  • The flexible and superhydrophobic properties of silica aerogels are extremely important material for thermal insulation and oil spill cleanup applications for their long-term use. Flexible silica aerogels were synthesized by using a two-step sol-gel process with precursors, methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) followed by supercritical drying. Silica aerogels were prepared at different molar ratio of methanol to MTMS (M). It was observed that the silica aerogels prepared at M=28 were monolithic but inelastic in nature, however, for M=35, the obtained aerogels were monolithic, elastic in nature with less shrinkage. The microstructural studies were carried out using scanning electron microscopy and surface area measurements. The hydrophobicity was confirmed by Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy and water contact angle measurements. The detailed insight mechanism for flexible nature of silica aerogels and hydrophobic behavior were studied.

  • A silica aerogel sheet with a very low thermal conductivity is used to suppress the temperature increase of the Cu coil in an induction cooker by reducing the heat flow from the heat source (cooking pot). It is found that the temperature of the Cu coil is reduced significantly by the insertion of an insulation sheet between the heat source and the Cu coil, demonstrating the effectiveness of the insulation sheet in the suppression of the heat flow between the cooking pot and the coil. Furthermore, the temperature of the cooking pot increases more rapidly with the use of the insulation sheet, allowing for an increased efficiency of the induction cooker.

  • Silica Aerogels with the density and porosity of 0.1g/cm3 and 96% were synthesized by two different supercri-tical drying processes (i.e additional solvent and intial pressure methods) Isoptopanol was chosen as sol-gel and supercritical drying solvents in order to synthesize aerogels at the lower temperature and pressure because the critical values of isopropanol are lower than those of methanol and ethanol commonly used. The P-V-T relationship of isopropanol was experimentally described for optimizing supercritical drying conditions such as the amount of extra solvent and supercritical drying temperature and pressure. In the addional solvent method monolithic and transparent aerogels were obtained by supercritical drying at 25$0^{\circ}C$ and 900 psing after 40% of the reactor volume was filled with isopropanol. Crack-free aerogels were synthesized at 25$0^{\circ}C$ and 1100~1200 psig by the initial pressure method with an intial nitrogen gas pressure of 400 psig and the isopropanol amount of 5% of the reactor volume.

  • The multi-layer insulating curtains used in the experiment was produced in six combinations using non-woven fabric containing aerogel and compared and analyzed by measuring heat flux and heat perfusion rates due to weight, thickness and temperature changes. Using silica aerogel, which have recently been noted as new material insulation, this study tries to produce a new combination of multi-layer insulating curtains that can complement the shortcomings of the multi-layer insulating curtains currently in use and maintain and improve its warmth, and analyze the thermal properties. The heat flux means the amount of heat passing per unit time per unit area, and the higher the value, the more heat passing through the multi-layer insulating curtain, and it can be judged that the heat retention is low. The weight and thickness of multi-layer insulation curtains were found to be highly correlated with thermal insulation. In particular, insulation curtains combined with aerogel meltblown non-woven fabric had relatively higher thermal insulation than insulation curtains with the same number of insulation materials. However, the aerogel meltblown non-woven fabric is weak in light resistance and durability, and there is a problem that the production process and aerogel are scattering. In order to solve this problems, the combination of expanded aerogel non-woven fabric and hollow fiber non-woven fabric, which are relatively simple manufacturing processes and excellent warmth, are suitable for use in real farms.

  • Ambient drying sol-gel processing was used for monolithic silica ambigels in the temperature range of $130-250^{\circ}C$. A new method of mesopore ambigels, which mean the aerogels prepared by ambient pressure drying process synthesis, is suggested at first. This method includes two important approaches. The first point is that $SiO_{2}$ surface modification of wet gel was performed by trimethylchlorosilane in n-butanol solution. This procedure is provided the silica gel mesopore structure formation. The second point is a creation of the ternary azeotropic mixture water/n-butanol/octane as porous liquid, which is effectively provided removing of water such a low temperature by 2 step drying condition under ambient pressure. The silica aerogels, which were prepared by ambient pressure drying from azeotropic mixture of water/n-butanol/octane, are transparent, crack-free and mesoporous (pore size ${\sim}$ 5.6 nm) with surface area of ${\sim}$ $923{\;}m^2/g$, bulk density of $0.4{\;}g/cm^3$ and porosity of 85 %.

