Supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) such as fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag and silica fume are now being extensively used in concrete to control expansion due to alkali-silica reactivity (ASR). However, the replacement level of a single SCM needed to deleterious ASR expansion and cracking may create other problem and concerns. For example, incorporating silica fume at levels greater than 10% by mass of cement may lead to dispersion and workability concerns, while fly ash can lead to poor strength development at early age, The combination of silica fume and fly ash in ternary cementitious system may alleviate this and other concerns, and result in a number of synergistic effects. The aim of the study was to enable evaluation of more realistic suitability of a silica fume-fly ash combination system for ASR resistance based on an in-house modification of ASTM C 1260 test method. The modification can be more closely identified with actual field conditions. In this study three different strengths of NaOH test solution(1N, 0.5N, and 0.25N) were used to measure the expansion characteristics of mortar bar made with a reactive aggregate. The other variable included longer testing period of 28 days instead of a conventional 14 days.
With the steady depletion off fossil fuel reserves, hydrogen based energy sources become increasingly attractive. Therefore hydrogen production or separation technologies, such as Bas separation membrane based on adsorption technology, have received enormous attention in the industrial and academic fields. In this study, the transport mechanisms of the MTES (methyltriethoxysilane) templating silica/a-alumina composite membrane were evaluated by using unary, binary and quaternary hydrogen gas mixtures permeation experiments at unsteady- and steady-states. Since the permeation flux in the MTES membrane, through the experimental and theoretical study, was affected by molecular sieving effects as well as surface diffusion properties, the kinetic and equilibrium separation should be considered simultaneously in the membrane according to molecular properties. In order to depict the transient multi-component permeation on the templating silica membrane, the GMS (generalized Maxwell-Stefan) and DGM (dust Bas model) were adapted to unsteady-state material balance

Effectiveness of the microparticle retention systems in improving drainage, retention, formation has been recognized for many years. In this study the effectiveness of crosslinked cationic corn starches and silica-based microgels as components of Compozil system has been evaluated. It was shown that improvements in retention and strength could be achieved by employing crosslinked cationic corn starches especially at high conductivity. Silica-based microgels with better performance in retention and drainage than a commercial colloidal silica sol have been made through a reaction of sulfuric acid and sodium silicate solutions.

Bentonite-based grouting has been popularly used to seal a borehole installed for a closed-loop vertical ground heat exchanger in a geothermal heat pump system (GHP) because of its high swelling potential and low hydraulic conductivity. The bentonite-based grout, however, has relatively lower thermal conductivity than that of ground formation. Accordingly, it is common to add some additives such as silica sand to the bentonite-based grout for enhancing thermal performance. In this study, graphite is adapted to substitute silica sand as an addictive because graphite has very high thermal conductivity. The effect of graphite on the thermal conductivity of bentonite-based grouts has been quantitatively evaluated for seven bentonite grouts from different product sources. In addition, comparisons of viscosity between applications of graphite and silica sand as additives has been carried out. In conclusion, using graphite has thermal conductivity about three times higher than that of silica sand.
This study demonstrates a method for synthesis of amine functionalized and easily size controllable silica nanoparticles through biomimetic polyamine complex. First, we generate a polyamine nanocomplex composed of polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) and phosphate ion (pi) to synthesize silica nanoparticles. The size of polyamine nanocomplex is reversibly adjusted within the range of about 50 to 300 nm according to the pH conditions. Amine groups of the PAH in the nanocomplex catalyzes the condensation reaction of silicic acid. As a results, silica nanoparticles are synthesized based on nanocomplex in a very short time. Finally, we synthesize silica nanoparticles with various sizes according to the pH conditions. In the process of synthesizing silica nanoparticles, polyamine chains that act as catalysts are incorporated into the inside and surface of the particles, subsequently, amine groups are exposed on the surface of silica nanoparticles. As a results, the synthesis and surface modification of silica nanoparticles are performed simultaneously, and the silica nanoparticles introduced with amine groups can be easily synthesized by adjusting the sizes of the silica nanoparticles. Finally, we demonstrate the synthesis of functional silica nanoparticles in a short time under milder conditions than the conventional synthetic method. Furthermore, this method can be applicable to bioengineering and materials fields.
