Received signal strength indicator (RSSI) represents the strength of the received signal at the front end of analog-to-digital convertor (ADC) input. RSSI value can be used for deciding the status of channel at the receiver. In this paper, the usage of RSSI in handover is studied using the practical measurement data. We first measure RSSI in 5.9GHz frequency band which is commonly used in wireless access in vehicular environments (WAVE) system. i.e., vehicular communications. Then, to implement a fast handover, the usability of RSSI data is analyzed based on the measured data. We also apply handover in practical highway environments.

We propose a seamless IPTV transport technology of mobile device. This technology uses multiple interfaces of wireless communication on mobile device. This proposal for transportation of mobile IPTV contents is more mobile and adaptable than other wireless technologies that are currently being used. Algorithm of proposed technology is as follow. When the signal strength of the connected wireless network interface of mobile device is getting lower than specified level, another wireless network interface is connected to continue downloading the IPTV contents in advance. Another connection is maintained until the signal strength of the first connected interface is stable or the interface is connected to another base station (or AP) that have good signal strength. For more seamless services, we consider classifying the packets of mobile IPTV and using dynamic content quality select techniques. Dynamic content quality selection is based on notifying transfer rate to the content delivery network (CDN) server. The proposed technology is expected to use efficiently with both mobile IPTV and the transportation of mobile P2P/P4P.

This paper proposed indoor location recognition method based on RSSI(received signal strength indication) using the LVQ network. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, we performed experiments, and then compared to the conventional triangularity measurement method. In the experiments, we set up the system to the laboratory, divided the 40 section, and installed 6 nodes as a reference node. We obtained the log-normal path loss model of wireless channels, RSSI converted into the distance. The distance values used as the input of LVQ. To learn the LVQ network, we set the target values as section indices. In the experiments, we determined the optimal number of subclass, and confirmed that the success rate of training phase was 96%, test phase was 91%.

Surveillance reconnaissance sensor network is used for surveillance in wartime and area of operation. In this paper, we propose a target localization method using the detection signal strength of seismic sensors. Relay equipment calculates the target location using coordinate information and detection signal strength of the seismic sensors. Target localization error deviation due to environmental factors was minimized by subtracting the dynamic offset when calculating the target location. Field test shows improvement of target localization through reduction of errors. The average error was decreased to 3.62m. Up to 62% improved result was obtained compared to weighted centroid localization method.
A typical AP (Access Point) selection policy is to select an AP based on the received signal strength indicator (RSSI), ignoring its load. If multiple stations are deployed densely at a particular area, a typical AP selection policy will bring about the overall network throughput degradation. This paper proposes a novel AP selection policy taking into consideration not only signal strength of the APs but also AP loads to avoid Hotspot congestion. An experiment on Alinker implementing proposed AP selection policy, demonstrates that the proposed policy achieves close to optimal load balancing and grants the maximum transmission rate to stations in comparison with SSF (Strongest-Signal-First) and LLF (Least-Loaded-First).
The target strength (TS) is calculated from the measured signal using the definition of the peak TS (PTS) or the integrated TS (ITS). These two types of TS sometimes give different results depending on what the pulse duration is. In this paper, we model the scattered time signal by the numerical code based on the physical diffraction theory and examine the effect of the pulse duration on the value of PTS or ITS. The transformed TS (TTS) for the frequency domain is used as a reference solution.

The objective of this study is to estimate RF signal strength over sea and land surfaces. For this work we calculated scattering by land with DEM(Digital Elevation Model) and sea surface with RMS surface height. and we selected two area inland and sea shore as RX point. And for each area, we get VV-pol and HH-pol characteristic of scattering at 2.2GHz.

In the communication channel, the received signal is affected by many factors that can cause errors. These effects mean that received signal strength (RSS) based methods incur more errors in measuring distance and consequently result in low precision in the location detection process. As one of the approaches to overcome these problems, we propose using direction calibration to improve the performance of the RSS-based method for distance measurement, and sequentially a weighted least squares (WLS) method using reliability factors in conjunction with a conventional RSS weighting matrix is proposed to solve an over-determined localization process. The proposed scheme focuses on the features of the RSS method to improve the performance, and these effects are proved by the simulation results.
The auto-encoder network which is a good candidate to handle the modeling of the signal strength attenuation is designed for denoising and compensating the distortion of the received data. It provides a non-linear mapping function by iteratively learning the encoder and the decoder. The encoder is the non-linear mapping function, and the decoder demands accurate data reconstruction from the representation generated by the encoder. In addition, the adaptive network width which supports the automatic generation of new hidden nodes and pruning of inconsequential nodes is also implemented in the proposed algorithm for increasing the efficiency of the algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed method can improve the neural network training surface to achieve the highest possible accuracy of the signal modeling compared with the conventional modeling method.

In this paper, the system for monitoring process of aluminum laser welding was developed using the light signal emitted from the plasma which comes from interaction between material and laser. Photodiode for monitoring system was selected based on the spectrum analysis of light from plasma and keyhole. Behavior of plasma and keyhole was analyzed through the sensor signals. Value of sensor signal represented the light intensity and fluctuation of signal indicated the stability of plasma and keyhole. For the relation between welding condition and sensor signals, the input power and weld geometry greatly effected on the average of each sensor signals. Using the feature values of signals, estimation model for tensile strength of weld was formulated with neural network algorithm. Performance of this model was verified through coefficient of determination and average error rate.
