  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the physical properties of experimental composite resins made with the spherical and crushed fillers. The 14 experimental composite resins containing 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25%(w/w) in spherical filler group and 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70%(w/w) in crushed filler group, incorporated in a Bis-GMA matrix (Aldrich Co., USA), were made with 1% ${\gamma}$-methoxy silane treated fillers. The polymer matrix was made by dissolving 0.7%(w/w) of benzoyl peroxide(Janssen Chemical Co. Japan) in methacrylate monomer, whereupon 0.7%(v/v) N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine(Tokyo Kasei Co. Japan) was added to the monomer. The weight percentage of each specific particle size distribution could be determined from a knowledge of the specific gravity, the weight(w/w), and corresponding volume %(v/v) of the filler sample in resin monomer. In crushed silica group and spherical silica group, the diametral tensile strengths and compressive strengths were measured with Instron Testing Machine(No.4467), and analyzed in 14 experimental composite resins made by filler fractions. The shear bond strength of 14 experimental composite resins to bovine enamel was measured with universal testing machine(Instron No.4467). The fracture surfaces were sputter-coated with a gold film and investigated by SEM. The results were as follows; 1. The diametral tensile strength was tendency to increase in crushed silica group, but not in spherical silica group. The highest diametral tensile strength was found in 20% filler fractions of two groups. 2. The compressive strength was higher in 15%(w/w) and 20%(w/w) in spherical silica group than in crushed silica group, but not in spherical silica group. 3. The significant correlation was noticed in increase in shear bond strength in crushed silica group, but not in spherical silica group. 4. The significantly highest shear bond strength was noticed in 50% filler concentration in crushed silica group, and in 15% filler concentration in spherical silica group, it was not significant in relation. 5. In crushed silica group, cut surface of resin matrix and the interface between resin and filler is obvious. In spherical silica group, fractures that occurred through the filler particles were round in shape.

  • In this study, we prepared 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, and 70 wt% content composites filled in epoxy matrix for two micro silica and three micro alumina types for use as a GIS heavy electric machine. As a filler type of epoxy composite, micro silica composites showed excellent AC breakdown strength properties compared to micro alumina composites in the case of electrical properties of micro silica and alumina. The electrical breakdown properties of micro silica composites increased with increasing filler content, whereas those of micro alumina decreased with increasing filler content. In the case of mechanical properties, the micro silica composite showed improved tensile strength and flexural strength compared with the micro alumina composite. In addition, mechanical properties such as tensile strength and flexural strength of micro silica and alumina composites decreased with increasing filler content. This is probably because O-H groups are present on the surface of silica in the case of micro silica but are not present on the surface of alumina in the case of micro alumina.

  • The demand for truck bus radial (TBR) tires with enhanced fuel efficiency and wear resistance have grown in recent years. In addition, as the issue of particulate matter and air pollution increases, efforts are being made to reduce the generation of particulate matter. In this study, the properties of epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) containing a silica-friendly functional group were evaluated by considering it as a base rubber and varying the silica ratio in this binary filler system. The results showed that the wear resistance of the NR/BR blend compound decreased as the silica ratio increased. In contrast, the ENR/BR blend compound exhibited an increase in wear resistance as the silica ratio was increased. In particular, the ENR-50/BR blend compound showed the best wear resistance due to the presence of several epoxide groups. Furthermore, we observed that for tan 𝛿 at 60℃, higher epoxide content resulted in the higher Tg of the rubber, indicating a higher tan 𝛿 at 60℃. On the other hand, it was confirmed that increasing the silica ratio decreased the value of tan 𝛿 at 60℃ in all compounds. In addition, we measured the amount of wear particulate matters generated from the compound wear. These measurements confirmed that in the binary filler system, regardless of the filler type, the quantity of the generated wear particulate matters as the filler-rubber interaction increased. In conclusion, the silica filled ENR/BR blend compound exhibited the lowest generation of wear particulate matters.

