In this paper, we present the estimation of wind turbine power generation using Cascade Architectures of Fuzzy Neural Networks(CAFNN). The proposed model uses the wind speed average, the standard deviation and the past output power as input data. The CAFNN identification process uses a 10-min average wind speed with its standard deviation. The method for rule-based fuzzy modeling uses Gaussian membership function. It has three fuzzy variables with three modifiable parameters. The CAFNN's configuration has three Logic Processors(LP) that are constructed cascade architecture and an effective optimization method uses two-level genetic algorithm. First, The CAFNN is trained with one-day average input variables. Once the CAFNN has been trained, test data are used without any update. The main advantage of using CAFNN is having simple structure of system with many input variables. Therefore, The proposed CAFNN technique is useful to predict the wind turbine(WT) power effectively and hence that information will be helpful to decide the control strategy for the WT system operation and application.

Due to the Korean government's renewable energy support policy such as the renewable energy utilization building certificate and enlarging the compulsory ratio of investment on the public building, the rooftop photovoltaic projects are expanding rapidly. It is very important for the rooftop photovoltaic projects to analyze the shading effect of the adjacent structures or own facilities. But, the photovoltaic arrangements are planned by the experience of the designers or simple graphic tools. The purpose of this study is to build the process model for optimizing of rooftop photovoltaic arrangement based on three-dimensional geo-spatial information.

Horse riding is widely recognized as a valuable form of education, exercise and therapy. But, the injuries observed in horse riding range from very minor injuries to fatalities. In order to reduce these injuries, the effective horseback riding simulator is required. In this paper, we proposed the implementation method of horse gait and riding aids for horseback riding robot simulator HRB-1. For implementation of horse gait to robot simulator, we gathered and modified real motion data of horse. We obtained two main frequencies of each gait by frequency analysis, and then simple sinusoidal functions are acquired by genetic algorithm. In addition, we developed riding aids system including hands, leg, and seat aids. With the help of a developed robotic system, beginners can learn the skill of real horse riding without the risk of injury.
Passive dynamic vibration absorbers (DVAs) are often used to suppress the excessive vibration of a large structure due to their simple construction and low maintenance cost compared to other vibration control techniques. A new type of passive DVA consists of two pendulums connected with spring and dashpot element is investigated. This research evaluated the performance of the DVA in reducing the vibration response of a two degree of freedom shear structure. A model for the two DOF vibration system with the absorber is developed. The nominal absorber parameters are calculated using a Genetic Algorithm(GA) procedure. A parametric study is performed to evaluate the effect of each absorber parameter on performance. The simulation results show that the optimum condition for the absorber frequencies and damping ratios is mainly affected by pendulum length, mass, and the damping coefficient of the pendulum's hinge joint. An experimental model validates the theoretical results. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed technique is able be used as an effective alternative solution for reducing the vibration response of a multi degree of freedom vibration system.

Several complex processes that are employed in industries, such as shipping, power plants, and the petrochemical industry, involve time-varying behavior as well as strong nonlinear behavior during operation. The fixed-parameter proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers have difficulty in dealing with control problems that occur in such processes. In this paper, we propose a method of designing a nonlinear PID controller for industrial processes that exhibit a large number of nonlinearities and time-varying behavior. The gains of the nonlinear PID controller are characterized by a simple nonlinear function of the error and/or error rate depending on the process set-point and output. We tune the user-defined parameters using a genetic algorithm by minimizing the integral of time absolute error (ITAE) index. We verify the effectiveness of the proposed method by performing a comparison of the proposed method and two other nonlinear and adaptive methods that are employed for reference tracking, disturbance-rejection performances, and robustness to parameter changes on a continuously stirred tank reactor.
Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) have wide application area. They are of vital importance at process plants to detect the onset of hazardous events, for instance, a release of some hazardous material, and for mitigating their consequences to humans, material assets, and the environment. The integrated safety systems, where electrical, electronic, and/or programmable electronic (E/E/PE) devices interact with mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems are governed by international safety standards like IEC 61508. IEC 61508 organises its requirements according to a Safety Life Cycle (SLC). Fulfilling these requirements following the SLC can be complex without the aid of SIS supporting tools. This paper presents simple SIS support tool which can greatly help the user to implement the design phase of the safety lifecycle. This tool is modelled in the form of Android application which can be integrated with a Web-based data reading and modifying system. This tool can reduce the computation time spent on the design phase of the SLC and reduce the possible errors which can arise in the process. In addition, this paper presents an optimization approach to SISs based on cost measures. The multi-objective genetic algorithm has been used for the optimization to search for the best combinations of solutions without enumeration of all the solution space.

