  • In this paper, we propose a self-optimization scheme for indoor femtocell coverage in heterogeneous networks. If the femtocell coverage is larger than indoor area, neighbor cell users passing by the outer area of the femtocell coverage may request an unnecessary handover which incurs wasteful signaling overhead. On the other hand, if the coverage is smaller than the indoor area, some of indoor users might not be connected to the indoor femtocell. Therefore, we propose the method by which the femtocell coverage attains the exact indoor area employing self-organized scheme. Autonomous self TX power adjustment of the femtocell is possible because the proposed method utilizes handover request events and membership information of users that can be obtained by the femtocell itself. We show that the TX power obtained by the proposed algorithm converges to the optimal TX power that can be obtained analytically to attain the indoor coverage area.

  • Network Mobility Basic Support protocol reduces location-update signaling by making network movements transparent to the mobile nodes (MNs) behind the mobile router (MR), but causes some problems such as sub-optimal routing and multiple encapsulations. This paper proposes an Route Optimization Employing HMIP Extension for Mobile Networks (ROHMIP) scheme for nested nubile networks support which introduces HMIP concept with relation information between MNNs behind a MR and the MR in order to localize handoff, to optimize routing and especially reduce handoff signal overhead. With ROHMIP, a mobile network node (MNN) behind a MR performs route optimization with a correspondent node (CN) as the MR sends a binding update message (BU) to mobility anchor point (MAP) via root-MR on behalf of all active MNNs when the mobile network moves. This paper describes the new mechanisms and provides simulation results which indicate that our proposal reduces transmission delay, handoff latency and signaling overhead.

  • With increasing use of a personal mobile computer. the Mobile IPv6 is one of the main protocols that support mobility and complies with IPv6 specification. Similar to the mobile IPv6, the mobile IPv6 also has limitations on fast moving condition. The Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 is a solution that overcomes these limitations. The Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 is a micro mobility protocol that supports fast mobile IP handover and reduces signaling overhead with Mobility Anchor Point(MAP). But until now no paging method is applied to the Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 to reduce unnecessary signaling overhead and power consumption of mobile nodes. So, the paging mechanism for the Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 is proposed in this paper. the mechanism is implemented by making use of the destination option header and extension function and the last location algorithm. The results show that the Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 with the paging ability reduces the traffic of mobile networks by removing unnecessary binding update packet generated whenever handover takes place. Also, the larger the paging size is. the less the number of BU(Binding Update) massage generated.

  • Resource Reservation Protocol(RSVP) can provide Quality-of-Service(QoS) guarantees for real-time services in wired networks. However, RSVP suffers from mobility problem in the mobile Internet. Therefore, to provide seamless QoS services, it is needed that a mobile node makes a reservation everywhere it visits. Recently, many protocols have been proposed to provide QoS guarantees through advance resource reservation. But, these proposals have problems with a waste of bandwidth and the signaling overhead due to advance resource reservation. In this paper, we propose new advance resevation protocol, Proportional Aggregate RSVP(PA-RSVP) to minimize the resource reservation bandwidth and the signaling overhead in the mobile Intemet while providing QoS guarantees. Based on the performance evaluation, we show that the proposed protocol provides an improved performance over existing protocols under various system conditions.

  • Recently, Vehicular Networks is being developed to provide variety of services such as email, ftp, and video streaming services. As IP mobility technology, Proxy Mobile IP is developed to provide these services for a VANET user. By adopting Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6), Vehicular Networks can support IP mobility, but it may cause a proxy binding update (PBU) message when a vehicle moves from one MAG to another. In addition, if the density of vehicles on the road is high, significant PBU messages are generated. In this paper, we propose bulk PBU message to reduce signaling overhead by those PBU messages when a bunch of vehicles move from one MAG to another. When the vehicles move from one MAG to another, it generates only one bulk PBU message to update those vehicle's location. Through numerical and simulation results, we show that our proposed bulk registration reduces signaling overhead when the density of vehicles and the speed of them are high.

