Sulfate Resistance of Alkali Activated Pozzolans

  • The consequence of sulfate attack on geopolymer concrete, made from an alkali activated natural pozzolan (AANP) has been studied in this paper. Changes in the compressive strength, expansion and capillary water absorption of specimens have been investigated combined with phases determination by means of X-ray diffraction. At the end of present investigation which was to evaluate the performance of natural alumina silica based geopolymer concrete in sodium and magnesium sulfate solution, the loss of compressive strength and percentage of expansion of AANP concrete was recorded up to 19.4 % and 0.074, respectively.

Adsorption of Ruthenium on the alkaline Earth Metal Compounds (알카리토금속 화합물에 의한 루테늄의 흡착)

  • Many materials such as silica gel, metallic oxide, activated alumina and alkaline earth metal carbonates were employed as filter media for gaseous oxides of ruthenium volatilized during high level radioactive waste processing. The adsorption efficiency of ruthenium on these materials was evaluated. For the purpose of observing behavior of ruthenium oxides, thermogravimetric analysis of ruthenium oxide in a stream of oxygen was carried out. The rate of volatilization was proportional to the square root of oxygen partial pressure, and increased exponentially with temperature. At $650^{\circ}C$, gaseous ruthenium oxides showed a strongly marked effect of deposition. Of all the materials available, calcium oxide proved to be the best that could be used to adsorb ruthenium.

  • We examined various ball-milling parameters which affect the structural and morphological modification of multi-wall carbon nanotubes. In particular, the effect of milling mode and the use of different milling agents were examined. Friction milling mode induced more structural changes than impact milling mode except the use of dry ice as a milling agent. Wet milling was helpful for reducing more effectively the agglomeration of nanotubes than dry milling. The use of hard solid particles such as silica and alumina as milling agents resulted in an effective shortening of nanotubes, but often susceptible to the amorphization and the destruction of crystallinity.

  • AF-011A is a novel lipopeptide with potent antifungal activity isolated from Pseudomonas cepacia AF6008 deposited as KFCC 10759. The compound was isolated from the fermentation broth by extraction with 50% isopropyl alcohol. Purification was effected by chromatography on Diaion HP-20, Alumina and C18 followed by HPTLC on silica gel. These techniques affored two closelt related compounds. AF-011A1 ans AF-011A2. The molecular weights of AF-011A1/A2 were determined by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry(A1 m/z 1,215 : A2 m/z 1,199).

  • A study on the synthesis of zeolite from bituminous coal ESP fly ash as a raw material, which was emitted from the power plant, was carried out to reduce environmental problems and reuse of the industrial wastes. Bituminous coal fly ash was used as the source of silica and alumina. Zeolite was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction in aqueous NaOH solution with sodium aluminate as additive. The objective of this study is to elucidate the effect of several experimental variables on the synthesis of zeolite. The effects of preroasting temperature, mixing speed, leaching alkalinity, and molar ratio of Na$_{2}$O/SiO$_{2}$ and SiO$_{2}$/Al$_{2}$O of the products were investigated. The synthesized zeolite was proved to be NaA, which is known as 4A type, by comparing with SEM images, and X-ray diffraction analysis. And also we know that the transformation of zeolite A take places into other types of zeolites, i.e. Hydroxysodalite, zeolite P, with the variation of leaching alkalinity.

  • Red mud is a waste material formed during the production of alumina when the bauxite ore is subjected to caustic leaching. It is a brick-red colored highly alkaline (pH 10-12) sludge containing mostly oxides of iron, aluminum, titanium, and silica. Red mud, due to its high aluminum, iron, and calcium contents, has been suggested as a cheap adsorbent for removal of toxic metals (e.g., As, Cr, Pb, Cd) as well as for water or wastewater treatment. The basic advantage of red mud is its versatility in application. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of red mud on stabilization and fixation of heavy metals (such as Pb, Cu, C $r^{6+}$, Cd, Zn) contained in the Al-coating sludge and soil. The results showed that the concentration of heavy metals leached from the treated sludge and soil was low, meeting the regulatory permit level.

  • Y-TZP/mullite composites were prepared by the infiltration of Y-TZP precursor into partially reaction-sintered mullite. The addition of Y-TZP(~7.2 wt%) increased the bend strength(207 MPa), fracture toughness(4.6MPa.m1/2) and Vickers microhardness(853kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$) of the uninfiltrated mullite sintered at 162$0^{\circ}C$ for 10h by more than 75, 70 and 105%, respectively. Residual alumina-rich glass was observed at a mullite/mullite junction, due to the mullitization reaction of silica melt with crystalline $\alpha$-Al2O3 during a final sintering. Although ZrO2 inclusions improved the final sintered density of mullite they did not effectively prevent its grain growth.

  • 고온용 세라믹 쉘 몰드를 용융 알루미나와 콜로이달 실리카를 사용하여 제조한 후, 세라믹 쉘 몰드의 강도에 영향을 주는 요인을 분석하였다. 세라믹 쉘 몰드의 강도는 바인더의 실리카 입자의 크기가 작을수록 크며 또한 실리카 농도에 비례하여 증가함을 보이며 저온에서의 강도 발현은 콜로이달 실리카의 필름 형성에 의한 입자들의 결합임을 알 수 있었다. 세라믹 쉘 몰드의 소성 강도는 부착 스타코의 크기가 작을수록 크며 소성 온도에 비례하여 증가함을 보였다. 고온에서의 강도 발현은 알루미나 입자와 콜로이달 실리카 바인더의 결합뿐만 아니라 알루미나 입자사이의 결합도 영향을 줌을 알 수 있었다. 쉘 몰드의 결정상은 130$0^{\circ}C$이하에서 소성한 경우 $\alpha$-알루미나만 존재함을 보여 실리카는 비정질로 계속 남아 있음을 알 수 있고 140$0^{\circ}C$ 이상에서 소성한 경우 뮬라이트가 생성됨을 보였다.

  • To ceramic film, $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$, coated on pure Fe and stainless steel(SUS41O) by RF magnetron sputtering, the adherence between mm and substarte was studied. The adherence index (${\chi}$) was determined by the measure of micro hardness test. Also, the corrosion resistance on oxide coatings was studied using electrochemical measurement. The main results obtained are as the following: 1) In the micro-hardness test, with $1{\mu}m$ thickness mm, it has only one the value of ${\chi}$. Above $2{\mu}$thickness fIlm, however, get another value of ${\chi}$as the cracks in fIlm. 2) The oxide fIlm adhere well on the mild materials such as pure steel than high intensity materials like stainless. 3) Alumina($Al_2O_3$) coated materials have better corrosion resistance than silica($SiO_2$)coated materials

  • A study was made of the effect of composition changes and particle size on appearance of raw bristol glazes fired at cones 5, 8, and 11. Alumina and silica, alkali and lime variations were made to get some of the more promising glazes determining maturing ranges, modulus of rupture, and other factors such as gloss, smoothness, opacity, eggshelling, crazing, pinholing and crawling for each glaze. Modulus of rupture was measured for the glazes fired at only cone 11.