Although numerous investigations have been performed over the years to predict the behavior and bearing capacity of piles, the mechanisms are not yet entirely understood. The prediction of bearing capacity is a difficult task, because large numbers of factors affect the capacity and also have complex relationship one another. Therefore, it is extremely difficult to search the essential factors among many factors, which are related with ground condition, pile type, driving condition and others, and then appropriately consider complicated relationship among the searched factors. The present paper describes the application of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) in predicting the capacity including its components at the tip and along the shaft from dynamic load test of the driven piles. Firstly, the effect of each factor on the value of bearing capacity is investigated on the basis of sensitivity analysis using ANN modeling. Secondly, the authors use the design methodology composed of ANN and genetic algorithm (GA) to find optimal neural network model to predict the bearing capacity. The authors allow this methodology to find the appropriate combination of input parameters, the number of hidden units and the transfer structure among the input, the hidden and the out layers. The results of this study indicate that the neural network model serves as a reliable and simple predictive tool for the bearing capacity of driven piles.

Recently intelligent characters in computer games have been an important element more and more because they continually stimulate gamers' interests. As a typical method for implementing such intelligent characters, neural networks have been used for training action patterns of opponent's characters and game rules. However, some of the game rules can be abruptly changed and action properties of garners in on-line game environments are quite different according to gamers. In this paper, we address how a neural network adapts to those environmental changes. Our adaptation solution includes two components: an individual adaptation mechanism and a group adaptation mechanism. With the individual adaptation algorithm, an intelligent character steadily checks its game score, assesses the environmental change with taking into consideration of the lastly earned scores, and initiates a new learning process when a change is detected. In multi-user games, including massively multiple on-line games, intelligent characters confront diverse opponents that have various action patterns and strategies depending on the gamers controlling the opponents. The group adaptation algorithm controls the birth of intelligent characters to conserve an equilibrium state of a game world by using a genetic algorithm. To show the performance of the proposed schemes, we implement a simple fighting action game and experiment on it with changing game rules and opponent characters' action patterns. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithms are able to make intelligent characters adapt themselves to the change.

A simple but accurate equivalent circuit of an aperture-coupled cavity-fed microstrip patch antenna is developed. It consists of ideal transformers, admittance elements, and transmission lines, and the related circuit element values are computed by applying the reciprocity theorem and complex power concept with the spectral-domain immittance approach. After validating by the published design example, a dual-band antenna was designed with the help of a hybrid optimization method. For this purpose, the Genetic Algorithm is applied with the Nelder-Mead simplex method. The obtained good results show that this approach turned out to be a very efficient tool for the design of aperture-coupled cavity-fed microstrip patch antenna having various structural design parameters.

The use of system identification approaches for damage detection has been expanded in recent years owing to the advancements in data acquisition system andinformation processing techniques. Soft computing techniques such as neural networks and genetic algorithm have been utilized increasingly for this end due to their excellent pattern recognition capability. In this study, damage detection of bridge structures using neural networks technique based on the modal properties is presented, which can effectively consider the modeling uncertainty in the analysis model from which the training patterns are to be generated. The differences or the ratios of the mode shape components between before and after damage are used as the input to the neural networks in this method, since they are found to be less sensitive to the modeling errors than the mode shapes themselves. Two numerical example analyses on a simple beam and a multi-girder bridge are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method.
