(0.23MPa at $25^{\circ}C$). An accumulator type pintle injector and its fuel delivery system has been simulated in ruder to give injection pressure, needle lift and rate of fuel injected. The governing equation were solved by finite difference metho. The injection duration was controlled by solenoid valve. Spray behaviors such as a transient spray tip penetration, spray angle and SMD were calculated based on the empirical correlations in case that the back pressure is both above the vapor pressure of the butane and below that of butane. When the back preassure is below the vapor pressure of the fuel, conventional correlation is modified to represent the effect of flash boiling.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of incompressible flow in a tube type marine fuel oil filter have been investigated. Fluent program has been used to obtain the solutions for the problems of three-dimensional, turbulent fuel oil flow in a filtering system. The inlet flow field is assumed to be uniform. The velocity and pressure distributions were obtained using Darcy's law. The increase of inlet velocity for cleaning fuel oil may cause some problems like vibration of the filter element. It was also required to consider the distribution of cleaning velocity because the worst distribution of cleaning velocity may cause the local insufficient cleaning effect and furthermore the effective filtration area can be reduced. The simulated results show that the computer code can be successfully applied for simulation of the complex base oil flow through the porous media. This paper could be applied to the design of auto-backwashing filtering system as design factor.

  • Hydrogen fuel cell is clean and efficient technology along with high energy densities. While there are many different types of fuel cells, the proton exchange membrane fuel cell stands out as one of the most promising for transportation and small stationary applications. This paper focuses on design of bipolar plate for proton exchange membrane fuel cell. The bipolar plate model is realistically and accurately simulated velocity distribution, current density distribution and its effect on the PEMFC system using CFD tool FLUENT.

  • The fuel cell system is environment-friendly and energy efficient system. Especially, the fuel cell cogeneration systems providing heat and electricity to buildings have been developed and applied to a lot of sites in the world to cope with the global warming and $CO_2$ emission problem. This paper presents the result of study on the economic evaluation with super-micro fuel cell (SMFC) cogeneration system by varying the floor area ($132m^2{\sim}331m^2$) of the house, whose system capacity ranges from 0.10 kWe to 0.50 kWe. The electricity demand, heat demand, saved energy cost, and the simple pay-back period have been simulated for the various capacities of fuel cell cogeneration system. As a result, this study suggests the fuel cell system’s capacity decision strategy for a given house area. Contrary to conventional design assumptions, the smaller capacity fuel cell cogeneration system is appropriate for the house of large floor area to defense the progressive electricity tax, and the larger capacity fuel cell cogeneration system is appropriate for the house of small floor area to sell the electricity.

Graphic Simulator for Analyzing the Remote Operation of the Advanced Spent Fuel Conditioning Process

  • KAERI is developing the Advanced Spent Fuel Conditioning Process (ACP) as a pre-disposal treatment process for spent fuel. Equipment used for such a spent fuel recycling and management process must operate in intense radiation fields as well as in a high temperature. Therefore, remote maintenance has a played a significant role in this process because of combined chemical and radiological contamination. Hence suitable remote handling and maintenance technology needs to be developed along with the design of the process concepts. To do this, we developed the graphic simulator for the ACP. The graphic simulator provides the capability of verifying the remote operability of the process without fabrication of the process equipment. In other words, by applying virtual reality to the remote maintenance operation, a remote operation task can be simulated in the graphic simulator, not in a real environment. The graphic simulator will substantially reduce the cost of the development of the remote handling and maintenance procedure as well as the process equipment, while at the same time producing a process and a remote maintenance concept that is more reliable, easier to implement, and easier to understand.

  • The remote operation of the Advanced Spent Fuel Conditioning Process (ACP) is analyzed by using the 3D graphic simulation tools. Since the spent nuclear fuel, which is a high radioactive material, is processed in the ACP, the ACP equipment is operated in intense radiation fields as well as in a high temperature. Thus, the equipment is operated in a remote manner and should be designed with consideration for the remote handling and maintenance. Also suitable remote handling technology needs to be developed along with the design of the process concepts. For this we developed a graphic simulator, which provides the capability of verifying the remote operability of the ACP without the fabrication of the process equipment.
