Modification of clay surface was attempted by treating the clay with bis[(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)tetra sulfide (TSS) to raise the hydrophobicity and to induce a chemical reaction between the clay and the high temperature vulcanization-type silicone rubber matrix with purpose of improving the compatibility between the components, and thereby Na-$MMTS_4$ and Fe-$MMTS_4$ were synthesized by treating Na-MMT and Fe-MMT with TSS, respectively. Silicone rubber/clay composites were prepared by compounding the clays with silicone rubber. Thermal stability and mechanical properties were evaluated as a function of the clay types and the surface modification.

Much quantity of anti-tracking agent, ATH is added to the silicone rubber for the protection of silicone rubber against surface discharge. Hydrophobicity recovery properties of silicone rubber could be different by the content, surface treatment state and particle size of ATH. Because hydrophobicity of silicone rubber is depend much on the surface state of ATH. In this paper, the properties of silicone rubber is investigated according to the addition of different particle size of ATH to the silicone rubber. Hydrophobicity recovery properties and arc resistance of silicone rubber were investigated according to the addition of different particle size of ATH. Hydrophobicity recovery properties of silicone rubber were evaluated by the measurement of contact angle.

Silicone rubber has very excellent chemical stability and hydrophobicity. A hydrophobic surface can prevent the formation of continuous water films on the surface in wet and heavily contaminated conditions. This phenomenon contributes to the suppression of leakage current and partial discharges on insulator surfaces. Silicone rubber has been used much for housing materials of polymer insulators. ATH is added to the silicone rubber for improvement of its resistance against surface discharge. In this paper, ATH with different particle size and content was added to the silicone rubber during compounding. Silicone rubber was deteriorated by a corona treatment. Hydrophobicity recovery rate after corona treatment and arc resistance of silicone rubber were investigated. Hydrophobicity recovery rate of silicone rubber was evaluated by the measurement of contact angle. Arc resistance was evaluated by measuring weight loss of silicone rubber after arc resistance test. It was observed that the hydrophobicity recovery rate and arc resistance of silicone rubber were different when different particle size and content of ATH were added.

This paper describes electrical resistivity, dielectric strength, thermal conductivity, thermal stability and tensile strength of mica sheet impregnated with silicone rubber resin or silicone rubber resin containing alumina powder. The mica sheet impregnated with silicone rubber resin had higher electrical resistivity, dielectric strength and tensile strength than those of virgin mica sheet. Electrical resistivity of mica sheet impregnated with silicone rubber resin containing alumina increased with increasing the amount of alumina. However, dielectric strength and tensile strength of mica sheet impregnated with silicone rubber resin containing alumina decreased with increasing the amount of alumina. The mica sheet impregnated with silicone rubber resin had lower thermal conductivity than that of virgin mica sheet. However, thermal conductivity of mica sheet impregnated with silicone rubber resin conatining alumina increased with increasing the amount of alumina. In the case of thermal stability, thermal degradation of virgin mica sheet and impregnated mica sheet with silicone rubber resin did not occur up to $1100^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$, respectively.
In this study, the effects of filler particle size and shape on the physical properties of silicone rubber composites were investigated using inorganic fillers (Minusil 5, Celite 219, and Nyad 400) except silica, which was already present as a reinforcing filler of silicone rubber. Fillers with small particle sizes are known to facilitate the formation of the bound rubber by increasing the contact area with the polymer. However, in this experiment, the bound rubber content of Celite 219-added silicone composite was higher than that of Minusil 5-added silicone composite. This was attributed to the porous structure of Celite 219, which led to an increase in the internal surface area of the filler. When the inorganic fillers were added, both thermal decomposition temperature and thermal stability were improved. The bound rubber formed between the silicone rubber and inorganic filler affected the degree of crosslinking of the silicone composite. It is well-known that as the size of the reinforcing filler decreases, the reinforcing effect increases. However, in this experiment, the hardness of the composite material filled with Celite 219 was the highest compared to the other three composites. Furthermore, the highest value of 2.19 MPa was observed for 100% modulus, and the fracture elongation was the lowest at 469%. This was a result of excellent interaction between Celite 219 filler and silicone rubber.
The characteristic of silicone rubber can be seen from its resistance to both low and high temperature, whereas HNBR is resistant only in high temperature moderatly although it can be compounded to give good tensile properties, good oil resistance while silicone rubber severely lacks in these qualities. This study was initiated a balance of properties by blending HNBR and silicone rubber which is not considered for commercial blending; blends of HNBR with silicone rubber tend to show immiscible due to dissimilar nature of silicone and HNBR, the possibility of phase separation cannot be ruled out, in unfilled system after vulcanisation leading to premature failure. Attempt has been made to improve compatibility and minimise the layer seperation by the use of compatibilizer. Both filled and unfilled systems, in presence and absence of compatibilizer have been studied. Improvement in tensile properties of the blends or are observed as compared to the non-blended rubber. Different ratios of HNBR and silicone rubber are represented in this study. Blends of HNBR with silicone rubber were immiscible system. The tensile strength increased with filler loading.

Blends of silicone rubber (VMQ) and liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) were prepared by the melt mixing technique. Mechanical, XRD, thermal and dynamic mechanical investigations are reported for the pure silicone rubber and blends. The mechanical properties, viz. the tensile strength, tear strength and elongation at break, of the silicone rubber decreased with the addition of LCP. The SEM study on the tensile fractured surface of the blends revealed that they had a two phase structure, and that the failure was mainly due to fiber pull out, which suggests that the VMQ and LCP are incompatible in all of the proportions examined in this study. However, the FTIR study shows that there was a partial interaction between the VMQ and LCP, but which may not be sufficient to grip the fibrils under the applied load. In the XRD analysis, it was observed that the crystalline structure of the silicone rubber deteriorated in the presence of LCP. The DMA study suggested that the storage modulus of the silicone rubber was improved with the addition of LCP, due to the high modulus of the LCP phase. The thermal stability of the silicone rubber was greatly reduced by the addition of LCP, due to the latter having a thermal stability lower than that of silicone rubber.

In this work, the effects of plasma treatment on surface properties of semi conductive silicone rubber were investigated in terms of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). The adhesion characteristics of semiconductive-insulating interface layer of silicone rubber were studied by measuring the T-peel strengths. As a result, semiconductive silicone rubber surfaces treated with plasma discharge led to and increase in oxygen-containing functional groups, resulting in improving the degree of adhesion of the semiconductive-insulating interface layer of silicone rubber. these results are probably due to the modifications of surface functional groups or polar component of surface free energy of the semi conductive silicone rubber.
Silicone rubber composite is very suitable for insulation materials because of it's hydrophobicity, mass productivity, and design flexibility. A study of the diffusion of silicone fluid from the bulk to the surface of the silicone rubber composite using dynamic contact angle meter and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) is reported. A study of the mechanical strength of the silicone rubber composite having various silicone fluids and fluid contents is also reported. It has been found that the kind of silicone fluid affects the diffusion rate of the silicone fluid from the bulk to the surface of the silicone rubber composite after artificial pollution.
A description is given of impregnated silicone rubber used in accessories for application on outdoor termination (EB-A). We examines the effects of swelling and mechanical/electrical characteristics for impregnated silicone rubber to develop slip on type sleeve of silicone material. There are semi-conductive silicone rubber and insulation silicone rubber. This examination is monitored as a function of the viscosity and temperature of oil during 30hr. We measure elongation at breakdown and AC breakdown strength and volume resistivities of the oil-impregnated silicone rubbers. The measured values are compared to initial value as function of stress relief cone.
