The effect of several simplified methods of seismic analysis is estimated. The pounding/contacting of superstructures were considered in the multispan simply supported bridge and the multispan continuous bridge. Although nonlinear time history analysis is generally used for seismic analysis of bridges, many codes including AASHTO propose several simplified analysis methods. AASHTO, however, does not mention pounding. Therefore, the simplified methods may produce results that are different from those of nonlinear time history analysis. This study developed nonlinear analytical models of the two types of bridges mentioned. The models were then modified to the simplified linear models for simplified analysis. The results of the simplified methods were compared with those of nonlinear time history analysis. It was found that including of the pounding/contacting element in the simplified methods generated responses similar to those of the nonlinear time history analysis.
Vulnerability studies on the existing building stock require that a large number of buildings is analyzed to obtain statistically significant evaluations of the seismic performance. Therefore, analytical evaluation methods need to be based on simplified methodologies of analysis which can afford the treatment of a large building population with a reasonable computational effort. Simplified Pushover-Based Earthquake Loss Assessment approach (SP-BELA), where a simplified methodology to identify the structural capacity of the building through the definition of a pushover curve is adopted, was developed on these bases. Main objective of the research work presented in this paper is to validate the simplified methodology implemented in SP-BELA against the results of more sophisticated nonlinear dynamic analyses (NLDAs). The comparison is performed for RC buildings designed only to vertical loads, representative of the "as built" in Italy and in Mediterranean countries with a building stock very similar to the Italian one. In NLDAs the non linear and degrading behaviour, typical of the structures under consideration when subjected to high seismic loads, is evaluated using models able to capture, with adequate accuracy, the non linear behaviour of RC structural elements taking into account stiffness degradation, strength deterioration, and pinching effect. Results show when simplified analyses are in good agreement with NLDAs. As a consequence, unsatisfactory results from simplified analysis are pointed out to address their current applicability limits.
Steel-concrete composite segments replacing the conventional reinforced concrete segments can provide the rectangular shield tunnel superiorities on bearing capacity, ductility and economy. A simplified model with high-efficiency on computation is proposed for investigating the nonlinear response of the rectangular tunnel lining composed of composite segments. The simulation model is developed by an assembly of nonlinear fiber beam elements and spring elements to express the transfer mechanism of forces through components of composite segments, and radial joints. The simulation is conducted with the considerations of material nonlinearity and geometric nonlinearity associated with the whole loading process. The validity of the model is evaluated through comparison of the proposed nonlinear simulation with results obtained from the full-scale test of the segmental tunnel lining. Furthermore, a parameter study is conducted by means of the simplified model. The results show that the stiffness of the radial joint at haunch of the ling and the thickness of inner steel plate of segments have remarkable influence on the behaviour of the lining.

In substitution of beam-nonlinear spring model for real-car, it may have errors due to complicated characteristics of joint and overestimation of joints stiffness. In this research, a method for the joint modeling was suggested by nonlinear static and dynamic analyses of beam and shell joint models and verified by the application of accomplished joint modeling method to simplified full car model. In consequence, modified simplified full car model was improved in local acceleration and rigid wall force. Finally, the frontal crash analyses with the dummy were established and the accelerations of accelerations of head, chest and pelvis had good agreements with those of shell model.
The slope stability analysis is usually done using the methods of calculation to rupture. The problem lies in determining the critical failure surface and the corresponding factor of safety (FOS). To evaluate the slope stability by a method of limit equilibrium, there are linear and nonlinear methods. The linear methods are direct methods of calculation of FOS but nonlinear methods require an iterative process. The nonlinear simplified Bishop method's is popular because it can quickly calculate FOS for different slopes. This paper concerns the use of inverse analysis by genetic algorithm (GA) to find out the factor of safety for the slopes using the Bishop simplified method. The analysis is formulated to solve the nonlinear equilibrium equation and find the critical failure surface and the corresponding safety factor. The results obtained by this approach compared with those available in literature illustrate the effectiveness of this inverse method.

Modelling and crashworthiness analysis of simplified vehicle structures with beam element and nonlinear spring element to which axial and bending collapse mecha- nisms are applied are carried out. And on the basis of these analyses, two types of full car modelling and crahworthiness analyses with nonlinear spring and beam element are accomplished. The one is the full car model of which 30% of the structures are modelled with nonlinear spring and beam element, and the other 75% of whole structures. And the results are compared with those of full car analysis with shell element.
Procedures are investigated by which nonlinear finite element shell analysis algorithms can be simplified to provide more cost effective approximate analyses of orthogonally-reinforced concrete flat plate structures. Two alternative effective stiffness formulations, and an unbalanced force formulation, are described. These are then implemented into a nonlinear shell analysis algorithm. Nonlinear geometry, three-dimensional layered stress analyses, and other general formulations are bypassed to reduce the computational burden. In application to standard patch test problems, these simplified approximate analysis procedures are shown to provide reasonable accuracy while significantly reducing the computational effort. Corroboration studies using various simple and complex test specimens provide an indication of the relative accuracy of the constitutive models utilized. The studies also point to the limitations of the approximate formulations, and identify situations where one should revert back to full nonlinear shell analyses.

Besides the complex instructions of guidance documents for seismic rehabilitation of existing buildings, some institutions have provided simple criteria in terms of simplified rehabilitations. ASCE 41-06 is one of documents that introduced a simple method for assessment of certain buildings that do not require advanced analytical procedures. Furthermore the New Zealand guideline has presented a simple lateral mechanism analysis that is a hand static analysis for determining the probable collapse mechanism, lateral strength and displacement capacity of the structure. The present study is focused on verifying the results of the simplified methods which is used by NZSEE and ASCE 41-06 in assessment of existing buildings. For this, three different special steel moment and braced frames are assessed under these two guidelines and the accuracy of the results is checked with the results of nonlinear static and dynamic analysis. After comparison of obtained results, suggestions are presented to improve seismic retrofit criteria.

Through the recent accident, the checking of ultimate hull girder capacity for container ship should be needed. Smith’s method is well known as the only simplified method to access rapidly for ultimate hull girder capacity except very expensive nonlinear F.E approach. This simplified method, however, is admitted to apply only to bulker and tanker in accordance with Classification Rules up to now. The targets of this study are to verify effectiveness of the simplified method for container ship’s ultimate hull girder strength and to propose the safety factor considering the local bending in double bottom structures due to out of plane loads through the nonlinear F.E analyses. Two different sized ships and three loading conditions which are pure bending, homo-loading and one-bay empty condition were used for this study. Based on the F.E results, the present study showed that CSR’s simplified method is available for the ultimate hull girder strength of container ship and over 1.2 of safety factor should be applied to consider the local bending effect in double bottom structures due to out of plane loads such as sea pressure an cargo.
A simple analytical procedure to analyze reinforced concrete (RC) beams with cracked section is proposed on the basis of the simplified moment-curvature relations of RC sections. Unlike previous analytical models which result in overestimation of stiffness and underestimation of structural deformations induced from assuming perfect-bond condition between steel and concrete, the proposed analytical procedure considers fixed-end rotation caused by anchorage. Furthermore, the proposed analytical procedure, compared with previous numerical models, promotes effectiveness of analysis by reflecting several factors which can influence nonlinearity of RC structure into the simplified moment-curvature relation. Finally, correlation studies between analytical and experimental results are conducted to establish the applicability of the proposed analytical procedure to the nonlinear analysis of RC structures.