In this article, by using experimental studies and artificial neural network has been tried to investigate the use of nano-silica as concrete admixture to reduce alkali-silica reaction. If there are reactive aggregates and alkali of cement with enough moisture in concrete, a gel will be formed. Then with high reactivity between alkali of cement and existence of silica in aggregates, this gel will expand by absorption of water, and causes expansive pressure and cracks be formed. At the time passes, this gel will reduce both durability and strength of the concrete. By reducing the size of silicate to nano, specific surface area of particles and number of atoms on the surface will be increased, which causes more pozzolanic activity of them. Nano-silica can react with calcium hydroxide ($Ca(OH)_2$) and produces C-S-H gel. In this study, accelerated mortar bar specimens according to ASTM C 1260 and ASTM C 1567, with different mix proportions were prepared using aggregates of Kerman, such as: none admixture and plasticizer, different proportions of nano-silica separately. By opening the moulds after 24 hour and curing in water at $80^{\circ}C$ for 24 hour, then curing in (1N NaOH) at $80^{\circ}C$ for 14 days, length expansion of mortar bars were measured and compared. It was noted that, the lowest length expansion of a specimens shows the best proportion of admixture based on alkali-silica reactivity. Then, prediction of alkali-silica reaction of concrete has been investigated by using artificial neural network. In this study the backpropagation network has been used and compared with different algorithms to train network. Finally, the best amount of nano silica for adding to mix proportion, also the best algorithm and number of neurons in hidden layer of artificial neural network have been offered.
In this study, we demonstrated a silica nanofibrous membrane based on the electrospinning process and evaluated its DNA isolation and purification performance in PCR pretreatment. Generally, silica membranes made of non-woven fabric are used for PCR pretreatment, but this study aimed to improve the efficiency of the pretreatment process by developing a nanofiber-type silica membrane with high specific surface area and porosity. In order to manufacture a nanofiber-shaped silica film while maintaining the original physical properties of silica, nanofiber membranes produced by adding various concentrations of PEO (5 wt%, 8 wt%, and 10 wt%) to silica prepared by the sol-gel method were compared. In terms of nanofiber membrane production, the higher the PEO concentration, the more effective it was in producing nanofiber membranes. The produced silica nanofiber membrane was inserted to a pretreatment device used in commercial PCR equipment, and the pretreatment performance was compared and verified using Salmonella bacteria. When Salmonella was used, samples containing 5 wt% PEO showed superior PCR efficiency compared to samples containing 8 wt% and 10 wt% PEO. These results show that adding 5 wt% of PEO can effectively improve DNA purification and separation by producing a nanofiber-shaped silica film while maintaining the physical properties of silica. We expect that this study will contribute to the development of effective PCR pretreatment technology essential for various molecular biology applications.
This study investigates the influence of nano-silica and basalt fiber content, curing duration, and freeze-thaw cycles on the static and dynamic properties of soil specimens. A comprehensive series of tests, including Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), static triaxial, and dynamic triaxial tests, were conducted. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis was employed to examine the microstructure of treated specimens. Results indicate that a combination of 1% fiber and 10% nano-silica yields optimal soil enhancement. The failure patterns of specimens varied significantly depending on the type of additive. Static triaxial tests revealed a notable reduction in the brittleness index (IB) with the inclusion of basalt fibers. Specimens containing 10% nano-silica and 1% fiber exhibited superior shear strength parameters and UCS. The highest cohesion and friction angle were obtained for treated specimens with 10% nano-silica and 1% fiber, 90 kPa and 37.8°, respectively. Furthermore, an increase in curing time led to a significant increase in UCS values for specimens containing nano-silica. Additionally, the addition of fiber resulted in a decrease in IB, while the addition of nano-silica led to an increase in IB. Increasing nano-silica content in stabilized specimens enhanced shear modulus while decreasing the damping ratio. Freeze-thaw cycles were found to decrease the cohesion of treated specimens based on the results of static triaxial tests. Specimens treated with 10% nano-silica and 1% fiber experienced a reduction in shear modulus and an increase in the damping ratio under freeze-thaw conditions. SEM analysis reveals dense microstructure in nano-silica stabilized specimens, enhanced adhesion of soil particles and fibers, and increased roughness on fiber surfaces.
This study was performed to evaluate the effect of resin and filler type on the compressive strength of light-activated composite resins. Experimental composite resins containing either amorphous spherical silica or crushed quartz in two matrix resins of BisGMA/TEGDMA and UTMA/TEGDMA were prepared and the specimens of 3 m in diameter and 6m in length were made. Compressive test was subjected to a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min, and the fracture surFaces were examined by SEM. The compressive strength of UTMA-based composite resin was higher than that of BisGMA-based composite resin. The loading rate of spherical silica was higher than that of crushed silica when the size dis- tribution of fillers was same. Strength decrease of Bis-GMA-based composite resin was severer than that of UTMA-based composite resin in a $37^{\circ}$c water environment. Fracture surface showed that the composite resin failure developed along the matrix resin and the filler/resin interface region.