  • To implement high-order multiuser multiple input and multiple output (MU-MIMO) for massive MIMO systems, there must be a feedback scheme that can warrant its performance with a limited signaling overhead. The interference-to-noise ratio can be a basis for a novel form of Codebook (CB)-based MU-MIMO feedback scheme. The objective of this paper is to verify such a scheme's performance under a practical system configuration with a 3D channel model in various radio environments. We evaluate the performance of various CB-based feedback schemes with different types of overhead reduction approaches, providing an experimental ground with which to optimize a CB-based MU-MIMO feedback scheme while identifying the design constraints for a massive MIMO system.

  • The existing route re-establishment methods which intend to extend the lifetime of the network attempt to find new routes in order not to overly consume energy of certain nodes. These methods outperform other routing algorithms in the network lifetime extension aspect because they try to consume energy evenly for the entire network. However, these algorithms involve heavy signaling overheads because they find new routes based on the flooding method and route re-acquisition occurs often. Because of the overhead they often can not achieve the level of performance they intend to. In this paper, we propose a new route re-acquisition algorithm ARROW which takes into account the cost involved in the packet transmission and the route re-acquisition. Since the proposed algorithm considers future route re-acquisition costs when it first finds the route, it spends less energy to transmit given amount of data while evenly consuming the energy as much as possible. Using 2-dimensional Markov Chain model, we compare the performance of the proposed algorithm and that of other algorithms. Analysis results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing route re-acquisition methods in the signaling overhead and network lifetime aspects.

  • Proxy Mobile IPv6(PMIPv6) is a network-based mobility management protocol and it does not require mobile node's involving in mobility management. In PMIPv6, the Mobile Access Gateway (MAG) incurs a high signaling cost to update the location of a mobile node to the remote Local Mobility Anchor (LMA) if it moves frequently. It may cause excessive signaling traffic and increase a high traffic load on LMA. Therefore, we propose a new mobility management scheme in proxy mobile IPv6 networks with dynamic paging support. To minimize signaling overhead, in our proposal, the size of the paging area is determined dynamically according the changes of mobility and traffic patterns of the mobile node. An analytic model is applied to determine the optimal size of the paging area. The cost analysis using fluid flow model presented in this paper shows that our proposal can achieve performance superior that of PMIPv6 scheme.

  • Proxy mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) protocol is a network-based mobility management protocol to support mobility for IPv6 nodes without host involvement. In PMIPv6, the Mobile Access Gateway (MAG) incurs a high signaling cost to update the location of a mobile node to the remote Local Mobility Anchor (LMA) if it moves frequently. This increases network overhead on the LMA, wastes network resources, and lengthens the delay time. Therefore, we propose a new mobility management scheme for minimizing signaling cost using the pointer forwarding. Our proposal can reduce signaling costs by registration with the neighbor MAG instead of the remote LMA using the pointer forwarding. The cost analysis using imbedded Markov chain presented in this paper shows that our proposal can achieve performance superior that of PMIPv6 scheme.

  • In mobile communication, there are various types of handoff for the support of all forms of mobility. Proxy mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) enables local network-based mobility management of a mobile node without any effect of mobility-related signaling. Recently, PMIPv6 has been considered for supporting mobility management in LTE/SAE-based mobile networks. To support seamless mobility in heterogeneous mobile networks, the overall cost of handoffs needs to be minimized and the procedure should be guaranteed to be secure. However, the reduction of the authentication cost has not been fully investigated to provide seamless connectivity when mobile users perform a handoff between the PMIPv6 domains. This paper proposes secure pre-authentication schemes, completing an authentication procedure before performing a handoff, for a fast handoff in PMIPv6. Analytic models have been used for measuring the authentication latency and for the overhead cost analysis. In addition to providing fast authentication, the proposed pre-authentication schemes can prevent threats such as replay attacks and key exposure.
