  • The potential pollution problems resulting from tanker collision necessitate the requirement for an effective structural design and the development of relevant safety regulation. During a few decades, the great effort has been made by International Maritime Organization and the Administration, etc, to reduce oil spillage from collision accidents. However there is still a need for investigation in the light of structural evaluation method for the experiments and rational analysis, and design development for an operational purpose of ships. This study is aimed at investigating a complicated structural response of bow structures of oil carriers for assessing the energy dissipation and crushing mechanics of striking vessel through a methodology of the numerical analysts for the various models and its design changes. Through this study an optimal bow construction absorbing great portion of kinetic energy in the least penetration depth prior to reach to the cargo area and an effective location of collision bulkhead are investigated. In order to obtain a rational results in this study, three stages of response analysis procedures are performed as follows; 1). 16 simplified ship models are used to investigate the structural response against bow collision with variation of primary and secondary members. Mass and speed are also varied in two conditions. 2). 21 models conisted of 5 size of full scaled oil carriers are used to perform the collision simulation with the various sizes and deadweight delivered in a recent which are complied with SOLAS and MARPOL. 3). 36 models of 100k oil carrier are used to investigate the structural response and its influence to the collision bulkhead against bow collision in variation with location of collision bulkhead, primary mombers, framing system and colliding conditions, etc.

  • It is clarified in the radioactive waste transfer regulation that the concentration of radioactive waste for the major radio nuclide has to be examined when radioactive waste is guided to the radioactive waste stores. In case of the low level radioactive waste sample, the analytical results of radioactive waste concentration frequently show a value lower than minimum detectable activity (MDA). Since the MDA value basically depends on the amount of a sample, background value, measurement time, counting efficiency, and etc, it would be necessary to increase a sample amount with a intention of minimizing MDA. In order to measure a concentration of $^{129}I$ in low and medium level radioactive waste, $^{129}I$ was collected by using a distillation technique after leaching the simulated radioactive waste sample with a non-volatile acid. The recovery of $^{129}I$ measured was compared with that measured with column elution technique which is a conventional method using an anion-exchange resin. The recovery of inactive iodide by using the distillation method and column elution were found as $86.5{\pm}0.9%$ and $87.3{\pm}2.7%$, respectively. The recovery and MDA value calculated for distillation technique when 100 g of extracted solution of $^{129}I$ was taken, were found to be $84.6{\pm}1.6%$ and $1.2{\times}10^{-4}Bq/g$, respectively. Consequently, the proposed technique with simplified process lowered the MDA value more than 10 times compared to the column elution technique that has a disadvantage of limited sampling amount.

  • The academic research works about liquid storage tanks are reviewed for the purpose of providing valuable reference to the engineering practice on their aseismic design. A summary of the performance of tanks during past earthquakes is described in this paper. Next, the seismic response of tanks under unidirectional earthquake is reported, supplemented with the dynamic response under multidirectional motions. Then, researches on the influence of soil-structure interaction are brought out to help modify the seismic design approach of tanks in different areas with variable properties of soils. Afterwards, base isolation systems are reported to demonstrate their effectiveness for the earthquake-resistant design of liquid storage tanks. Further, researches about the liquid-structure interaction are reviewed with description of simplified models and numerical analytical methods, some of which consider the elastic effect of tank walls. Moreover, the liquid sloshing phenomenon on the hydrodynamic behaviors of tanks is presented by various algorithms including grid-based and meshfree method. And then the impact of baffles in changing the dynamic characteristics of the liquid-structure system is raised, which shows the energy dissipation by the vortex motion of liquid. In addition, uplifting effect is given to enhance the understanding on the capacity of unanchored tanks and some assessment of their development. At last, the concluding remarks and the aspects of extended research in the field of liquid storage tanks under seismic loads are provided, emphasizing the thermal stress analysis, the replaceable system for base isolation, the liquid-solid interaction and dynamic responses with stochastic excitations.

  • Combustion of gaseous fuel combustor in a high temperature vitiated air stream was studied with computer simulation. It is for application to afterburner of gas turbine engine which the exact mechanism is not yet clarified. As the jet velocity from fuel nozzle is very high and the geometry of combustor is three dimensional complex structure, many time and money are required to have good results. To consider this demerit, it is simplified to 2-dimensional and modified with the nozzle hole area to same area of annual status. As the thickness of annual is too thin, it is to divide with the many grids for reasonable results. Accordingly, new method which injected fuel mass, momentum and energy are added to source terms of each governing conservation equation as a source terms is introduced like as two phase analysis. Reaction rate is determined by taking into account the Arrhenius reaction based on a single step reaction mechanism. It is focused to temperature and product concentration distribution at each equivalence ratio of inlet hot product.

