  • For the purpose of rolling hard metals such as silicon steel and non-ferrous metals, the backup roll driven-type mill has been widely used in cold rolling industry. Since the backup roll drive results in horizontal bending of the work rolls and therefore exerted reciprocal action on the roll gap contour, the selection of slim work rolls is very restricted. In this paper, we present an analytic equation based scheme to determine a proper horizontal position of work roll minimizing the horizontal force subject to mechanical constraints.

  • Taguchi methods have been used for a long time to improve the product quality and process performance of a manufacturing system, Few researchers have applied this methodology in laser beam cutting (LBC) of sheet metals and found the considerable improvement in cut qualities. In all experimental investigations of LBC so far, the objective was to optimize the single quality characteristic at a time. In this paper the simultaneous optimization of multiple quality characteristics such as Kerf width and material removal rate (MRR) during pulsed Nd:YAG LBC of thin sheet of magnetic material (high Silicon-steel) has been presented using Taguchi's quality loss function. The results show the considerable improvement in multiple S/N ratio as compared to initial cutting condition. Also, the comparison of results from single and multi-objective optimization have been presented and it was found that the loss in quality is always possible shifting from single quality to multiple quality optimization.

  • A lot of rotating machinery are generally used in industrial field and the electrical machinery such as the motor and generator account for the most of the part. Generally motor and generator have electrical loss because of eddy current. So silicon steel sheets are used in order to reduce the electrical loss and furthermore laminated rotor is used for motor and generator to eliminate the electrical loss and heat generation. However, the more high speed, large scale and high precision of the system, the more important to estimate the critical speed. In this paper verifies the variation of the critical speeds in accordance with the variation of the pressing force of lamination plate for the rotor which is supported by ball bearing with the experimental data as well.

Aging Test of 20kVA Amorphous Core Transformer by Loading Back Method (부하반환법에 의한 20KVA 비정질 변압기의 경년열화 연구)

  • Aging test was done by loading back method for 20kVA amorphous core transformers manufactured by Hyosung Industries Co. and korea Electric Power Corporation. Iron losses, copper losses and insulation oil temperatures of the transfromers was measured for all the testing period. Expected life of amorphous core transformers on the basis of the degradation of the insulators was 46 years at 100% load, and 2.4 years at 130% load. Average temperature rising of transformer oil of amorphous core transformers was higher than that of silicon steel core transformers. Hence lowering the oil temperature by optimized design is needed for improving the expected life of the amorphous transformers.

Tribological Characteristics of MoS$_2$Coatings in High Vacuum

  • The friction and wear behavior of MoS$_2$coatings was investigated using a pin and disk type tester. The experiment was conducted with silicon nitride as the pin material and MoS$_2$-on-bearing steel as the disk material under different operating conditions that included linear sliding velocities within a range of 2266 mm/sec, normal loads varying from 9.829.4 N, corresponding to maximum contact pressures of 1.782.83 Gpa, and high vacuum, medium vacuum, and ambient air atmospheric conditions. The results showed a low friction coefficient far the coating in a high vacuum, plus the friction coefficient and wear volume increased with an increased normal load. Furthermore, under high load conditions, the friction coefficient and wear volume also increased with an increased sliding velocity.

Ac Hysteresis Loop Depending on the Phase Angle of the Higher Harmonic Induction

  • For the design of high efficiency electric machines, analysis of higher harmonic frequency components of the magnetic induction is necessary. We have measured ac magnetic properties of non-oriented silicon steel under harmonic frequencies ranging from $3^rd$ (180 Hz) to $9^th$(540 Hz) and harmonic amplitude components from 10% to 50% of the total amplitude ($B_max$=1.5T). From the experiment, it is found that, if the magnetic induction waveform has above $9^th$ harmonic frequency components of the magnetic induction, the core losses only depended on the harmonic amplitude component, but if harmonic frequency becomes lower than 9th harmonic frequency, the core losses depend on the phase angle and the harmonic amplitude, and phase angle should be considered in the design of electric machine.

Effects of Deposition Variables on Plasma-Assisted CVD of TiN Films (TiN박막의 증착특성에 미치는 플라즈마 화학증착변수들의 영향)

  • TiN films were deposited onto high speed steel(SKH9) and silicon wafer by plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition(PACVD) using a TiCl4/N2/H2/Ar gas mixture. The effects of deposition temperature, R.F. power, and H2 concentration on the deposition of TiN were studied. The residual chlorine content and the microhardness of TiN films were also investigated. It was found that TiN films grew with a columnar structure of a strong (200) preferred orientation regardless of the substrate type and the deposition variables. The TiN films consisted of columnar-grains of about 50 to 100 nm in diameter. The columnar grains themselves contained much finer fibrous grains. As deposition temperature increased, the residual chlorine content decreased sharply. R. F. powder enhanced the deposition rate largely. Increasing of H2 concentration had little effect on the residual chlorine.

  • Recently, the uses of Ceramic/metal bonded joints, resin/metal joints, adhesive joints, composite materials which are composed of dissimiliar materials have increased in various industry fields. Since the ceramic/metal bonded joints material is made at a high temperature, residual stress distributions due to differences in material properties were investigated by varying material parameters. The two dimensional finite element analysis was performed to study residual stress distribution in Si3N4/SM45C bonded joint with a copper interlayer between the silicon nitride(Si3N4) and the structural carbon steel(SM45C) and 4-point bending tests were carried out under room temperature. Fracture surface and crack propagation path were observed using scanning electron microscope and characteristics of its fracture was discussed.

  • Recently, developments in the frontier industry have brought a rapid increase in the use of brittle materials such as silicon wafer, ferrite, sintered carbide, MgO single crystal and die steel. Because of high hardness and brittleness the cracking and chipping are apt to generate in the grinding of brittle materials, but have replaced gradually the high precision grinding. In this study, the optimum system of in-process electrolytic dressing controlled by computer was developed for improving the defects, and could maintain the optimum dressing condition at all times. The control of in-process dressing was simplified using this system, was able to maintain a stable dressing current and was unrelated to the change of dressing condition according to the variation of gap and oxide layer. Therefore, the optimum in-process electrolytic dressing system was constructed and the analysis of grinding mechanism with this system was studied.