  • Glass wool is an eco-friendly materials that is manufactured through a continuous process by processing waste glass. This materials is low cost compared with another materials and has excellent thermal conductivity. For this reason, glass wool is installed as insulation system for LNG carriers and as insulation of building wall as well as various industries. The mechanism of insulation of glass wool is the conduction of the wool itself and convection by space between fibers. Therefore, in order to develop the enhanced thermal conductivity of glass wool is necessary to reduce its own conduction or to insert additional material after manufacturing as well as prevent convection. In this respect, many researchers have been actively studying to decrease thermal conductivity of polyurethane foam using by inserted glass wool or change the chemical component of glass wool. However, many research are aiming reduction of glass wool itself. This study focus on post-processing and inserted different materials; silica-aerogel, kevlar fiber 1mm, 6mm and glass bubble. Experimental results show that the thermal conductivity almost decreases with the addiction of glass bubble and silica aerogel.

  • Since Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is normally carried at 1.1 bar pressure and at -163℃, special Cargo Containment System (CCS) are used. As LNG carrier is becoming larger, typical LNG insulation systems adopt a method to increase the thickness of insulation panel to reduce sloshing load and Boil-off Rate (BOR). However, this will decrease LNG cargo volume and increase insulation material costs. In this paper, silica aerogel, glass bubble were synthesized in polyurethane foam to increase volumetric efficiency by improving mechanical and thermal performance of insulation. In order to increase dispersibility of particles, ultrasonic dispersion was used. Dynamic impact test, quasi-static compression test at room temperature (20℃) and cryogenic temperature (-163℃) was evaluated. To evaluate the thermal performance, the thermal conductivity at room temperature (20℃) was measured. As a result, specimens without ultrasonic dispersion have a little effect on strength under the compressive load, although they show high mechanical performance under the impact load. In contrast, specimens with ultrasonic dispersion have significantly increased impact strength and compressive strength. Recently, as the density of Polyurethane foam (PUF) has been increasing, these results can be a method for improving the mechanical and thermal performance of insulation panel.

  • The physical properties and microstructural changes with heat-treatment of opacified silica aerogels doped by TiO2 were investigated. Monolithic SiO2-TiO2 aerogels were prepared by supercritical drying (25$0^{\circ}C$, 1250 psig) of wet gel obtained by adding titanium isopropoxide to prehydrolyzed TEOS-isopropanol solutions. The density and the porosity of SiO2-10 mol% TiO2 aerogels were 0.23 g/㎤ and 90%, respectively. During supercritical drying, the linear shrinkage of aerogels increased with increase in the titanium content an TiO2 was transformed to the anatase phase as well as particls agglomerates led to TiO2 clusters of 100~800 nm dispersed homogeneoulsy in the silica matrix. The IR transmittance of opacified silica aerogels was very low in the region of wavelengths below 8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ compared with pure silica aerogels and SiO2-TiO2 aerogels showed the high thermal stability of microstructures up to $600^{\circ}C$.

  • The silica aerogels opacified via adding oxides were prepared by the sol-gel supercritical drying technique and their characteristics of mechanical strength and thermal conduction were investigated. The compressive strength of SiO2-10 mol% TiO2 and SiO2-10mol% Fe2O3 aerogels were 0.11 and 0.047 MP a respectively much higher than 0.025 MPa of pure silica aerogels. The thermal conductivity of silica aerogels opacified by TiO2 was as low as 0.02505 W/m${\cdot}$K at $400^{\circ}C$ It was found that the TiO2 -opacifier for improving mechanical strength and suppressing high temperature conduction of pure silica aerogels was more effective than the Fe2O3 -opacifier
