A Soil Mechanical Study for a Practical Application to Forest Road Construction (임도설계(林道設計)에의 응용(應用)을 위한 흙의 토질(土質) 역학적(力學的) 특성(特性))

  • This study was carried out to discuss how soils in the area planned for a forest road construction can be mechanically tested and practically applied. For this, 16 soil test samples from 8 plots(2 samples per plot) were used. The major tests are focused on unit weight before and after cut, water content, liquid and plastic limits, sieve and hydrometer analysis etc. The total unit weight(${\rho}_t$) before and after cut are $1.69g/cm^3$ and $1.19g/cm^3$, respectively. Their water contents are 21.0% and 20.5%. The coefficient of uniformity U and coefficient of curvature C obtained from sieve and hydrometer analysis are 125 and 0.42, which mean generally not well graded. On the soil classification by USCS, SM(silty sand or silt-sand mixed soil)is a Key soil, but it seems to be not good for fill material. From the standard proctor test are resulted $1.40{\pm}0.065g/cm^3$ for the unit weight(${\rho}$) in the nature and $1.88{\pm}0.049g/cm^3$ for the optimum proctor unit weight(${\rho}pr$) each. With this to say, it is necessary more powerful compaction work at earth filling, with which this soil reachs enough the ${\rho}pr$, and more earth.

A Study on Compaction Characteristics of Surplus Soils in Mountainous Areas in Busan, GyungNam Province (부산 경남지역 산지 현장 발생토의 다짐특성 연구)

  • Most of the industrial complexes and housing complexes in Busan and Gyeongnam were constructed by developing mountainous areas, except for some landfill areas. During the development process, the surplus soil for site development was mainly used as the embankment material. In the field, however, even if the material of the material changes during the embankment work for site development, for convenience reasons such as construction period and site conditions, the material property test and compaction test are not additionally conducted for the embankment material, and quality control is conducted. In this study, physical property tests and compaction tests were conducted on surplus soils in mountainous areas in Busan, GyungNam Province and then regression analysis was performed on the data. In addition, a comparative analysis was conducted along with existing studies in Korea. The surplus soils at the sites in Busan and Gyeongnam were mainly weathered soils of granites, and were classified into clayey sand (SC) and silty sand (SM). As a result of regression analysis of the compaction characteristics according to the content of coarse and fine soils, the correlation between them was very high. Using the relational formula as a result of this study, it will be very useful for compaction management of the surplus soils in the field.

A Study for Deriving Target CMV (Compaction Meter Value) of Intelligent Compaction Earthwork Quality Control (토공사 지능형 다짐 품질관리를 위한 목표 CMV(Compaction Meter Value) 도출 방안에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, the intelligent compaction technology for quality control of earthworks has brought attention as a quality control standard for earthworks. In this study, intelligent compaction technology and earthwork quality control methods were investigated and earthwork quality control procedures using intelligent compaction technology were considered based on field tests. Through the field compaction test of the silty sand (SM) fill material, it was confirmed that CMV and bearing capcaity index from plate load tests increased as the number of compactions increased. Based on the field test data, the average CMV and quality control target CMV were derived. The target CMV (34.2) was calculated through the correlation with the bearing capacity index of the plate load test, and the target CMV (36.6) was calculated through the analysis of the CMV increase rate. In this paper, the on-site compaction quality management procedure and methodology using intelligent compaction technology were discussed, and an intelligent compaction quality management method was proposed to promote the applicability of the technology.

Strength and Compaction Characteristics of Binder-Stabilized Subgrade Material in Ulsan Area - Main Binder Components : CaO and SO3 - (고화제로 안정처리 된 울산지역 노상재료의 강도 및 다짐특성 - 주 성분이 CaO와 SO3인 고화제 -)

  • In this study, the engineering properties including bearing capacity of subgrades stabilized with a binder are analyzed by laboratory and field experiments. The main components of the binder are CaO and $SO_3$. After the binder was mixed with a low plasticity clay, the passing rates were relatively decreased as the sieve mesh size increased. Not only did the soil type change to silty sand, but engineering properties, such as the plasticity index and modified California bearing ratio (CBR), were improved for the subgrade. A comparison of the compaction curves of the stabilized subgrade and field soil compacted with the same energy demonstrated an increase of approximately 6% in the maximum dry unit weight, slight decrease in optimum moisture content, and considerable increase improvement in grain size. In the modified CBR test, the effect of unit weight and strength increase of the modified soil (with a specific amount of binder) was remarkably improved. As the proportion of granulated material increased after the addition of binder, the swelling was reduced by 3.3 times or more during initial compaction and 6.5 times by final compaction. The unconfined compressive strength of the specimens was maintained at the homogeneous value with a constant design strength. The stabilized subgrade was validated by applying it in the field under the same conditions; this test demonstrated that the bearing capacity coefficients at all six sites after one day of compaction exceeded the target value and exhibited good variability.