  • In this paper, thermo-mechanical and rheological properties of NCPs (Non-Conductive Pastes) depending on silica filler contents and diluent contents were investigated. And then, thermal cycling (T/C) reliability of flip chip assembly using selected NCPs was verified. As the silica filler content increased, thermo-mechanical properties of NCPs were changed. The higher the silica filler content was added, glass transition temperature ($T_g$) and storage modulus at room temperature became higher. While, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) decreased. On the other hand, rheological properties of NCPs were significantly affected by diluent content. As the diluent content increased, viscosity of NCP decreased and thixotropic index increased. However, the addition of diluent deteriorated thermo-mechanical properties such as modulus, CTE, and $T_g$. Based on these results, three candidates of NCPs with various silica filler and diluent contents were selected as adhesives for reliability test of flip chip assemblies. T/C reliability test was performed by measuring changes of NCP bump connection resistance. Results showed that flip chip assembly using NCP with lower CTE and higher modulus exhibited better T/C reliability behavior because of reduced shear strain in NCP adhesive layer.

  • Silica which is used for reinforcing filler in tire industry is widely known as eco-friendly material exerting $CO_2$ reduction effect through decrease of rolling resistance and improvement of wet grip. Generally silica is classified as a highly polar filler because it contains a large number of silanol (Si-OH) group on its surface. And also silica gives a lower reinforcing effect than carbon black due to its poorer rubber-filler interaction. Therefore silica is treated with silane coupling agent or activator, then following the conventional rubber blend method, vulcanized sheets were prepared using a hot press, and cure characteristics, mechanical properties and abrasion resistance of the test specimens were investigated. It was found that with an increase in the silane coupling agent content the tensile strength, 300% modulus and abrasion resistance increased while Mooney viscosity decreased and crosslink density slightly increased with an increase of activator.

  • The relative viscosity was measured at different filler loadings for a cycloaliphatic epoxy resin and hexahydro-4-methylphthalic anhydride hardener system filled with micro/nano hybrid silica. Various empirical models were fitted to the experimental data and a fitting parameter such as critical filler fractions (${\phi}_{max}$) was estimated. Among the models, the Zhang-Evans model gave the best fit to the viscosity data. For all the silica loadings used, ln (relative viscosity) varied linearly with filler loadings. Using the Zhang-Evans model and the linearity characteristics of the viscosity change, simple methods to predict the relative viscosity below ${\phi}_{max}$ are presented in this work. The predicted viscosity values from the two methods at hybrid silica fractions of $\phi$ = 0.086 and 0.1506 were confirmed for a micro:nano = 1:1 hybrid filler. As a result, the difference between measured and predicted values was less than 11%, indicating that the proposed predicting methods are in good agreement with the experiment.

  • The reinforcement of Inorganic filler silica treated with LBR-MDI In SBR vulcanizates were Investigated. The inorganic filler silica treated with MDI on unmodified surface and that of silica treated by MDI was retreated with LBR. The charateristics of vulcanization, physical properties, surface properites and dynamic properties were investigated after mixing those silica with SBR and unmodified silica with SBR. Rheometric studies of the vulcanization showed that S-series has fast scorch $time(t_{10})$ and an optimum cure $time(t_{90})$ in the SBR compounds. And it was turned out that SBR vulcanizates compounded with LBR treated silica was better than any other componnds in hardness, tensile strenght, 100 300% modula and elongation. We could confirm that urea bonding is formed from IR spectrum. We concluded that L-series shows the best reinforcement effect in SBR vulcanizates.

  • The use of ZnO and stearic acid is very well known in sulfenamide accelerated sulfur vulcanization of diene elastomers. Zn-ion coated nano filler has been developed and tested, in styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) as sulfur vulcanizing activator cum reinforcing filler. In this study Zinc oxide has been replaced by the Zn-ion coated nano silica filler with an aim to study the dual role of this nanofiller in SBR. The presence of Zn-ion on the nano silica filler surface activates the sulfur vulcanization by involving Zn++ in to the sulfurating complex formed with thiazole from sulfenamide. The increase of Zn-ion, on the nanofiller, decrease the scorch safety of the elastomer compound but increase the tensile strength, state of cure and tear strength and attain maximum at its 10% level. The presence of stearic acid increases the rate of vulcanization. Replacement of stearic acid with mono-stearate, however, increases the vulcanization rate but decrease the ultimate state of cure. A mechanistic scheme involving dual function of this nanofiller has been suggested.
