Silica microsphere is a world leading innovative material used in adsorbent packing materials in HPLC technology. The application of microsphere lies in the ability to the surface modification of silica with the special materials such as polymers, metals and bio-active materials. Collagen is a major structural protein of connective tissues and has a good biocompatibility. In this study, we prepared the purified silica porous microsphere, having micro diameters in the range of a pore volume at least 50% by the aggregation procedure of colloidal silica with the polymerization method (PICA). The microspheres were modified by collagen hydrogel to improve the biocompatible properties for biomedical product. The silica/collagen microsphere composite doped with silver nanoparticles was prepared and investigated the capabilities of biomaterial application through the evaluation of the structure characteristics of the microsphere composit.
Monodispersed colloidal silica was prepared by Stober process. We have synthesized monodispersed colloidal silica of carious sizes (100 nm, 200 nm, 300 nm) by controlling volume ratios of TEOS(Tetraethylorthosilicate), $NH_4OH$, Ethanol and D. I. water. Shape and monodispersity of the synthesized colloidal particles were observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) and laser light scattering particle analyzer. Self-assembled monolayer of monodispersed colloids was achieved by dipping Si substrate into a well-dispersed silica suspension. It was determined that uniformity and spatial extent of the self-assemble monolayer of monodispersed colloids are significantly influenced by the experimental parameters such as concentration, pH and surface tension of the colloidal suspension. We have observed a hexagonally well-ordered packing colloidal monolayer in a relatively large area (1.5 mm ${\times}$ 1.5 mm) as confirmed by SEM.
FePt nanoparticles suspension was synthesized by reduction of platinum acetylacetonate and decomposition of iron pentacarbonyl in the presence of oleic acid and oleyl amine. FePt nanoparticles were coated on a substrate by convective assembly from the suspension. To prevent the coalescence during the annealing of FePt nanoparticles double convective coatings were tried. First convective coating was for silica particle assembly on a silicon substrate and second one was for FePt nanoparticles on the previously coated silica layers. It was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that FePt nanoparticles were dispersed on the silica particle surface. After annealing at $700^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes under nitrogen atmosphere, FePt nanoparticles on silica particles were maintained in a dispersed state with slight increase of particle size. On the contrary, FePt nanoparticles that were directly coated on silicon substrate showed severe particle growth after annealing due to the close-packing of nanoparticles during assembly. The size variation during annealing was also verified by X-ray diffractometer (XRD). It was suggested that pre-coating, which offered solvent flux oppose to the capillary force between FePt nanoparticles, was an effective method to prevent coalescence of nano-sized particles under high temperature annealing.

Generally, ceramic tiles for building construction are manufactured by dry forming process using granular powders prepared by spray drying process after mixing and grinding of mineral raw materials. In recent years, as the demand for large ceramic tiles with natural texture has increased, the development of granule powders with high packing ratio and excellent flowability has become more important. In this study, ceramic tile granule powders are coated with hydrophobically treated silica nanoparticles. The effects of hydrophobic silica coating on the flowability of granule powders and the strength of the green body are investigated in detail. Silica nanoparticles are hydrophobically treated with GPTMS(3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxy silane), which is an epoxy-based silane coupling agent. As the coating concentration increases, the angle of repose and the compressibility decrease. The tap density and flowability index increase after silica coating treatment. These results indicate that hydrophobic treatment can improve the flowability of the granular powder, and prevent cracking of green body at high pressure molding.
Modispersed silica fine particles were produced from the hydrolysis of $Si(OC_2H_5)_4$ by using batch-semibatch mixed systems. Four types of mixed process, i.e., batch-batch, batch-semibatch, semibatch-batch, semibatch-semibatch, were used in order to measure mean particle size, particle size distribution, yield, and packing density. As a result of the test, silica particles prepared by semibatch-semibatch process were larger than those prodeced from any other systems in particle size and yield. On the other hand, silica particles prepared by batch-semibatch process were better than those produced from any other systems in particle size distribution and packing density. Especially, it was found that particle size of $SiO_2$ prepared by semibatch-batch process decreased with increasing the reaction time. Therefore, batch-semibatch process was a successful method for controlling the size, i.e., a narrow distribution of a particle size which ranges to several microns.