  • Power conversion system must be increased switching frequency in order to achieve a small size, a light weight and a low noise. However, the switches of converter are subjected to high switching power losses and switching stresses. As a result of those, the power system brings on a low efficiency. In this paper, the authors propose a DC-DC boost converter of high power by partial resonant switch method (PRSM). The switching devices in a proposed circuit are operated with soft switching and the control technique of those is simplified for switch to drive in constant duty cycle. The partial resonant circuit makes use of a inductor using step up and a condenser of loss-less snubber. Also the circuit has a merit which is taken to increase of efficiency, as it makes to a regeneration at input source of accumulated energy in snubber condenser without loss of snubber in conventional circuit. The result is that the switching loss is very low and the efficiency of system is high. The proposed converter is deemed the most suitable for high power applications where the power switching devices are used.

  • In accordance with the trend for high-speed multi-axes, and the increasing technical sophistication of machine tools, thermal deformation has become an important factor in the accuracy of machine tools. It was analyzed that thermal deformation error accounts for about 70% of all errors made with machine tools. For precise temperature control, both cooling and heating should be implemented. A hot gas bypass type cooling cycle method has a simplified structure and temperature control accuracy to with in ${\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$. In this study, the performances of oil cooler system, including temperature controllability according to hot gas floe and preset temperature sustainability according to temperature load, were tested. It is expected that this study will contribute to the development and performances of oil cooler system, which could minimize thermal errors and improve the quality of precision machine tools.

  • A low voltage wire should be used considering that a load used in the end is a low voltage. In regard to these wires, there are needs for research about the wire thickness calculation in accordance with IEC standard because the standardization process for IEC (KS standard) was completed on June 30, 2005, and they stopped producing NEC-standard products by the order from Korean Agency for Technology and Standards under Ministry of Knowledge Economy (former Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy) since July 1, 2006. This study compared, in terms of the thickness calculation of low voltage wire, a reduction factor application by IEC standard about allowed current and an application for calculation of voltage drop. It also proposed the formula for IEC standard to decrease errors and resolve the difficulty of standardized calculation by analyzing the difference between simplified formula and standardized formula that are the most frequently used calculation method of voltage drop.

  • In recent day, many people are interested in wind resource for generation of electric power. Especially, it is made assessment the possibility of generation of electric power by wind resource originated from running cars and buses in downtown or highway. Moreover bus, driven in the exclusive lane, is focused on possibility of generation electric power on highway because median strip makes fast flow way between bus body and median strip and a pattern will appear in the flow way like drag coefficient. But nobody can guess whether the induced flow will increase or decrease and estimate amount of change of drag coefficient. Solving drag coefficient of bus running highway is the point of this paper. To solve this problem, we use the CFD method. The model is a bus simplified without mirror and gates. In order to assess result, the flow analysis surrounding the bus on the flat road where median strip is not installed has been compared with road with median strip. Solving condition is that the driving highway and median strip are running with 100km/h (27.8m/s).

  • Seismic assessment and rehabilitation of Monumental Buildings constitute an important issue in many regions around the world to preserve cultural heritage. On the contrary, many recent earthquakes have demonstrated the high vulnerability of this type of structures. The high nonlinear masonry behaviour requires ad hoc refined finite element numerical models, whose complexity and computational costs are generally unsuitable for practical applications. For these reasons, several authors proposed simplified numerical strategies to be used in engineering practice. However, most of these alternative methods are oversimplified being based on the assumption of in-plane behaviour of masonry walls. Moreover, they cannot be used for modelling the monumental structures for which the interaction between plane and out-plane behaviour governs the structural response. Recently, an innovative discrete-modelling approach for the simulation of both in-plane and out of-plane response of masonry structures was proposed and applied to study several typologies of historic structures. In this paper the latter model is applied with reference to a real case study, and numerically compared with an advanced finite element modelling. The method is applied to the St.Venerio church in Reggiolo (Italy), damaged during the 2012 Emilia-Romagna earthquake and numerically investigated in the literature.

  • The present work discusses two different models of boiling water reactor (BWR) bundle to compare the neutronic characteristics of uranium dioxide ($UO_2$) and uranium zirconium hydride ($UZrH_{1.6}$) fuel. Each bundle consists of four assemblies. The BWR assembly fueled with $UO_2$ contains $8{\times}8$ fuel rods while that fueled with $UZrH_{1.6}$ contains $9{\times}9$ fuel rods. The Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport code, based on the Mont Carlo method, is used to design three dimensional models for BWR fuel bundles at typical operating temperatures and pressure conditions. These models are used to determine the multiplication factor, pin-by-pin power distribution, axial power distribution, thermal neutron flux distribution, and axial thermal neutron flux. The moderator and coolant (water) are permitted to boil within the BWR core forming steam bubbles, so it is important to calculate the reactivity effect of voiding at different values. It is found that the hydride fuel bundle design can be simplified by eliminating water rods and replacing the control blade with control rods. $UZrH_{1.6}$ fuel improves the performance of the BWR in different ways such as increasing the energy extracted per fuel assembly, reducing the uranium ore, and reducing the plutonium accumulated in the BWR through burnup.