Ceramic tapes were fabricated by ultrasonically spraying slurries of monodispersed spherical and alumina powders. Effects of slurry compositions on tape forming were investigated. A relatively fast rate of solvent evaporation caused pores and cracks to be formed. A good chemical affinity between solvent and binder gave rise to binder separation resulting in inhomogeneous distribution of binder. Defect-free silica tapes with uniform distribution of particle packing and the binder were obtained from the solvent having a low chemical affinity and a slow evaporation rate and containing appropriate amounts of the binder and the plasticizer. Tape thickness could be controlled by adjusting solids loadings and slurry feed rates. It was possible to fabricate a tape in 15 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness from 7 vol% alumina slurry.
Uniform silica nanobeads were synthesized by St$\ddot{o}$ber method and assembled in the form of monolayer on glass substrate using sonication method. Before the assembly of silica nanobeads, glass substrates were treated with molecular linkers, such as CP-TMS and PEI, and nanobeads were dispersed in toluene. In attachment test, SO (sonication without stacking) method and SS (sonnication with stacking) method was used and sonication time was controled. After the experiment, microbalance was use to measure deviation between before and after the attachment experiment then calculate percent of coverage. Minutely observe with SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) then select the most close-packed and monolayer assembled cover glass and calculate DOC (Degree of Coverage). In SO method, DOC increased very sharply and reach over 140 percent point, also got lots of multi-layer region. On the other hand, in SS method DOC increased slower than SO method but more close-packed and monolayer assembled.
This article provides comprehensive guidance on the maintenance, cleaning, regeneration, and storage of silica-based HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) columns. The general considerations emphasize the importance of using in-line filters and guard cartridges to protect columns from blockage and irreversible sample adsorption. While these measures help, contamination by strongly adsorbed sample components can still occur over time, leading to an increase in back pressure, loss of efficiency, and other issues. To maximize column lifetime, especially with UHPLC (Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography) columns, it is advisable to use ultra-pure solvents, freshly prepared aqueous mobile phases, and to filter all samples, standards, and mobile phases. Additionally, an in-line filter system and sample clean-up on dirty samples are recommended. However, in cases of irreversible compound adsorption or column voiding, regeneration may not be possible. The document also provides specific recommendations for column cleaning procedures, including the flushing procedures for various types of columns such as reversed phase, unbonded silica, bonded normal phase, anion exchange, cation exchange, and size exclusion columns for proteins. The flushing procedures involve using specific solvents in a series to clean and regenerate the columns. It is emphasized that the flow rate during flushing should not exceed the specified limit for the particular column, and the last solvent used should be compatible with the mobile phase. Furthermore, the article outlines the storage conditions for silica based HPLC columns, highlighting the impact of storage conditions on the column's lifetime. It is recommended to flush all buffers, salts, and ion-pairing reagents from the column before storage. The storage solvent should ideally match the one used in the initial column test chromatogram provided by the manufacturer, and column end plugs should be fitted to prevent solvent evaporation and drying out of the packing bed.

Nitrate is a common contaminant in groundwater aquifer. The present study investigates the performance of the bipolar zero valent iron (ZVI, $Fe^0$) packed bed electrolytic cell in removing nitrate in different operating conditions. The packing mixture consists of ZVI as electronically conducting material and silica sand as non-conducting material between main cathode and anode electrodes. In the continuous experiments for the simulated wastewater (contaminated groundwater, initial nitrate about 30 mg/L as N and electrical conductivity about 300 ${\mu}S/cm$), over 99% removal of nitrate was achieved in the applied voltage 600 V and at the flow rate of 20 mL/min. The optimum packing ratio (v/v) and flow rate were determined to be 1:1~2:1 (silica sand to ZVI), 30 mL/ min respectively. Effluent pH was proportional to nitrate influx concentration, and ammonia which is the final product of nitrate reduction was about 60% of nitrate influx. Magnetite was observed on the surface of the used ZVI as major oxidation product.
Zircon, having excellent thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties, is utilized in refractory materials, electronic materials, chemical machines, structural materials, etc. However, zircon generally shows thermal dissociation to zirconia($ZrO_2$) and silica($SiO_2$) around the sintering temperature of $1540^{\circ}C$, and when zircon particles are small and impurities are present, thermal dissociation is known to occur at around $1100^{\circ}C$. This reduces the mechanical properties of $ZrSiO_4$. In this research, the effect of adding $SiO_2$ and 3Y-TZP to $ZrSiO_4$ has been studied in order to suppress dissociation and improve the mechanical properties. Addition of $SiO_2$ suppressed the dissociation of $ZrSiO_4$ at lower temperatures. It also enabled optimum packing between the particles, resulting in a dense microstructure and good mechanical properties. When 3Y-TZP was added, recombination with the dissociated $SiO_2$ resulted in good mechanical properties by suppressing the generation of pores and the densification of the microstructure.
